L3 Issues

Hello and Good Morning, Are there reports of L3 having issues this morning ? Starting at about 10:10 A Pacific, I started seeing huge drops in traffic at various sites, including San Diego, Houston, San Antonio, Charlotte, NC, Philadelphia, etc. Anyone seeing a similar behavior ?

Seeing a big drop in outbound traffic on our L3 link starting about that time (we're a web host). Getting calls about sites down too; all the traces I've walked customers through so far have died on L3 networks. DNS DoS ???

my DNS servers were getting slow so I blocked recursive queries for all but my own network. Then I was getting so many of these: ns2 named[5056]: client 78.159.111.190#25345: query (cache) 'isc.org/ANY/IN' denied that is was still slowing things down. I've since written a script to watch the log and throw these into the box local firewall. If I expire the entries after 24 hours then I accumulate about 10200 unique IPs. If I expire after 48 hours, then it's just over 20000 unique IPs. Is anyone else seeing this? Elliot

The last tech probably doesn't want to be bothered...that's a management issue. A PortMaster 3 may solve your problems. I looked at 3Com Total Control about 15 years ago but know nothing about it. We employed US Robotics rack-mount chassis paired with Xyplex terminal servers. That was replaced with the Livingston PortMaster 3 (later bought by Lucent). Each PortMaster 3 connects to two T1 lines and a 10BaseT Ethernet, supporting 48 users. Use RADIUS authentication and you're all set. You can probably pick up some of those for a hundred dollars. You will need to learn about T1 phone lines and RADIUS. I'm looking for any documentation, firmware updates and some help figuring out which NAC goes with which NIC. Internet Blip in San Diego at 1pm?

Several of my customers in San Diego noticed large drops in traffic at 1pm today. Note it was not a total loss in connectivity. someone from verisign? website down over ipv6

Dear someone from Verisign, It looks from over here (and some other hosts I checked) that http://www.verisigninc.com/ is dead when using a host having iPv6 dual-stack. Some packets do come over, so the browser is not failing over into IPv4. Also the whois server for whois.nic.name is not working for IPv6 dual-stack hosts. The IPv6 part of the whois server claims that he is dead and so again failover to IPv4 is not going to happen. Contact me off-list if necessary. regards, Igor Ybema
