Closing Soon - The 2026 State of Network Automation Survey
by Chris Grundemann 15 Oct '26

15 Oct '26

Hello NANOG! It is that time of year again, for the fourth year in a row -- it's the last chance for everyone who operates a network to participate in the State of Network Automation survey. Survey closes next Friday (16 October). -- *TL;DR: If you operate a production network, please take the 2026 State of Network Automation survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/StateOfNetworkAutomation2026 <https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/StateOfNetworkAutomation2026>* -- More info: This survey focuses on tracking industry trends and adoption patterns over time. There is no automation experience required to take the survey. We want to know if the network you work on has 0 automation just as much as we want to know if it has a bunch. We do want respondents (or their tools) to have enable/edit/write access to a production network. This is a survey for network operators. If you do not currently operate a network, you can help by sharing the survey with friends/family/colleagues who do! For consistency, almost all of the questions are exactly the same as last year -- this allows accurate trend tracking. You can view results from last year's survey here (as presented at NANOG 95): - Slides: https://storage.googleapis.com/site-media-prod/meetings/NANOG95/5509/202510… - Video: https://youtu.be/kYBRG0UdC_Y The results of this year's survey will also be presented and shared for free to the global network operations community. All responses are anonymous, and only aggregate data will be published. Thank you! ~Chris PS - Please feel free to share the survey wherever network operators gather. Let's beat last year's record participation numbers and make the data better for all!

Vendor websites after purchase..
by Bryan Fields 15 Oct '26

15 Oct '26

I know this is a mighty tall ask, but could companies that are bought out keep redirects working beyond the "We're a new name!" page? Every search result for something on Junipers old site kindly redirects me to the new HPE networking webpage rather than the actual indexed site. This is not a uniquely juniper, er, HPE issue. They all do this; this is just my current pain. Is it time to bring the clue-bat out of retirement? -- Bryan Fields 727-409-1194 - Voice http://bryanfields.net

Hi It is a long time ago but didn't IBM buy them. I remember going to their office to discuss connecting their company to the IBM internal network. I was working at IBM in San Jose and handling several IBM acquisitions. Roy

semi-OT: the Whistle InterJet
by Royce Williams 13 Oct '26

13 Oct '26

Since there is a deep bench of ISP history here ... Putting out a call for Whistle InterJet bits / knowledge / hardware / ephemera / memories. (These were SOHO gateway projects from the late 90s, resold by ISPs in US / EU / Asia.) I've revived my preservation project and am trying to preserve whatever I can -- even just memories / stories are welcome, especially if you worked at an operator that carried InterJets. Please contact me off list. https://www.alaska.net/~royce/interjet/ Royce

bgpmap.net - free multi-vantage BGP looking glass
by Matin Baloochestani 11 Oct '26

11 Oct '26

Hi all, Wanted to share a small side project: bgpmap.net, a free BGP looking glass with a visual AS-path map. Data comes from RIPE RIS via RIPEstat, shown from multiple vantage points in one view. No signup, free to use. Honest disclaimer: this is my first website and a learning project, so keep expectations modest. Not trying to replace bgp.tools or anything close to it. I built it because I wanted a cleaner way to compare AS paths across vantage points. If anyone has a minute to try it, I'd appreciate feedback on anything that looks wrong in the data, features you'd actually use, or rough edges in the UI. Thanks, Matin https://bgpmap.net

How long AS-PATH policies have you used
by Saku Ytti 09 Oct '26

09 Oct '26

We've had problems in various NOS in generating large prefix-lists. In absolute configuration size, as well as prefix-set sizes. I'd like to hear about operational experiences, how long AS-PATH policies people have successfully run and in which NOS. I am not interested in exact AS_PATH contents, I am only interested that it contains a named set of AS numbers, in any order and any repetition. In Junos speak ^[1 42 500 1212]*$ How many ASN can I iterate, before I become market leading and have to work with vendors to fix bugs? The interest is because of RPKI we could get rid of prefix-lists, but we might still want to verify AS_PATH. Consider AS-YTTI having AS43792. a) They advertise google with invalid origin b) They advertise google with valid origin Maybe these come from some BGP optimization tool they run. A) is dropped by RPKI, B) is passed. But B) can be dropped by prefix-list filter or AS-PATH filter which doesn't allow Google ASN to exist in the AS_PATH. So I don't really need to check the prefix again, after it passed RPKI. AS_PATH check is equally strong. -- ++ytti
