Att is hard to deal with I ran into a situation not long ago where I needed to get a t1 cross connect from one cage to another within a building. They consider floor 3 a CO and floor 7 a different CO. both floors share the same wiring frame room like on the 5th floor. Well they wouldn't allow me to order a cross connect between the 2 floors without having actual cage space on the specific floor even tho they are in the same wiring frame room. On top of that if I wanted to be on the other floor I would have to come in via the outside entrance and do meet point fibers out in the st. btw this is on the telco side what a nightmare... -carlos -----Original Message----- From: Alex H. Hi All, My name is Todd Braning, I work on the technical side of the BandCon house. I am afraid Paul's email is inaccurate. Here are a few facts: BandCon offers transport services that can be configured as unprotected or protected. If you buy an unprotected circuit, and the underlying transport has issues, your VC will have issues. However that is not the case if you purchase a protected service. BandCon does not "just slap all your locations into one big VLAN and let unknown unicast flooding and MAC learning sort it out". All circuits are provisioned as separate point to point MPLS VCs. We do, in fact, utilize traffic engineering and do not oversubscribe our wavelengths. Regarding our NOC. It is true that in the past, our NOC was sub par. This is no longer the case. About a year ago we replaced all NOC technicians, brought in an experienced NOC manager and have made significant progress. Paul - I cannot find you in our customer database so I am not sure what services you bought from BandCon. We've run our circuits pretty hot and not noticed anything that would indicate a lack of shaping/policing. And while the flame war with the attrition guys was pretty funny (I'm a sucker for classics) I wouldn't really use that as any type of barometer of ... well anything really. Simple, they're oversubscribing their transport circuits and letting users fight for bandwidth. Basically what they're doing is buying a 10GE unprotected wavelength from a carrier, dropping a switch on the ends, and loading up multiple customer VLANs onto the circuit. There are no bandwidth controls, no reservations, no traffic engineering, nothing to keep and the circuit uncongested, and these are unprotected waves so they go down on a regular basis whenever their carrier does a maintenance. How they implement multi-point service is even scarier, they just slap all your locations into one big VLAN and let unknown unicast flooding and MAC learning sort it out. Most serious customers run screaming, I'm sure you can find some former customers who can describe the horror in more detail off-list. When things break, their support is nothing to write home about. They often brag that they have a former Level3 engineer on payroll, unfortunately he's nowhere to be found, and their suport people aren't terribly sharp on those rare occasoions when they *do* answer the phone or respond to e-mail. Like someone else pointed out, multi-day outages aren't at all uncommon, so if you end up going with Bandcon, make sure you have sufficient redundancy in place. Since they can't really compete on quality, they compete instead on price. Their sales force spams and cold-calls every website, ARIN, peeringdb, etc on a regular basis, and can't take "no" for an answer. We're looking at getting connectivity via Level 3 in a particular datacenter, but we're being told that it's "legacy Wiltel/Looking Glass" rather than "true" Level 3. Given that both of these acquisitions occurred years ago should I be worried, or is this "legacy" connectivity the same as L3 at any other datacenter? Scott.

Does anyone have any data on how the memorial event for Michael Jackson effected the global backbones? This was seen as another inaugural type of traffic day to most of the people I've talked to. -S

Drop in IPv6 traffic

Hi, I've seen a big drop in IPv6 traffic volume on our Freenet6 IPv6 service last night and it seems to be the same on AMS-IX. Has anyone else seen the same? Any idea why? Thanks, Mikael

OT: Bringing Cisco equipment to US

Hello Nanog, sorry for the OT post but am frustrated to look for the information in the CBP website and i even called their number but got nothing for almost 8 minutes, just a recording. i'll be bringing in 2 cisco switches to one wilshire in LA to install those switches there. since these are small switches, 3750's, i'll be carrying them on the check-in luggage. I would like to get some information if i could be in trouble in any way with regards to Customs there in the US, i'll be coming from the Philippines by the way. insights, off list would be greatly appreciated. tnx!
