His intellect, wit, and generosity of spirit were well-known to those who were privileged to have the opportunity to work with and learn from him. Don?s contributions to the industry were manifold. While we are all diminished by his loss, his legacy abides; and we can honor him by continuing to build upon that foundation, for the betterment of the Internet community as a whole. Hi all, perhaps someone on this list interested in taking over binfiles.net? From time-to-time we all run a wget with some binfiles to test our peering-partners or transit uplinks. A central place to select some binfiles matching those networks would be a nice feature, somewhat similar to what traceroute.org does collecting Looking Glass servers. Long time ago I started with a small set of links to some local binfiles, but never found the time and energy to transform it into a full world-wide project. Please respond off-list if you have a cool idea and willing to take over the domain ownership and active development (put it all on github pages for example, and process requests). Greets, Michiel

Participate in COVID-19 Paper for BITAG? [NANOG]

I thought this may be of interest to some of the network operators here on the NANOG list. I am reaching out to solicit interest in participating in the development of a new technical paper from the Broadband Internet Technical Advisory Group (BITAG). In September we will begin work on a short paper that summarizes & memorializes the different sorts of things various players across the Internet ecosystem did in order to react to the unprecedented increase in Internet usage as a result of COVID-19. In the NANOG context, this would be the general sorts of things that access networks, IXPs, transit networks, enterprise networks, etc. undertook to adapt to the huge change stemming from COVID-19. In most cases this is not doing new work but merely referring to already published information, as the goal is to provide a broad survey of actions across the entire Internet ecosystem in order to explain and document the broad arc of the story. Your organization does NOT need to be a member/sponsor of BITAG to participate. As we anticipate the paper being relatively short, the time commitment will be at most 2 hours per week if not significantly less than that (a weekly call plus any text contribution/review). Don Smith, RIP.

It is with a heavy heart that I must relate the news that Don Smith, formerly of CenturyLink and more lately of Netscout Arbor, passed away in his sleep last night. Don was a colleague, friend, and mentor to many; he was a mainstay of the operational community, and tirelessly worked to make the Internet safer and more resilient for us all. His intellect, wit, and generosity of spirit were well-known to those who were privileged to have the opportunity to work with and learn from him. Don’s contributions to the industry were manifold. While we are all diminished by his loss, his legacy abides; and we can honor him by continuing to build upon that foundation, for the betterment of the Internet community as a whole. Clever use of a decommissioned Datacenter

I’ve got a fiber rich datacenter that was decommissioned adjacent to One Wilshire. Pipe to coresite and equinix and other fiber as well. The datacenter shuttered due to changing market conditions It wasn’t ready to adapt to. Anyway, wondering if you have any cool ideas on how to raise it up again from scratch. I was thinking renting the whole place out to someone or open to other ideas. Maybe something other than colo? Norman Jester 619-319-7055

Thanks again for this Roland. We have lost one of the giants of the Internet security community. So much of what he did was behind the scenes and without fanfare. From his exceedingly thorough testing of vendor gear to his contributions in the standards community to his ongoing efforts to thwart Internet badness and for me personally his assistance in helping develop various solutions. He was an important and exceptionally helpful partner when we were first developing and rolling out UTRS at Team Cymru. He will be missed. John

Disney+ contacts or geolocation ideas

I’m looking for a technical contact at Disney regarding geo-location. I have a client (apartment building) with a /24 (one IP per apartment). We recently upgraded out Internet connection to give a much-needed speed boost. Same connectivity provider, same IP addresses, just a bigger pipe. Since then, a while bunch of people have been unable to get to Disney+, while some can. Those that fail have existing D+ subscriptions, and get “error code 73”, which allegedly relates to location and rights management. The bandwidth provider has checked DNS, reverse DNS and contacted Disney, to no avail. WhoIS shows it as being in Toronto, Canada. Meanwhile, there is a lynch mob forming, and a scaffold being built in the parking lot :-). Any pointers on how to find someone at Disney with clue, who will be able to tickle their geolocation databane. The really irritating part is that everything worked until we had the bandwidth upgrade.
