Of course, we all know the Mossad (Israeli secret services) and CIA did it as part of the global conspiracy against the Middle East and Third World ... In recent years I have restrained myself, but from time to time the 'old Rod Beck' manages to evade the supervision of the Super Ego (presumably you know your Freudian psychology). But seriously, double failures occur all the time. TAT-14 went dark for over 24 hours on December 28, 2003 when one cable was damaged and the switch of traffic to the other cable caused the second cable to experience a repeater failure. Blackholing traffic by ASN

I'm sure all of us have parts of the Internet that we block for one reason or another. I have existing methods for null routing traffic from annoying hosts and subnets on our border routers today (I'm still working on a network blackhole). However I've never tackled the problem by targeting a bad guy's ASN. What's the best option for null routing traffic by ASN? I could always add another deny statement in my inbound eBGP route-maps to match a new as-path ACL for _BAD-ASN_ to keep from accepting their routes to begin with. Are there any other good tricks that I can employ? I have another question along those same lines. Once I do have my blackhole up and running I can easily funnel hosts or subnets into the blackhole. What about funneling all routes to a particular ASN into the blackhole? Are there any useful tricks here? The ASN I'm referring to is that of the Russian Business Network. A Google search should turn up plenty of info for those that haven't heard of them. Thanks Justin

The government buys from the cheapest bidder, the most vulnerable systems and networks belong to them because of their bidding and purchase policies that do not reflect the problems of the time. I am loath to believe much of anything they say or have to offer since it is usually to little and to late for their solutions. By its nature, no public network can really be highly secure. If your vendor claims it is, grab your wallet and run. Its probably a waste of resources to attempt to build the network to protect the user against everything or even a lot of threats. Yet the public network relies on user trust in its operation. I think it would be interesting to watch a debate between a intelligence tech and a repair tech about whose tools need to be more robust and reliable. I suspect they would both be very vocal about their needs. The public network handled the Y2K rollover, you can't say the same thing about some of the intelligence systems :-) So if you are a network operator, what can you do technically (since this is not a law list)? I think the paper suffers a bit from "CSI" or "24" dazzle, everyone expects a DNA printout in the last 2 minutes of the show will find the bad guy, Intelligence Support tradeshows are filled with overpriced pieces of gear. Its usually the simple stuff that gets you. Most networks are filled with so many diagnostic features, buying a second set of gear is usually for administrative not functional reasons.

Argument for cleaning up BGP announcements

I have the misfortune of attempting to make the argument to one of the top 20 worst offenders on the CIDR report aggregation summary. If anybody has some good PHB fodder and info on general bad things that can happen by doing things this way please email me off list. I'll summarize what I get in a few days. There is no major TE or similar reason for them to be on there just bad practices since the last time I restructured there network. Obviously since things work today they are hesitant to change.
