Greetings all- As requested last Thursday at the Regional Techs meeting, I have created the mail list gnrs(a)merit.edu for the purpose of continuing the discussion on gix, naps, and route servers. The online patch described in CERT Advisory CA-93:02 has been replaced with a new patch. The size and checksum information in this Advisory have been updated to reflect the new online patch. For more information, please contact your authorized support center. If you are an authorized support provider, please contact NeXT through your normal channels. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Description The default NetInfo "_writers" properties are configured to allow users to install printers and FAX modems and to export them to the network without requiring assistance from the system administrator. They also allow a user to configure other parts of the system, such as monitor screens, without requiring help from the system administrator. Vulnerabilities exist in this facility that could allow users to gain unauthorized privileges on the system. II. Impact In the case of the "/printers" and the "/fax_modems" directories, the "_writers" property can permit users to obtain unauthorized root access to a system. In the "/localconfig/screens" directory, the "_writers" property can potentially permit a user to deny normal login access to other users. III. Solution To close the vulnerabilities, remove the "_writers" properties from the "/printers", "/fax_modems", and "/localconfig/screens" directories in all NetInfo domains on the network, and from all immediate subdirectories of all "/printers", "/fax_modems", and "/localconfig/screens" directories. The "_writers" properties may be removed using any one of the following three methods: A. As root, use the "niutil" command-line utility. For example, to remove the "_writers" property from the "/printers" directory: # /usr/bin/niutil -destroyprop . /printers _writers B. Alternatively, use the NetInfoManager application: open the desired domain, open the appropriate directory, select the "_writers" property, choose the "Delete" command [Cmd-r] from the "Edit" menu, and save the directory. C. To assist system administrators in editing their NetInfo domains, a shell script, "writersfix", is available via anonymous FTP from next.com (129.18.1.2): Filename Size Checksum -------- ---- -------- pub/Misc/Utilities/WritersFix.compressed 5600 25625 6 After transferring this file using BINARY transfer type, double-click on the file. A "WritersFix" directory will be created in your file system, containing the script ("writersfix") and some documentation ("WritersFix.rtf"). Consider removing "_writers" from other NetInfo directories as well (for example, "/locations"), noting the following trade-off between ease-of-use and security. By removing the "_writers" properties, the network and the computers on the network become more secure, but a system administrator's assistance is required where it previously was not required. Please refer to the NeXTSTEP Network and System Administration manual for additional information on "_writers". Note that the subdirectories of the "/users" directory have "_writers_passwd" set to the user whose account is described by the directory. Arrival times in Denver?

Is anyone with a car planning to arrive in Denver between 9 and 10PM this evening? Cathy and I are scheduled in at 8:42PM but the news people here are saying that flights out of San Francisco will be an hour late (apparently they can't deal with the severe weather we're having - occaisional light drizzle/rain and 55 degrees, sigh). An hour delay will push our arrival time back close enough to the time the Airporter stops running (10:15PM) to make me a little concerned. If necessary, we can always rent a car (which both of us like to avoid) but if anyone else is getting in at around the same time, maybe we can hook up with you...? We're on Continental flight #206 just in case anyone just happens to be there at around that time. --Vince

Schools and the US Domain

Hello: Many schools are now connecting to the Internet and registering in the Internet Domain Name System. A decision has been made by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (after consultation with the new INTERNIC Internet Registry and the FNC) to direct these school registrations to the US domain using the naming structure described in RFC 1386. There is a need for competent, experienced, volunteers to come forward to act as second and perhaps third level registeries and to operate delegated portions on the domain name space. Specifically, if you would like to operate a branch of the US domain name space according to the plan laid out in RFC 1386 to register schools please let us know. Contact <us-domain(a)isi.edu> --jon & Ann. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Registering Schools in the US Domain ------------------------------------ A few high schools (and other schools) have been registered in the EDU domain. This practice can not continue indefinitely since there are too many schools. There are two reasons (1) uniqueness of names, and (2) management of the database. 1. Name Uniqueness: There are many "Washington" high schools, only one can be "Washington.EDU" (actually none can be, since that name is used by a (University). There will be many name conlficts if all schools attempt to register directly under EDU. 2. Database Management: One goal of the DNS is to divide up the management of the name database in to small pieces. Each piece (or "zone" in DNS terminology) could be managed by a distinct administrator. Adding all the high schools to the EDU domain will make the already large zone file for EDU even larger, possibly to the point of being unmanagable. For both these reasons it is necessary to introduce structure into names. Structure provides a basis for making common names unique in context, and for dividing the management responsibility. The US Domain has a framework established and has registered a few high schools already in a structured scheme. The general form of this structured scheme is: <school-name>.<district-name>.K12.<state-code>.US for example: Hamilton.LA-Unified.K12.CA.US Generally school names are unique within a district, and this provides two points at which to delegate a branch of the database to distinct administrators -- the K12 administrator for each state, and the district administrator for each district within a state. Yes, these name are generally longer than the current apparent alternative in the EDU domain, but that cannot last long without a significant number of schools finding that their "obviously correct" name has already been used by some other school. The US Domain Administrator will delegate a branch of the US domain to an appropriate party. In some cases, this may be a particular school, a school district, or ever all of K12 for a state. The responsibility for managing a K12 branch or sub-branch may be delegated to an appropriate volunteer. We envision that such delegations of the schools DNS service may eventually migrate to someone else "more appropriate" from an administrative organizational point of view. The "obvious" state agency to manage the schools DNS branch may take some time to get up to speed on Internetting. In the meantime we can have the more advanced schools up and running. Winter Park Ski Resort and area general info ============================================ No night skiing...lifts open at 9am and close at 3:30pm. The free bus ride has been cancelled. However, we currently have two volunteers to load up their cars with winter wonderland enthusiasts. Donations for gas will be accepted! :-) Gart Brothers (sports store) in Denver has a bus service to Winter Park, $15/person round trip. Leaving from Lakeside Mall and Sheridan Blvd. Gart Brothers is a 1/2 hour drive from Boulder, by the way. Down Hill Skiing ================ Lift tickets: ------------- $36 (at the resort): full day, all lifts $30 (flatland price): full day, all lifts $24 (at the resort): 1/2 day (9am-noon or noon-3:30), all lifts $15 (at the resort): full day, mini mountain (4 lifts - medium skill) $3 (at the resort): full day, beginner (1 lift) (flatland costs of the other ski lift tickets still unknown to me) Where to purchase flatland tickets: Gart Brothers, Christie Sports -> sports stores Vickers -> gas station chain Safeway -> grocery store chain Ski Rentals ----------- Downhill skiis, boots, poles: $14/day at Winter Park Sports stores in the town of Winter Park: $11/day Cross Country Skiing ==================== Where to -------- Groomed trails - all supposedly very good! Idlewild (closed to Winter Park) Devils Thumb Snow Mountain Ranch National Forest - free Fees, rental and use -------------------- Idlewild & Devils Thumb all day, rental and use of trail: $15 all day, use of trail only: $9 half day, use of trail only: $6 Snow Mountain Ranch all day, rental and use of trail: $12 all day, use of trail only: $7 no half day packages Flanegans Sports Shop in Boulder will rent skiis under $10/day. Other activities at the Winter Park Ski Area ============================================ Snow Cat Tour: $17/person. This takes folks on a tour of the entire mountain area including both the ski areas and some of the restricted areas. The Snow Cat is apparently an enclosed (and thus warm) way for a maximum of 12 human beings to see the mountains. You are welcome to bring your own refreshments along. This tour is 2 hours long, with 3 short stops along the way. Tours leave at 10am, noon, and 2pm. Sun Spot Lodge Restaurant The "at the top of the mountain" restaurant. Good food, great view, and high prices...the "in" place to be I'm told. :-) Can only be reached by lift at $4/person. Ice skating Skate rental is $2/hour. No entrance charge for the rink itself. Tubing hill Actually located in Fraser City, about 2 miles from Winter Park. $8/hour for the rental of a tub and use of the runs. Seems there is night tubing!
