I filed an abuse report 11 days ago (Feb 9) and have received no response. Attempts to follow up by phone using the contact info in ARIN's records have yielded: - one phone number that's an overall campus directory - one phone number that's a generic outbound line - one phone number that offers an option to connect to "the on-call person", however, no such person has ever been available (on repeated attempts during business hours) and the recorded message directs callers to an "escalation procedure" without stating exactly where that procedure can be found ---rsk

*Subject:* Advocating for Open Source and Compileable Code in Hardware and Software Development *Dear NANOG Community,* As we navigate an era of rapid technological advancement, collaboration and openness in hardware and software development are more critical than ever. It has come to our attention that personnel from Huawei, Futurewei, and ZTE may be subscribed to this list or, at the very least, following the archives. This message serves as a call to action for all stakeholders, urging them to prioritize open-source principles and ensure that source code is not merely released as patch files but in a fully *compileable* and accessible form. *The Importance of Open Source and Compileable Code* The future will arrive swiftly, but the only way to get there is *together*. *Development is the only path forward*, and a truly interconnected world cannot be built on closed ecosystems that limit innovation and transparency. Open-source software and hardware do not mean that profitability is impossible—on the contrary, history has shown that the best solutions win in the long run. Companies such as *Red Hat*, *Raspberry Pi*, and others have successfully built sustainable business models while embracing openness. Dear NANOG members, Hoping that some members working at Google/YouTube might be part of this group, I respectfully suggest adding or noting the following to YouTube's bandwidth requirements page [1]: * *8K (H.264):* 110 Mbps * *8K (H.265):* 60 Mbps [1] https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/78358?hl=en *References and Standards:* * *ITU-T H.265 (HEVC) Standard:* High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) significantly reduces bit rate requirements compared to H.264 while maintaining the same video quality. (Source <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Video_Coding>) * *Bitrate Requirements for 8K Video:* o A study on *8K 120Hz HEVC/H.265 encoding* indicates that the required bit rate ranges from *85–110 Mbps*. (Source <https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/apsipa-transactions-on-signal-and-i…>) o *H.264 encoding* generally requires higher bit rates for high resolutions, and an estimated bit rate for 8K content is around *110 Mbps*. o *H.265 (HEVC) encoding* allows for more efficient compression, reducing the required bitrate for *8K content to approximately 60 Mbps* while maintaining similar video quality. *Conclusion:* To improve the accuracy of YouTube's bandwidth requirement documentation, I propose updating the page with recommended bitrates for *8K (H.264) and 8K (H.265) video formats*. NANOG Community, During the evening on Friday February 28, 2025 between 8 pm to 12 am EST (Saturday March 1, 0100 to 0500 UTC), NANOG will perform an upgrade of the mailman software and migration of archives. During this time, all mailing lists will be unavailable, including the ability to make changes to your subscription options. We expect this migration to be completed in three hours time or backed out. Detailed notes: NANOG will be migrating to mailman 3 during this time. All lists at < mailman.nanog.org> will be migrated to <lists.nanog.org>. All users will be migrated transparently, and optionally can create an account on lists.nanog.org to manage their subscription. The nanog(a)nanog.org and other @nanog.org list posting addresses will remain as an alias, but we request that you use [listname](a)lists.nanog.org to post after the migration. The RFC 2919 and 2369 List-ID headers will change, so any filters members use may need to be updated on their systems. The archives will be imported, but the existing static archive will be maintained for historical link purposes. For testing purposes we have a list ‘test’ < https://lists.nanog.org/mailman3/lists/test.lists.nanog.org/> configured the same as the NANOG list. Arista filesystem rewinding back 3 years

Hello, It must be my lucky day. I've run into quite a strange situation where what shows up in flash: isn't the same as what is actually in /mnt/flash on an Arista switch. I found out that this was an issue when I reloaded the switch and the filesystem looks like it rewound itself to 2022 in Aboot. I'm guessing that the SSD stopped taking writes sometime in 2022 and EOS never found out about it. Anyway, if anyone has any information on this feel free to send it to me offlist. I don't want to create a spamwave or anything. Thanks and have a nice day. -Drew

ICANN verification

The company I work for owns a domain that was registered by an employee that no longer works for us and we have been unable to track them down. 48 hours ago the website at the domain was replaced by an ICANN verification message. It offers two solutions - neither is possible at the moment: 1) resend a verification email - but we already tried that and monitored the mailbox for the old employee but nothing ever came so we think he might have registered it with a personal account. 2) access the portal of the registrar but since don't have credentials and we already tried the reset password link hoping again that if we monitored his old corporate email account we'd see something appear but again nothing :-( At this point we aren't sure what to do - the site is down and ICANN needs validation of who the site owners are. Does anyone have any ideas or can give us some direction? Kind Regards, Marco Belmonte
