When I used to work in the old Genuity NOC we used to have a camera up so people could see us on the web 24/7. The machine the camera was hooked up to would freeze on the last picture taken when the hard drive would fill. He thought I was leaving the room; I was actually standing off where they couldn't see me, but I could still see the screen in case real errors popped up. :-) After that, he started calling us and warning us before the curtain would be opened.

Several folks have asked me how to build a NOC for their operations people. Instead I thought I would post a few pointers to some of the larger oeprations centers with public information. A moderately well-known lurker has asked me to post this into the discussion: NOC crew are 'utility' personnel, like power control guys; in a natural emergency you might get stuck with two shifts of people in the building; this requires a) that you have a place to put them, and b) that you have policies that take care, in advance, of those employees' personal needs (family evac, boarding up, etc). These guys are expensive; if you want their full attention during the hurricane, you better make sure you have $8 an hour flunkies out helping their wife. Oh yeah; emergency sustenance supplies in the NOC, too.
