I'm looking for a contact at Frontier that can discuss dark fiber. My current account exec says they don't offer it, yet prior conversations with him and a previous SE revealed that they very much did (just didn't have availability on the paths I wanted at the time). Their web site highlights it fairly proudly. I'm aware that availability varies. Google's statement that the Gmail service is "free" for its users is inaccurate. As Google admits against interest, Gmail users are subjected to advertisements and also may subscribe to the service. Moreover, data transmission and storage costs are significant. Political electronic bulk mail is distinguishable from physical bulk mail. Electronic mail is receiver pays (via advertisements or subscription). Physical mail is sender pays (via stamps or permits). Therefore, this is not without cost to the recipient. Google reports an immense profit. It is undesirable and unseemly to pay (via advertisements or subscription) and then receive more bulk advertisements. Support a requirement that all political and other bulk senders be "opt-in". Support that that for every bulk message: The requestor must meet reputational thresholds and ensure that their messages are secure, filterable, and follow best practices for the user experience, including for example: (i) “one-click” unsubscribe, which enables a user to efficiently opt out of future communications; (ii) approving and following unsubscribe requests within 24 hours, which respects the user’s choice; and (iii) ensuring that all links in the message can be scanned by Google for phishing and malware detection, which helps to protect the user from harmful content. At our residence, the US mailbox is positioned near the recycling bin. Bulk mail generally goes directly into recycling without being viewed. Sadly, receiver has to pay for recycling (via taxes). Likewise, we expect unsolicited electronic bulk mail to go directly to recycling (the spam folder is automatically deleted, recycling storage). Tool for virtual networks

Dear colleagues, I've been developing a tool for building and experimenting with virtual networks, primarily for use with teaching network protocols. It's an active work-in-progress, but I thought it might be time to reach out to NANOG in case anyone else might find it useful and/or might have feedback to offer. Here is the code: https://github.com/cdeccio/cougarnet It includes layer-2 switches, VLANs and trunking, and routers, all using Linux processes in their own namespaces as network "nodes". It was inspired by mininet (https://mininet.org) but it was developed from scratch to meet different needs. The README has additional information. If you install and run the code, *please* do it in a *virtual machine*. At this point, it requires superuser capabilities to run things like "ip link", "ip addr", and "sysctl", among other things, using sudo. Much on the to-do list, but it meets my immediate needs. Scanning the Internet for Vulnerabilities

I would like to solicit the opinions of network operators on the practice of scanning all of, or large chunks of the internet for known vulnerabilities. In earlier times, this was generally viewed as being distinctly anti-social behavior, but perhaps attitudes have changed relative to earlier eras. I would thus like to know how people feel about it now, in 2022. Regards, rfg P.S. I cannot however say that I am unaware of any parties that may currently be involved in such activities.

4 gbit capable bufferbloat flent test target close to/traversing MegaIX in sydney?

I am curious if there is anyone out there willing to run a server with irtt and netperf on it that I could do some bufferbloat testing against (in off peak hours)? I've been getting some severely bloated (250ms!) results on the 27ms path I'm on now at rates slightly above 1.2gbit....
