Hello, I am interested in getting involved with an open source project in my spare time. I thought that it may be useful to contribute to an open source project that uses flow data to check for lateral movement inside of networks and also to check for known bads in remote connections. This seems like really low hanging fruit from a defense scenario. I've tried googling around for something like this and I have come up short. Is anyone aware of any such projects? Thanks, -Drew

Frontier Dark Fiber

My current account exec says they don't offer it, yet prior conversations with him and a previous SE revealed that they very much did (just didn't have availability on the paths I wanted at the time). Their web site highlights it fairly proudly. I'm aware that availability varies. Locating Cambium's Chinese plastics supplier

Greetings NANOG, a rare request here, I apologize that it is distanced from the usual network routing/design/administration areas of focus... posted on AFMUG too but NANOG seems to have many more people knowledgeable in the upstream manufacturing of devices. If there's anywhere else where there is a concentration of such knowledge please let me know. I'm looking to purchase a large number of Cambium's e501s (outdoor WI-FI AP) mounting brackets, which they don't sell individually (reasonable enough due to low demand). A while ago on one of our packages from (passed through) Cambium, I noticed the name of a Chinese supplier that I didn't recognize. I visited their website and they seemed to be Cambium's plastics supplier, among other wireless and Wi-Fi I products. But I didn't consider that information worth saving. Has anyone noticed that name so that I can attempt to buy a number of brackets directly, if they are allowed to sell them? Reasoning: I'm trying to put together a "super-fast event Wi-Fi re-deployment" design. Basically, at the many locations where we offer Wi-Fi once or twice a year, we'd have existing e501S slide-on mounts, also terminated RJ45 ends with the cable glands in a tough plastic bag ziptied to the tower. All events would have the routers/PoE switches left onside with a standardized IP/VLAN/etc setup. The idea is that we can tell the techs "grab 15 event APs", which don't need to be programmed by the office as they have a standard config, and after climb the techs spend <1min per AP to slide on and plug in. So with these and other optimizations, an event of e.g. 5 sites x 3 APs per site can be fully re-deployed in 1-2hours, instead of the 1-2 days that we normally spend organizing, programming, attaching mounts, cabling, etc.

cogent - Sales practices

So we just got an email from cogent, we have told them time and time again to stop calling and stop emailing. We tell them are good on bandwidth and we don’t need any of their services.. They then sent us a e-mail stating that they saw us coming though one of their customers networks from us, and figured we would want to buy direct instead of going though one of their customers. Yes COGENT stated this; well at least one of their sales reps. Sounds underhanded, shady, and unethical to me. Just figured I would post about it; see if I am making a mountain out of a mole hill 😊 Here is the e-mail: "Hey (redacted) , Maybe there is a misunderstanding. (ISP’s name removed) is a cogent customer who we provide upstream to. Hello, I'm Matthew Nance-Hall (Matt), a PhD Candidate at the University of Oregon working with Prof. Ram Durairajan (UO), Prof. Paul Barford (UW-Madison) and Prof. Klaus-Tycho Foerster (TU Dortmund). I was hoping someone could shed operator perspective on a research question we're exploring. We're interested in the timescales and mechanisms used to adjust data paths and wondering where gaps might exist between traffic engineering (TE), fast fail-over, and routing. We're specifically curious about spatio-temporal characteristics where gaps might exist. For example, the topological scope of an event (congestion or outage) and the timescale for adjustments to be made. I'm aware there are operator tools such as fast fail-over and TE for making changes confined to single links or across the whole network but wonder if there is a place for events that have broader scope (beyond a single link but less than the whole network) where new inquiry and exploration would be welcome.
