If possible, put a network tap in-between the router and the ONT, and sniff the traffic. I've seen this recently where in a very specific circumstance (two hardware vendors, and only with CGNAT IPs), one side stopped responding to ARP requests. The tap capture showed the request going out, but the far end never processed it. Running a capture on the far end device wouldn't show the received ARP request - it just vanished somewhere between the wire and the pcap. This is a bit tongue-in-cheek but my appreciation to those who architectured our internet is earnest. And my question -- is GPT-4 a real almost-AGI? -- Is also in earnest. I feel like there really is something there. my prompt to GPT-4: Please compose an email to the nanog mailing list showing appreciation for TCP. Style it as if you're a 40-something-year old who has used linux since they were a teenager, and is pretty smart but really is in awe of the people who came before. Picking a RIR/obtaining an AS/ressurrecting a legacy space

I have an old friend still holding onto some legacy IP space that he has not used in 30 years. The origin goes back to the early 90s, and originally through ARIN. In the relevant databases it is a /23, but actually a /22 - but the top 2 addresses are not registered or announced anywhere I can find. I do not mind losing those to the pool but getting the /23 up and running would help... and a /22 far more useful for our purposes. Sadly I also have a lovely 16 bit BGP AS number AS5768 still unused from my first company of that era but in the hands of a admin that has been unresponsive about either using it or giving it back for many years. Sentimentally I would like to find a way to get that back... but it is ok if that doesn't happen. Anyway, LibreQos would really like to obtain a BGP AS number from some RIR (or is there an unused BGP AS transfer market?) and have some real IPv4 addresses to vector some traffic through, in our testbeds initially, and perhaps later on as means to shape traffic for other services. Most of our market is outside the USA actually and I would be inclined to get that AS from the simplest AR to deal with, but my list of preferences is merely based on where we have installations rather than cost/contacts/customer service... and especially, "hassle". Honestly coping with figuring out the fee and registration schedules are is just beyond me. I have heard ripe was easiest to deal with regarding legacy space. (?) Anyone out there that can help sort out this legacy space in a sane manner? We are subsisting on a tiny amount of donations/month presently, and the up front cost and yearly costs are quite a lot to make this step. Finding someone(s) to help us become real in this fashion, navigating the RIRs process, setting up bird or FRR for us (with a touch of anycast), would help, and help (at some price) moving forward, would be great. LACNOG 2023 - Call for Presentations LACNOG, the Latin American and Caribbean Network Operators Group, will hold its LACNOG 2023 conference together with the LACNIC 40 event from 2 to 6 October 2023. This meeting will be held in hybrid format in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil. The LACNOG 2023 Program Committee invites the Internet community to submit their presentation proposals for the event. In line with the spirit of LACNOG, presentations should address topics geared towards regional Internet development. The following is a non-exhaustive list of some of the topics of interest for the LACNOG 2023 meeting: ●Network operation and professional experiences, success stories ●Internet of Things ●MANRS ●Community networks ●IPv6 integration and deployment ●Experiences involving botnets, malware, spam, viruses, denial of service attacks, and exploit techniques ●IP network architecture, sizing, configuration, and administration ●Routing and switching protocols, including unicast, multicast, anycast, SDN, etc. ●End-user applications (e.g., e-mail, HTTP, DNS, NFVs, etc.) ●Value-added services, such as VPNs, distributed systems, cloud computing, etc. ●Peering, Internet traffic exchange, IXPs ●Network data security and management, attack mitigation ●Network monitoring, performance, measurements, and telemetry ●Network automation, evolution, and convergence ●Infrastructure and physical transport, including optical and wireless networks ●Legislation, regulations, and Internet governance issues ●Research and education ●Technical topics related with universal acceptance Possible presentation formats include: ●Lightning talk: brief, 10-minute presentation ●Presentation: 20-minute presentation.
