There was a lively thread on NANOG about the FCC and FAA conflict over G5 spectrum and altimeters when it all came to a head early this year. ProPublica published an investigative report on it last week, https://www.propublica.org/article/fcc-faa-5g-planes-trump-biden Whaddya know. Plenty of blame to go around. Government regulative bodies captured by the industries they’re supposed to regulate. The usual stuff.

10th anniversary of Wireless Emergency Alerts

June 7, 2022 is the 10th anniversary of Wireless Emergency Alerts in the United States. About 30 countries now use the mobile alert protocol (with country specific names). WEA is that thing which makes your phone buzz loudly and vibrate when there is an emergency message in your area. Wildfires, tornadoes, tsunamis, amber alerts, evacuations, etc. One upcoming change, the US is changing the name "Presidential Alert" to "National Alert". This will help tourists and mobile phones in other countries with Prime Ministers. In the US, the National Alert has only been used for tests. Its more common to get Amber Alerts and Imminent Threat Alerts. Another change, for some reason which Apple hasn't explained, Apple is changing how you can opt-in to local test messages. I assume its because carriers got too many complaints from customers which turned on test emergency alerts accident. Test Alerts are disabled by default. Previously, users could enable test emergency alerts with a keypad code. Now Apple requires downloadeding a special Test Alerts profile every year. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202743 Again, normal users do not need Test Emergency Alerts. These are intended for testing by local authorities. I have no idea why Apple is making the change. Android phones are unchanged. Amazon Alexa devices can enable severe weather alerts. Say, “Alexa, tell me when there’s a severe weather alert.” Or change it in the Alexa App under Settings >Notifications >Severe Weather Alerts.

U.S. Government Accountability Office Broadband: National Strategy Needed to Guide Federal Efforts to Reduce Digital Divide GAO-22-104611 Published: May 31, 2022. Publicly Released: May 31, 2022. https://www.gao.gov/products/gao-22-104611 In its efforts to expand broadband access, the federal government has subsidized investment in rural areas that haven't attracted private investment. We identified over 100 federal programs—administered by 15 agencies—that could be used to expand access. However, the number of programs has led to a fragmented, overlapping patchwork of funding. We recommended synchronizing federal efforts with a national broadband strategy, and more. [...] Recommendations GAO is making three recommendations, including (1) that NTIA identify key statutory limitations to program alignment and develop legislative proposals as appropriate, and (2) that the Executive Office of the President develop and implement a national broadband strategy. NTIA agreed with our recommendations. The Executive Office of the President did not take a position on our recommendation.

Hello all, I'm tracking down an VPN issue for a user whose path to us crosses a Zayo router ( ae14.cs3.ord2.us.zip.zayo.com ) which is showing a crazy amount of packet loss in the 90% range. Feel free to contact me off-list if your associated with Google Fi. I’m trying to narrow down some IP abuse that I believe is coming from Google Fi mobile devices. The IPs are all coming up as generic Google LLC in whois, and they dont have any reverse DNS. Hi, We have published a revision of our IETF Internet-Draft "IPv6 Addressing Considerations". It is available at: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-gont-v6ops-ipv6-addressing-cons… It discusses a lot of practical considerations of IPv6 addressing, so we'd love to hear from you if there's any that we missed or that we got wrong. Abstract IPv6 addresses can differ in a number of properties, such as scope, stability, and intended usage type. This document analyzes the impact of these properties on aspects such as security, privacy, interoperability, and network operations, with the goal of providing guidance about IPv6 address usage. Additionally, it identifies challenges and gaps that currently prevent systems and applications from leveraging the increased flexibility and availability of IPv6 addresses. Thanks!
