Yanzheng, Thank you for this clarification. This is the missing piece I've been trying to find. So, to restate what you're saying, the 3,948 bogon routes were real (AS202734 did import them into its BGP table), but they were only leaked to HE's collector(s) and not propagated to the global DFZ. This explains the discrepancy between HE and RIPE RIS data perfectly. This also answers Charlie's question about "propagation" — it wasn't global, but it was targeted (at route collectors). I have a few follow-up questions, purely for my own technical understanding: 1. How common is it for an ASN to use a route collector session (like HE's) for "internal routing experiments" without proper outbound filters? Is this considered a best practice, or a known risk? 2. Does the fact that the leaked prefixes included specific, sensitive Chinese carrier space (e.g., China Telecom's 125.104.0.0/13) change anything about how this "experiment" should be viewed? 3. How can the community (or HE) prevent similar "collector-only leaks" from being used to generate misleading bogon alerts in the future? To directly answer your requests: UTC timestamps & affected prefixes: Hijack window: 2026-05-16 to 2026-05-17 UTC. The attacker's own BIRD config shows manual injection of China Telecom's IPv6 backbone (240e::/20) on May 1 (premeditation). Full list of the 3,948 hijacked IPv4 prefixes is from Hurricane Electric's BGP data, timestamped on May 16-17. Traceroutes/MTRs: From my network (victim) to the attacker's infrastructure: as20473--nrt6.global.tianshome.net (log available in the archive). From attacker's Shanghai Looking Glass to my home IP: direct trace available in the archive. Any British Telecom Contacts?

Hi Folks, Sorry to spam everyone, but are there any contacts for BT NOC (or other tech contacts) on here that could reach out to me off list, please? I've had an ongoing problem for months where traffic traveling from the US to the UK via Lumen / Colt is being dropped by BT. I've tried working with Lumen, they tell me since it's in the UK I need to talk to Colt. Colt tells me that since it originates in the US, I need to talk to Lumen. Hoping BT can help since the traffic being dropped is destined for their network. -Matt

Hi. I was working on a route server configuration for BIRD and while it's commonplace and often publicly documented [1, 2] that a route server checks that the origin AS number is in the as-set, then I didn't find a single route server documentation which states that the entire AS-path is checked. Same is true for software [3] used for building the route servers configuration. Or 8 - 10 us per prefix if the AS path contains 10 AS numbers and the as-set file contains 1k AS numbers. I tested using the clock_gettime() in BIRD version 3.2.1. In summary, I simply wanted to share this idea. Perhaps such stricter checking is applicable for small and regional exchanges. However, it requires that both route servers use BIRD, as to my knowledge, OpenBGPD or any NOS like Junos does not support checking each AS path element against some dataset. Also, wider adoption of ASPA on route servers would prevent such route leaks. Does SOA expire for root matters?

Hello everyone Was wondering if anyone who has worked across root servers ops could answer about the expire value in SOA record: dig @a.root-servers.net. . soa +short a.root-servers.net. nstld.verisign-grs.com. 2026050800 1800 900 604800 86400 So 604800 (1 week) would actually make the DNS replicas to stop resolving if disconnected for an extended period of over a week from their master? Unsure of tech root operators use to replicate zone (if other than traditional zone transfers) but many of auth DNS providers these days use database backend and thus in their case primary is DB primary, secondaries are DB replicas but from DNS software point of view all are just the masters and expire value is just ignored.
