Hi, I have a hobby project running DNS service to people looking for NTP public servers. I noticed that the DNS servers apparently get ~5 thousand queries per day from IPs that the GeoIP database we use claim are in in Antarctica. It’s less than 0.0001% of the overall DNS queries, but it made me curious what it’d take to make the service work better there. I imagine the internet service is fragmented between the various stations with each being best connected to a particular country? Does anyone have contacts there that I could talk to? I imagine (some of?) the stations would have a local NTP service as part of their compute facilities. Ask

DDoS Mitigation Survey

Dear NANOG members, I am a senior Ph.D. student at the University of Oregon (UO). We are seeking your help to understand DDoS mitigation techniques toward volumetric link flooding attacks. With our preliminary survey so far, DDoS mitigation approaches in the real world include 1) DDoS mitigation service providers (e.g., Akamai, Cloudflare), 2) Remotely-Triggered Black Hole (RTBH), 3) BGP FlowSpec, and 4) direct contact with upstream providers for traffic filtering. We also realize the traffic filtering space in hardware routers is limited as router vendors use CAM/TCAM to implement packet matching and access control lists at line rate. We believe that many routers on the Internet today may not have the necessary capacity to perform fine-grained traffic filtering, especially when facing a large-scale DDoS attack with or without IP spoofing. To this end, we ask that you kindly participate in our short and anonymized survey at https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_03aPeCIGiyUt6st. The purpose of this survey is to understand 1) the frequency and scale of DDoS attacks, 2) the DDoS mitigation methods commonly used by the edge network operators, and 3) the capability of the mitigation methods. Looking for topology mapping validation

Hi NANOG, Our teams at Sorbonne Université and Naval Postgraduate School have developed a new Internet topology mapping tool, Diamond-Miner. Diamond-Miner[3] combines Paris Traceroute Multipath Detection Algorithm[1] and high probing rate Yarrp[2] techniques to trace the load balanced paths at Internet Scale. We are seeking now some validation of our inferences, in particular the traceroutes links that we have found. I don't have a login to cisco to find out what this is and I'm having trouble finding anything about it in search engines that doesn't require a login to cisco. I guess they only want certain folks to know about it... :( Does anyone know anything about this and can explain it to me? De-bogonising 2a10::/12

Dear colleagues, We have now started de-bogonising 2a10::/12! As part of this, we are announcing a couple of prefixes out of 2a10::/12 from AS12654 (RIPE's Routing Information Service, RIS). Pingable targets have been configured in these prefixes, and we invite network operators to test for themselves whether this address space is reachable. The simplest way to do this would be to perform a ping6 to 2a10:4::1 . Using RIPE Atlas and RIS, we will also be carrying out our own tests in order to investigate connectivity and filtering for this address space. We plan to share our results with the RIPE community via RIPE Labs within the next few days. GPS may be jammed for several hours per day in the SE US Jan 16-24

I thought this might be relevant to many: GPS reception may be unavailable or unreliable over a large portion of the southeastern states and the Caribbean during offshore military exercises scheduled between January 16 and 24. The FAA has posted a flight advisory for the exercises that will require jamming of GPS signals for periods of several hours each day of the event. IPv6 Prefix Delegation to customers.

Hey Nanog, I am in the process of building out a FTTH proof of concept, and I would really like to offer each of my customers a /48 of IPv6. I've been able to announce my /32 to my upstreams, dual-stack all of my internal infrastructure no-problem, build v6 recursive name servers, etc. This was fairly straight-forward. Where I am struggling is the Prefix Delegation part. How are most folks getting the PD subnets into their IGPs? In my environment I don't run the DHCP server process on the router that is directly connected to the clients. I have seen documentation that cisco and juniper DHCPv6 processes are smart enough to insert that prefix into the routing table when they hand it out, but how is this handled in an environment with a central DHCP server? I do not currently run any PPPOE in my environment and I don't use RADIUS for the subscriber management. I would really just like to stick to DHCP ideally. If anyone has any pointers, I would appreciate it. Walmart GEOIP

I’m having an issue with a customer who for some reason is sent to the Mexican walmart site when they load it from USA. If anyone knows which geoip service they use or have a contact in Walmart for geoip issues please advise on or off list. (May be helpful to others) Norman
