U.S. Secret Service shuts down NYC cellular disruption network

The U.S. Secret Service announced today that it dismantled a network of electronic devices located throughout the New York tristate area that were used to conduct multiple telecommunications-related threats directed towards senior U.S. government officials, which represented an imminent threat to the agency’s protective operations. The SS say they discovered more than 300 co-located SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards across multiple sites, and while the photo they provide shows gear set up in what looks like an apartment, it could be that interlopers have infiltrated actual Internet colo facilities. As a colo operator, I’ve turned away more than a few sketchy potential customers due to their flakey stories requesting rooftop or window antenna locations. Hey all! It's that time of year again... Survey time. The 2025 State of Network Automation Survey is open!!! No automation experience required - please share with everyone who has edit access on a production network, regardless of how automated that network might be. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/StateOfNetworkAutomation_2025 For consistency, and ability to track trends, most of the questions are word-for-word repeats from prior years surveys. This year I deleted a few questions that don't seem relevant anymore, and I made a few questions optional, rather than required, in hopes of MANY more responses -- I also built in some logic, so that *folks who have ZERO network automation experience / deployment can still answer the survey easily*, in hopes of more accurate data collection. There are also some new questions, all suggested by the Network Automation Forum community. Finally, you will notice that we (now with NAF backing) moved off of the free Google form to a much sleeker SurveyMonkey survey. w00t Again - we invite anyone and everyone with enable on a production network to complete the survey, and we hope that everyone here will share the survey in other foraa as well - mailing lists, newsletters, social media, discord, slack, reddit, etc, etc. Survey results have been submitted as a talk for NANOG 95 in October. Hawaiian Telecom contact

Hi all, If there is anyone from Hawaiian Telecom here that could ping me off-list about a service issue I’ve been fighting for a week now and am getting no where slowly I’d greatly appreciate it. Or if anyone has a good technical contact there who might not be on the list and wouldn’t mind reaching out to see if they would be willing to contact me that would also be deluxe. Here is a quick accounting of what has been going on in case anyone else it rings a bell for anyone and/or anyone else is experiencing it: I observed multiple Fioptics services across Oahu bounce multiple times last week overnight Monday into Tuesday. First thing Tuesday morning I started getting complaints of some user’s internet service not working. I tracked it down to users being NAT’ing out one of the “secondary” public/static IP addresses. If I moved one of those secondary addresses to another physical device with a unique MAC address then the IP worked fine from there. The HTEL Tier 1 call center had little more to offer other than power cycling the ONT, which of course didn’t fix it. They also mentioned it was not possible to have multiple public IP addresses bound to the same MAC address and had no response when I asked how it was we’d been operating like this for over 2 years? So they escalated to tier 2 who was supposed to get back to me but never did, so I had to call back in and request Tier 1 get me to Tier 2 again and they told me someone would call me back and it would take 2 hours. 4 hours later, Tier 2 finally calls back and says they cleared the ARP table on their side and I should try again, but also kept repeating the party line that a many to 1 IP to MAC configuration is not possible. I requested another escalation and was told there is none and my only recourse now was to have them dispatch a tech. So the tech came today and from what I’m told from the onsite folks they sent an installer who spent 2 hours on a chat with “the NOC” which is also not on island anymore they said. They offered no resolution and no escalation and told us we’d have to call back in to update the ticket to say that we’d tried his troubleshooting. Thanks, Todd

Comcast off-list contact for hierarchy screw-up?

Sorry for the noise, but I'm hoping someone a bit higher up at Comcast can help with billing administrivia as the techs I'm talking to have been useless. I have a ton of cable connections that are about to get axed due to bureaucracy. The short story in bullet points: * Large client owned ~35 offices went bankrupt, individual offices were sold off ~6 months ago * Change of Ownership files for all the accounts, thought everything was good * One account down this morning, after hours on the phone found out it's apparently still attached to the bankrupt hierarchy * Customers have been getting $0 due bills thinking it was on auto-pay * After getting the down office restored, got messages in my inbox to return equipment for other offices * Called in, gave tons of account numbers to an annoyed rep who said she would remove all the accounts from the hierarchy and bills would go to each individual office, but that most of them were "disconnected" already * Eh? All offices are online right now and I can connect to them. * "Sometimes it can take a few days for the accounts to get shutdown" * But I don't want them to shutdown... * Rep creates tickets for each one to fix things, tickets get automatically closed ~30 minutes later because the accounts are out-of-contract and the service plans are no longer available * Literal text: "I am writing to you today because we received the ticket regarding the account ending in (0000). After researching the account, we were unable to restart the account due to the package speed is expired.. You will need to have a current speed tier applied and that will need to go through our sales team at 1-800-391-300" * You're missing a digit in the phone number in your automated email * Accounts are still "disconnected" but online. * Customers don't want new contracts Thanks, -A

Call for operator feedback on AS-to-org mapping tool (ASINT).

Hi NANOG, Our team at Virginia Tech has been building *ASINT <https://asint.netsecurelab.org/>*, a research tool that maps ASNs to their operating organizations by combining Internet-routing metadata (WHOIS, PeeringDB, corp websites, M&A records, etc.) with large-language-model analysis. It is conceptually similar to CAIDA's AS2ORG, but with broader coverage. A use case is reducing false positives in BGP hijack detection by identifying when different origin ASNs actually belong to the same organization. *Please try it:* 1. AS search for AS 18733 (Microsoft and acquired ASNs): https://asint.netsecurelab.org/as-search/18733 2. Organization search for Deloitte (across multiple RIRs): https://asint.netsecurelab.org/org-search?q=deloitte *Why this might help:* Systems like Cloudflare Radar flag anomalies when the origin ASN does not match ROAs. Many of these are not hijacks but legitimate internal re-announcements between sibling ASNs. In our dataset of 17,282 such alerts (Jan 2023–Jul 2024), ASINT identified 1,621 cases (~9.4%) as likely intra-org. We sampled 100 of these and contacted operators; all 32 who replied confirmed they were internal, not hijacks. *What we need from you:* 1. Please check your org and ASNs. If you see a correct mapping, click the thumbs-up. If you see an error or a missing ASN, click the thumbs-down. After that, a short comment box appears. Any details you can share are valuable: correct legal entity name, subsidiaries, brand vs legal names, recent M&A, reseller or DDoS-scrubbing scenarios, multi-tenant NOCs, government or university structures, region-specific business units, joint ventures, or anything else that explains why two ASNs should or should not be grouped. 2. Expect errors. We know there are two classes: - False positives: we group ASNs under the same organization even though they are different. - Misses: we fail to group sibling ASNs that should be together. *If you spot either, please rate and leave a comment. We will feed your comments into the next LLM pipeline cycle to correct mappings and tune extraction rules.* 3. Any feedback is welcome: data sources we should incorporate, edge cases that keep biting you, risk of over-merges vs under-merges, UI issues, or better ways to present evidence.
