Call for Presentations - AusNOG-03 --------------------------------- AusNOG-03 is to be held in Sydney, Australia between 31st August and 1st of September 2009 The AusNOG meeting provides the Australian community with a forum to exchange information and experiences on a number of issues relating to the operation and support of networks, with a specific focus on the coming 6-12 months. The conference is expected to have a strong technical representation from companies operating networks in Australia. Details of AusNOG-03 and past meetings can be found on the AusNOG web site at www.ausnog.net. Submissions ------------ Please read the information below carefully. Send your proposed topics and details to organisers(a)ausnog.net. Please include a detailed overview including the expected length and technical depth of your presentation. The program committee will confirm your application and may get back to you with any questions. Please remember this is a technical event for network operators and presentations should be representative of this. Marketing presentations or presentations focusing on specific products are not suitable for this event. Some areas of current interest to the target audience are listed below. These are simply suggested topic areas and the committee will happily consider proposals for papers covering any facet of network technology, network operation, or the industry. 1. NBN Technology. High speed access, core, edge, border... Access speeds measured at 100M will present all sort of challenges across the provider sphere. As so much is yet unknown how the NBN will land on us, will there be the ability to specify the edge device or policy. Either way talks on experience in this space is what we are seeking. 2. Backhaul. Increasing end user speeds in an NBN world will see a requirement for increased backhaul. How do you implement a multi hundred gigabit backhaul network ? What are the issues for wholesale play with this type of undertaking ? 3. Content to the Edge. Whilst we are about to enter the work of real competition in international access and bandwidth is about as inexpensive as it has ever been we are still a small population very far away from the main Internet trade routes. Experience with CDN, distributed content applications and how operators leverage servers, DNS, load balancers etc to bring about an outcome. 4. Operational Best Practices. Tools, methodologies and techniques that can improve the reliability and efficiency of IP Networks. Configuration management, configuration automation, routing registries, performance monitoring and availability monitoring are always of interest to operators. 5. Regulatory, Market Data and Overseas Trends (Regulatory and Industry Bodies Updates, Market Data and Statistics, Trends from Overseas Markets) Panel Discussions ----------------- - Required Panellists: 8-10 - Panel Length: 45 mins - Number of Panels: 2 Panels are the interactive part of the conference. The job of Panellists will be to stimulate and moderate the discussion. Whether you are on the panel or in the audience your input would be appreciated. The two Panel Topics will be related to the industry at the time of the conference. Propose a topic that you think will be interesting, or if you think you are interesting, propose yourself for inclusion to the panel :-) Keynote Addresses ----------------- - Required Speakers: 2 - Presentation Length: 45 mins - Number of Topics: 2 We are seeking 2 speakers for Keynotes Addresses. Each Keynote will be of 45 mins in length, including time for input from the industry. If you would like to be considered for a Keynote topic, please email organisers(a)ausnog.net with details of yourself and your topic. GoDaddy issues this morning?

Anyone know what was the deal with GoDaddy this morning? I sporadically could not resolve a domain I own this morning. Checked the authoritative and it was fine... then noticed that it was completely not working from some ISPs but OK from others, etc. Went to GoDaddy's site and finally saw a small notice on their support page saying they were having issues with Verizon customers on the east coast. Well, I'm in Illinois and I certainly don't consider this the east coast, however some people I know on a Verizon DSL account could not resolve any of the domains I had registered on GoDaddy. Also, results from a L3 DIA were sporadic as well. I really didn't have much time to look at it this morning and now the notice is gone from their site so I assume it's fixed...? Anyone shed some light on this? Registrar issues are so rare IMHO, Verizon routing issues on the other hand, I'm not really sure about as I live in AT&T/Comcast country. -Sean

But does it matter? People presumably use Ethernet because it is inexpensive, easily available, well known, etc. Yes, if the underlying technology is SDH *or* DWDM with an SDH type interface, I know *I* would prefer to use the SDH interface - because it gives me the SDH OAM we all know and love. But if my router vendor charges me a 10-30% premium for using cards with an SDH interface, then Ethernet is going to win every time... There are vendors that supply cards where the optics can be reconfigured for 10Gig Ethernet LAN *or* WAN (SDH) interface, and where you don't have to pay a premium. Seeking people who experienced BGP policy violations

Hi, I would like to trigger feedback from you (people running BGP) on http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-francois-limited-scope-specifics-00 This draft documents a threat to the respect of BGP policies of an AS. These can be violated due to the injection of more specific routes whose propagation is limited by misbehavior/mis-configurations of *other* ASes. That is, your peer screw up, and you perform transit for free to him as a result. I'd like to receive information about operational experiences of this issue from people who know they already experienced such violations, either by being the victim or being the unfortunate attacker. Info would be : How did you detect the violation ? How did you / your peers reacted ? Did you take actions to avoid the problem in the future ? Up to know, I've only found people who've been the attacker by mistake. I'd like to hear the victims ! ARIN and DNSSEC

Hi ARIN is now signing the /8 zones that it is authoritative for (eg 192.in-addr.arpa, etc). This the phase two of a three-phase process. Given that in-addr.arpa is not yet signed, we have published a list of trust anchors that you can download to configure on your local recursive resolvers. Is your ISP blocking outgoing port 25?

It has been long heard that many ISPs block outgoing port 25 for the purpose of reducing spam originated from their network. I wonder which ISPs are still doing so. I know comcast has been doing that but they cancelled it after many complaints. It seems to be the same case for Verizon. AT&T is the major one that I know of that is still enforcing this policy. But they said they can unblock port 25 upon request. I am not sure how easy it is. One simple way to test if your ISP is blocking outgoing port 25 is to try: "telnet mx2.hotmail.com 25" or "telnet gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25". If the connection fails, it could be due to the fact your ISP is blocking outgoing port 25, although it can also be other reasons such as local firewall configuration. Can someone perform the test and let me know result if possible? Thanks a lot! Regards. -Zhiyun

FYI There is a fire at 151 Front Street in Toronto, which is home to TorIX as well as a variety of other network providers. Rumor is the fire may have ORIGINated in the Peer1 suite. Seems a bad weekend for fires given what happened in Seattle as well. Drive Slow
