Merit/NSFNET Regional Techs Meeting

You are invited to attend the Merit/NSFNET Regional Techs Meeting, to be held January 21 and 22, 1992 in Boulder, Colorado. US WEST is generously providing the conference facilities for us this time around. NACR and WestNet will be participating in hosting sessions, and activities. Thus, we will be meeting at US WEST's Advanced Technologies Conference Center located in the University of Colorado's Research Park at 4001 Discovery Drive (corner of Colorado and Foothills Parkway). Enclosed at the end of this note is the still tentative agenda. You will be receiving a final agenda down the road abit. To RSVP please send your confirmation to nsf-seminar(a)merit.edu. Upon receipt of your rsvp we will send you more detailed directions, as confirmation of attendance. However, please do not expect a reply to your rsvp before January 4th, due to holiday staffing. RSVP's should be received *before* Friday January 15th. The absolute last day for rsvp`ing this time around is Tuesday January 19th at 15:00 EST. This is a hard time frame due to US WEST's security requirement that we submit a list of attendess 48 hours before arrival. Please note that registration will take place between 9am and 9:45am on Thursday, with coffee, donuts, muffins, etc. being served during this time. Upon arrive at US WEST you will be asked to sign a security form stating that you agree not to wonder from the first floor of the center unless escorted by a US WEST employee. They will then issue you a yellow badge which must be turned in at the end of each day. On Friday morning please allow extra time for picking up your security badge again. For those not attending the sessions on Thursday morning you may register as you arrive. Allow extra time for this. Here are four suggestions for housing in the Boulder area. Clarion Harvest House 1-800-CLARION for reservations --------------------- Located at 1345 28th Street, Boulder Colorado. The cost of a single is $65, a double $75. This is the largest hotel in Boulder, with 16 acres of land. They provide a running track, in/outdoor pools, 5 indoor tennis courts, a pub and a restaurant. It is 1 block from the University of Colorado and about 4 blocks (via a nice bike path on Boulder Creek) from US WEST. We have blocked 40 rooms here. Golden Buff (Best Western) 1-800-999-2833 for reservations -------------------------- Located at 1725 28th Stree, Boulder, Colorado. The cost of a single room with a queen size bed is $48, a deluxe single room with a queen size bed is $55, a double room with queen size beds is $50 and a deluxe double room with QUEEN size beds is $55. The Golden Buff is 1/4 mile from the University of Colorado and about the same from US WEST. Residence Inn By Marriot 1-800-331-3131 for reservations ------------------------ Located at 3030 Center Green Drive, Boulder, Colorado. The cost of a single is $69. Suites are available and cost $79 which includes continental breakfast and a cocktail hour during the week. It is located 1 mile from the University of Colorado and about the same from US WEST. Hotel Boulderado 1-800-433-4344 for reservations ---------------- Located at 2115 13th Street, Boulder, Colorado. The cost for a standard room is $79, a deluxe room is $89 with a fee of $12 for a second person. This hotel is one of Boulders historic buildings and from what I hear quite impressive. It is 1 mile from the University of Colorado in the heart of the central downtown area. Unlike the influx of football fans that complicated our last meeting in Ann Arbor, Boulder has no "massive crowd" attracting special event taking place the week of our meeting. The airport is the Denver Stapleton International Airport which is about 35 miles from Boulder. There is a shuttle to and from the airport, called the Airporter (1-303-321-3222). The cost is $9.50 each way and runs every hour on the hour. IBM RT Workstations

Subject: T1 NSFNet NSS Dismantling - January 1993 Dear Regional Techs: After the successful transition of all NSFNet traffic from the T1 NSFNet to the T3 ANSnet/NSFnet, the T1 network has been entirely dismantled. This event is a significant point in the evolutionary history of the NSFnet and the Internet. During the next few weeks, we will be scheduling IBM Customer Engineers to remove the T1 NSS router equipment from your sites. First, however, we would like to offer to the regional networks that have hosted the T1 NSS equipment, the opportunity to retain for your internal use some of the IBM RT workstations that comprised the Network Switching Systems of the T1 network. This equipment would be a donation from ANS - there would be no charge for the IBM RT workstations. Approximately 4-6 RT workstations are available at each T1 NSS site. Please note that due to the nature of their use as routers, the majority of the IBM RTs are NOT equipped with a monitor or keyboard. Recipients of donated RT workstations must make their own arrangements to provide monitors and keyboards for these machines. Regional Techs Meeting Agenda

Hi. As Sheri said we are working on setting up a meeting of the NSFNET Regional Techs in Boulder on January 21-22. We realize that there is a FARNET meeting at the same time, and our idea was that while there wouldn't be formal overlap of meeting topics or agenda, it might be nice to create possibilities for informal get-togethers. For example, evening meetings or weekend skiing including both FARNET (regional net management types) and Regional Tech people. The reason for this meeting is that we thought the regional techs should have some time to get together outside of the more general IETF context for more focused discussion, perhaps leading to specific actions. There were agreements in ORAD, NJM, and BGPD that we should target June 1993 as the timeframe for implementation of BGP-4 and route aggregation. This raises a host of issues and operational questions, and led in our discussions to proposed agenda below. Our idea was that we could nominate one or two people to lead each session, and also "pack" the audience with some friendly experts on the respective topics. So far we've heard from WestNet, SDSC, BARRnet, UIUC, Sprint/ICM, SESQUInet, NorthWestNet, Merit, ANS, ESnet and NEARnet, that they can indeed attend at this time. We'd like to hear some more confirmations before we send out the final invitation, just to make sure the date and place is ok with everyone. The US West folks have made a generous offer to provide conference facilities at no cost to us, and NCAR and WestNet are also participating in hosting sessions and activities. Following is the first cut at the proposed agenda. Happy Holidays everyone! Mark Topics for the Seminar: Focus of the the seminar is Operational planing for 6-8 months. 1.) Implementation of CIDR and Supernetting CIDR is billed as a short term solution, and to get started there are immediate operational actions needed. To quote V. Fuller, J. Yu and T. Li, what is needed are "strategies for address assignment of the existing IP address space with a view to conserve the address space and stem the explosive growth of routing tables in default-route-free routers run by transit routing domain providers." Subtopics to be covered include: - Phase-in of route aggregation - Policy configuration for aggregation - BGP-4 test plan - Requirement for renumbering 2.) Address allocation strategies with CIDR This session should cover the address administration aspects of CIDR. We will need to be prepared to handle configuration of address blocks, and to do this there should be good communication between the network operators and those handing out the network numbers. Thus we are inviting the folks from the NIC and possibly the IANA. 3.) GIX, NAPs, Route Servers There have been several experiments to verify the technology that is to be used in the "Network Access Points" proposed by NSF, including tests of route server configurations and the "MAE-East" distributed network. The IEPG has proposed that the MAE-East be used as a Global Internet Exchange to allow European networks to connect in a common subnet in Washington DC. Since it is likely that more prototype or even production NAPs might be created in advance of the 1994 timeframe, it seems necessary for the network operators to understand the internet routing implications that may result. The purpose of this session will be to discuss upcoming activities to support routing on this network, and to solicit ideas on how the system should work. 4.) Current Status /Problems This session will cover the NSFNET network status, including recent events such as dismantling the T1 backbone, current status and future plans. In addition to a status report we would like to have a discussion of Merit's performance, what general problems have been encountered, and how service quality can be improved. 5.) Transition to "Next Generation NSFNET" Major transitions of internet operations need quite a lot of planning in order to happen smoothly. If nothing else, Merit has learned this over the last few years:-). Though it is too soon to know who the new players will be for the NSFNET vBNS, RA and NAP providers, probably enough is known to project some of the potential problem areas, forecast changes that may occur as a result of the new architecture, and suggest some preparations that can be made in advance.

Merit/NSFNET Regional-Techs Meeting Announcement ================================================ Hi. We are tentatively planning to hold a Merit/NSFNET Regional-Techs Meeting on January 21st and 22nd in Boulder, Colorado (in lieu of an Advanced Topics Seminar). Quite a novelity for us to hold this outside of Ann Arbor! While this is extrememly short notice for such a meeting, especially with the holidays upon us, we feel there is an urgent need to get together before the next IETF and begin planning for the expected summer time implementation of CIDR in the Internet (including BGP4 deployment, route aggregation, and management of the net number space). Other topics we are looking at for this meeting include the establishment of the GIX, transition to the next generation NSFnet, and our usual network status update. Overall, we are trying to get a feel for how many of you would be interested in attending this meeting, given its date and location. Thus, would you please send me a reply within the next few days to cast your vote on this? Positive responses will not be considered rsvp's..we are just trying to solidify our plans at the moment. If Boulder in January is a go I will be sending out a formal notice complete with an agenda, hotel information, etc., hopefully on or before next Wednesday (the 23rd). Hi. We have substantially revised the Network Announcement Change Request (NACR) template, as part of our effort to automate the policy routing data base update and configuration process. Please give us your comments on this new template, and we would like to start using it on January 1. Mark [nis.nsf.net:nsfnet/announced.networks/template.net] Version 6.5 18 Dec 1992 NSFNET Configuration Request Template for the NSFNET policy-based routing data base ---- Network Announcement Change Request ---- This document contains information needed for NSFNET regionals, midlevels, and peer networks to add or modify network numbers and routing information in Merit's NSFNET policy-based routing data base. Due to the rapid increase of network numbers in the database, it has become necessary to design and implement a system where requests are automatically parsed to eliminate the need for a similarly increasing labor pool to do the data entry! The template form contained in this document represents the first in a series steps that are planned to streamline the database entry process. While we believe this automation will make the database process for network number registration more efficient, it is also our intention that it remains a cooperative process between Merit and the regional technical network administrators. The Merit/NSFNET Internet Engineering Group 1.0 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS ------------------------ 1.1 Configuration Instructions -------------------------- Configuration requests should be submitted by e-mail to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu by the designated Routing Administrators for the Autonomous Systems of the NSFNET. The text of the message should contain the template given in section 2.0 of this document. The first word of the subject line of the message should be the first IP number for which you are requestiong action. Configurations are typically done by Merit on Tuesday and Friday mornings of every week. The installation of new configuration files is performed Tuesday and Friday mornings from 05:00-08:00 (Eastern time), so some backbone instability may be experienced during this period. Requests should be received by noon (Eastern time) on Monday (for Tuesday morning configs) and noon (Eastern time) on Thursday (for Friday morning configs). Merit will request separate authorization from the National Science Foundation on a per-net basis to allow non-US network numbers to be added. Additions of non-US networks therefore may result in additional delays. Merit maintains mail lists for each Autonomous System (AS) announced on the backbone in the syntax: as<number>@merit.edu. In the interest of improving turnaround time for configuration requests that involve inbound announcements from multiple organizations, we ask that all of the appropriate AS mailing groups be copied when you submit the original request to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu. We also ask that the copied Routing Administrators reply to all with their approvals or denials of the requested addition(s) or change(s). An Internet network number must have been assigned by the Network Information Center (NIC.DDN.MIL) prior to its addition to the NSFNET routing database. If it was not assigned by the time of this request, a message will be sent by Merit to the requestor stating that the network has not been added to the NSFNET policy-based routing database. It is then up to the requestor to resubmit the application after registration with the NIC. 1.2 Template Instructions --------------------- This form will be read by an automatic parser and bounced back to you if it is unparsable or if required data is missing. Thus, if you wish to add a comment or for other reasons have your request read by a human please replace the word "Yes" with "No" in the "Autoparse:" line at the beginning of the NACR. The organizational information you supply with this form will be checked against that held by the NIC in an attempt to keep our network information synchronized with the NIC. The NACR template information consists of global NACR information followed by one or more network number entries. The global NACR information applies to each network number entry that follows it. However, any line of the global information can be overridden for a particular network by specifying that line in the net number entry. For example, the global information may indicate "Net_Country Code: US" but one net you are submitting might be located in Canada. Thus, you may overide US by including the line: "Net_Country_Code: CA" in the net number entry. The country code requested should comply with the two letter ISO 3166 codes. Net_Country Code: This is the country where the network is located (vs. the organization that is responsible for the net). If the net spans multiple countries please try to pick the one which you feel best represents the net. The country code requested on this line must comply with the two letter ISO 3166 codes. A listing of these codes may be ftp'ed from nis.nsf.net:nsfnet/announced.networks/country.codes. Intended Use of Network: Indicate type from this list: Commercial (C), Education (E), Government - non-military (G), Government - military (M), Research (R), Other (O). Educational Organization Type: If the intended use type is Educational, specify the type of educational organization. It is preferred that the Carnegie Classification code be specified here, but if that is not known, indicate broad type: 4year, 4year+, 2year, K-12. The Carnegie Classification codes are included below. Backbone: T3. (Just to avoid any ambiguity. ;-) Action being requested (A/D/C): This line must indicate if the inbound announcements you are requesting for this network will be a change to existing inbound announcements to the NSFNET (C), a compete deletion of all inbound announcements to the NSFNET (D), or if this request is to add a network that is not currently being announced to the NSFNET (A). Inbound Announcements to NSFNET: This input line(s) should be filled out with the Autonomous System numbers which will announce the network(s). Any number of ASes may be listed on this line; at least one is required. The ASes should be listed in order of preference, with the most highly preferred AS listed first, as in 233 177 266. Please note that these are inbound routing announcements TO the NSFNET backbone; which means that the specified priority impacts the path of how packets are routed toward the specified network. Comments: Comment lines are most useful when the autoparse option is not in use, though the routing consultants will generally read these comments in the normal process of approving database updates. Please see the first paragraph of the NACR for information on bypassing the parser. Please precede EACH comment line with the "Comments:" string.
