How long AS-PATH policies have you used
by Saku Ytti 09 Oct '26

09 Oct '26

We've had problems in various NOS in generating large prefix-lists. In absolute configuration size, as well as prefix-set sizes. I'd like to hear about operational experiences, how long AS-PATH policies people have successfully run and in which NOS. I am not interested in exact AS_PATH contents, I am only interested that it contains a named set of AS numbers, in any order and any repetition. In Junos speak ^[1 42 500 1212]*$ How many ASN can I iterate, before I become market leading and have to work with vendors to fix bugs? The interest is because of RPKI we could get rid of prefix-lists, but we might still want to verify AS_PATH. Consider AS-YTTI having AS43792. a) They advertise google with invalid origin b) They advertise google with valid origin Maybe these come from some BGP optimization tool they run. A) is dropped by RPKI, B) is passed. But B) can be dropped by prefix-list filter or AS-PATH filter which doesn't allow Google ASN to exist in the AS_PATH. So I don't really need to check the prefix again, after it passed RPKI. AS_PATH check is equally strong. -- ++ytti

BGP Stuck Routes Operational Experience Survey
by ixygkou3＠gatech.edu 25 Jun '26

25 Jun '26

Dear NANOG community members, We are researchers from Georgia Tech investigating the phenomenon of BGP stuck routes (also known as "zombie routes")—prefixes that persist in routing tables despite being withdrawn by their origin AS. While recent research using BGP beacons (including our work presented at IMC 2025 [1]) confirms that zombie routes occur regularly and can persist for long periods, there is a gap in understanding the operational reality of this issue. We observe the data, but we need to hear from operators to understand the real-world impact and their mitigation responses. We invite you to participate in a brief, anonymous survey to help us assess the extent and impact of this phenomenon in operational settings and to identify common practices for mitigating it. Survey Link: https://forms.office.com/r/9BuWqN0n0J Privacy & Data Usage: This survey is anonymous. We are not collecting any PII (Personally Identifiable Information) data. Thank you for your time and for your contributions to this Internet measurement study. [1] I. Xygkou, A. Chariton, X. Dimitropoulos, and A. Dainotti. "A First Look into Long-lived BGP Zombies". Server boxes/packing request
by Tom Storey 25 Jun '26

25 Jun '26

Hi all, would anyone in the Los Angeles area happen to have recently taken a delivery of, or will be taking an imminent delivery of, Dell PowerEdge 740xd servers and have their boxes and foam inserts available that you'd like to get rid of? We're looking to ship about 14 of these and need boxes and foam inserts to pack them up. Thanks

IPv4 flag day
by Saku Ytti 24 Jun '26

24 Jun '26

'ello, I've babbled about this before, but apparently I'm babbling about it again. Does anyone feel responsibility for the dual stack mess we've created? It wasn't here when we found the Internet, and we're going to leave it here after we leave, does not really jive with the whole leave campground cleaner than found it ethos. I don't see any future where organically IPv4 dies in such a way that people offering services on the Internet are comfortable offering them IPv6 only, the long tail will be too expensive to ignore. Dual stack adds complexity, cost, reduces quality and security. It is also blatantly an antitrust issue, as established players with access to large allocations can outcompete new entrants with no IPv4 allocation. In practice I'm thinking about something where relevant players all sign an agreement to drop ipv4 at their edge in e..g 15 or 20 years. Creating clear business justification for people to implement IPv6 in their next upgrade cycle. Today if I'm an edge with the IPv4 addresses I need, I wouldn't consider IPv6, because that's just a cost to me, with no upside. I know I could get some transit shops to sign off on such an agreement, but no one cares about transit, this obviously doesn't work without Amazon and Facebook et.al. Sure edges still can have IPv4, but that's like edge having IPX or AppleTalk, it'll be highly local issue, no one expects to reach anywhere with it, and anticipates to translate 100% of external traffic. Amazon? Facebook? Google? Microsoft? Any appetite? -- ++ytti

OARC 47 Call for Contribution
by Willem Toorop 23 Jun '26

23 Jun '26

This workshop will be a hybrid event. Date - 09-10 November 2026 Location - Vancouver, British Columbia Times - approximately 10:00-17:00 PDT (Local time PDT is UTC -7; note that British Columbia has opted to remain on PDT all year round) Deadline for Submissions - 2026-08-24 23:59 UTC https://indico.dns-oarc.net/event/58/abstracts/ All DNS-related subjects and discussion topics are welcome although we're particularly keen to hear more about operational and security related experiences, best practices and practical advice; both for newcomers to the DNS arena and those who have been around for longer who want to learn more about new features and opportunities to improve resilience, security and privacy. (These topics we think will complement the usual high-quality data-based research submissions we always hope to receive!) If you have something interesting to share with the community that lies outside of the focus above, please don't be put off - if it's good, we'll be happy to include it. You can also contact us directly at submissions(a)dns-oarc.net if you would like to ask about the suitability of a potential presentation submission topic. If you'd like to offer a talk, but are not quite sure what to pick, here's a non-exhaustive list of ideas: 1. Operations & Deployment * Configuration management, deployment processes, and interoperability experiences. * Tools, tips, and making effective use of DNS software features. 2. Performance, Resilience & Scaling * Provisioning, load-balancing, and planning for resilience. * DNS performance management, efficiency improvements, and metrics. * Monitoring infrastructure: log pipelines, analytics, and anomaly detection. 3. Security, Privacy & Policy * DoS attacks, DNS abuse, DNSSEC signing and validation. * Privacy considerations, for example: encrypted transport, qname minimization, data anonymization. * Relevant global and regional policies, legislation, and compliance. 4. Research & Innovation * Data-driven testing, measurement, and analysis. * New protocols, protocol extensions, and next-generation namespace management. 5. Lessons & Learnings * Outage experiences, recovery stories, and cautionary tales For further details please see https://www.dns-oarc.net/oarc47 Willem Toorop, for the DNS-OARC Programme Committee

LAG/ECMP and 'exact-route'
by Saku Ytti 23 Jun '26

23 Jun '26

Hey-o, Which platform/software has a command to show which interface will be used for forwarding with given keys? ASR9k has a cef exec-route, and I see references to this in c-nsp, reddit and cisco.com forums, stressing how useful debugging tool it has been. Despite it not actually working, since it's just RE software, it doesn't talk to the EZchip/lightspeed, unless it has been fixed in the past couple of years, certainly hasn't worked in the timeline of various forums finding it useful. MX has 'jsim' https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/day-one-books/TW_MX3D_PacketWal… which I think actually works, but it is quite involved. I have some (false?) memory that I saw in some release note this being a bit more productised into CLI command, but I'm failing to find anything to support this memory. There is also RFC5837, which is actually implemented in QFX5k, but not for TTL exceeded, we've opened ER to get it supported on MX and PTX and for TTL exceeded. This RFC will allow programmatic platform agnostic discovery of the actual interface used, without relying on platform specific magic. So please do ask your vendors to implement it. -- ++ytti

On Thu, Jun 18, 2026 at 9:20 AM <sronan(a)ronan-online.com> wrote: > Honestly, if SMBs are the only ones staying on IPv4 with a /28 each, I’m > fine with that :) > Yup! But that's why the subject line of this thread is met with "never gonna happen" -- because there's a *lot* of SMBs that are better off staying on IPv4 with their /28 and a pair of upstream NAT devices. And that's a *big* economic splash zone of collateral damage you'd be causing, even just doing a "let's turn off IPv4 for a day". So, hopefully people now understand why IPv4 isn't going away, and we can stop talking about a flag day or "shut it down for a day". Nobody wants to cause that level of economic harm for zero benefit. Thanks! Matt (still have my tee-shirt from helping with the first world IPv6 day; but pragmatic enough to understand and explain why IPv4 is never going away)
