BCP38 needs advertising

Outside of needing more details and examples, BCP38 could use more advertising. The best option, if they would accept it, is to have all RIRs mention BCP38 as well as require that mention of BCP38 be included in all IP justification requests to customers (so that those who receive netblocks from their ISPs are also aware of it). For ARIN, at least, having it mentioned in the attestation process wouldn't be a bad idea. At least someone of management would be aware of it. The only issue is see concerning the RIRs is that they may object to it being out of scope to their duties. However, informing people of something is not requiring implementation of something. On the other hand, we know that there are a great number of networks that don't participate with the community at large and may have no idea about BCP38 and why it is important. Jack

BCP38 - Internet Death Penalty

Ok, let's haul this up out of the other thread. It seems consensus that the anti-source-address-spoofing provisions (at least) of BCP38 have long since become critical to mitigating (and eventually preventing) UDP attacks like DNS reflection and such, and that such attacks are uniformly considered Bad Things. It also seems that, with 13 years to get it done, even if equipment makers have put usable working knobs into their edge routers and concentrators, sufficient numbers of IAPs have not started turning them on. The problem here is, of course, one of externalities and the Common Good, hard sales to make in a business environment. But have we reached the point where it's time to start trying? Do we need to define a flag day, say one year hence, and start making the sales pitch to our Corporate Overlords that we need to apply the IDP to edge connections which cannot prove they've implemented BCP38 (or at very least, the source address spoofing provisions thereof)? Put this in contracts and renewals, with the same penalty? Do the engineering heads at the top 10 tier-1/2 carriers carry enough water to make that sale to the CEOs? If that's a problem, the ISP can upsell a business-class connection that doesn't filter. ;)

Google public DNS flapping/non-functional

Could someone from Google contact me off list to discuss the public resolvers? I'm getting NXDOMAIN and then a proper response literally one second later. And from there it's just 20 GOTO 10...the resolver seems to be having a psychotic episode, or...at the very least...an identity crisis. Other public resolver services have no issue with this, but the problem seems to be affected by anything I throw at either 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 to resolve. (The IPv6 public resolvers are doing the same thing, I should point out.) I understand that those ingress addresses are any/multicast, so perhaps the problem I'm having is confined to a single datacenter in my region...and thus may not be affecting people outside of that DC.
