From: Vimal Solanki, Curtis Villamizar, Jordan Becker Draft Standard RFC-1188 states that "the MTU of FDDI networks shall be 4352 octets". At present, the IBM routers temporarily violate this as explained below. Currently we have 4000 byte MTU paths among all FDDI ENSSs. This is due to the fact that buffers are allocated in the current software such that the RS/960 T3 card can not support larger than a 4000 bytes MTU. Packets received larger than 4000 bytes are fragmented on the FDDI card (with the first fragment being 4000 bytes). This will be fixed when AIX 3.2 is deployed (scheduled for March). The MTU will will then increase to 4352 bytes on both the T3 and FDDI cards. We will still be able to *receive* packets up to 4470 bytes in size, and fragment them (with first fragment being 4352 bytes). However we will not *send* packets of size larger than 4352 bytes. > Can someone estimate for me the impact on an ENSS of fragmenting >4000 > byte packets? The FDDI card will handle the maximum possible fragmentation at the maximum possible bandwidth without any performance problems. In other words, if every single packet needs to be fragmented, the FDDI card can still handle it without dropping any packets for 22.5 Mbps full-duplex data stream between itself and the T3 card. This was tested with an ENSS router equipped with FDDI and the 22.5 Mbps HSSI/T3 card. While we did not run this specific test in the presence of T/960 Ethernet, T1 cards, or the new full T3 cards, the performance should still be good. Looking at ENSS128, there are no requests for buffers denied. There have been no errors at all in card-to-card, or card-to-system transfers which is where one would expect to see a problem due to fragmentation. > Please advise. We suggest that you set your MTUs to 4470 since this will ensure autonomous switching on your Cisco. When we go to AIX 3.2 we will use 4352 bytes MTU. This will still ensure almost zero fragmentation since almost all traffic will be sinked/sourced from end hosts. --------------------- RFC 1188 IP and ARP on FDDI Networks October 1990 MAC Layer Details Packet Size The FDDI MAC specification [4] defines a maximum frame size of 9000 symbols (4500 octets) for all frame fields, including four symbols (two octets) of preamble. This leaves roughly 4470 octets for data after the LLC/SNAP header is taken into account. However, in order to allow future extensions to the MAC header and frame status fields, it is desirable to reserve additional space for MAC overhead. Therefore, the MTU of FDDI networks shall be 4352 octets. This provides for 4096 octets of data and 256 octets of headers at the network layer and above. Implementations must not send packets larger than the MTU. Gateway implementations must be prepared to accept packets as large as the MTU and fragment them when necessary. Gateway implementations should be able to accept packets as large as can be carried within a maximum size FDDI frame and fragment them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CA-93:03 CERT Advisory February 3, 1993 SunOS File/Directory Permissions ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The default permissions on a number of files and directories in SunOS 4.1, 4.1.1, 4.1.2, and 4.1.3 are set incorrectly. These problems are relevant for the sun3, sun3x, sun4, sun4c, and sun4m architectures. They have been fixed in SunOS 5.0. (Note that SunOS 5.0 is the operating system included in the Solaris 2.0 software distribution.) An updated patch to reset these permissions is available from Sun. CERT has seen an increasing number of attackers exploit these problems on systems and we encourage sites to consider installing this patch. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Description File permissions on numerous files were set incorrectly in the distribution tape of 4.1.x. A typical example is that a file which should have been owned by "root" was set to be owned by "bin". Not all sites will need or want to install the patch for this problem. The decision of what user id should own most system files and directories depends on the administrative practices of the site. It is quite reasonable to run a system where the majority of files are owned by "bin" as long as the entire system is run in a manner consistent with that practice. As distributed, the SunOS configuration expects most system files to be owned by "root". The fact that some are not creates security problems. Therefore, sites that are running the SunOS versions listed above as distributed should install the patch described below. Sites that have made an informed choice to configure their system differently may instead want to review the patch script and consider which, if any, of the changes should be made on their system. II. Impact Depending on the specific configuration of the local site, the default permissions may allow local users to gain "root" access. III. Solution 1) Sun has provided a script to reset file and directory permissions to their correct values. The script is available in Sun's Patch #100103 version 11. This patch can be obtained via local Sun Answer Centers worldwide as well as through anonymous FTP from the ftp.uu.net (137.39.1.9) system in the /systems/sun/sun-dist directory. Patch ID Filename Checksum 100103-11 100103-11.tar.Z 19847 6 Please note that Sun Microsystems sometimes updates patch files. If you find that the checksum is different please contact Sun Microsystems or CERT for verification. 2) Uncompress the file, extract the contents of the tar archive, and review the README file. % uncompress 100103-11.tar.Z % tar xfv 100103-11.tar % cat README 3) This patch will reset the group ownership of certain files to either "staff" or "bin". Make sure you have entries in the "/etc/group" file for these accounts. % grep '^staff:' /etc/group % grep '^bin:' /etc/group If you do not have both of these you will need to either add the missing account(s) or modify the patch script (4.1secure.sh) to reflect group ownerships appropriate for your site. (Note that the security problems are fixed by the ownerships and mode bits specified in the patch - not by the group ownerships. Therefore, changing the group ownerships does not invalidate the patch.) 4) As "root", run the patch script. # sh 4.1secure.sh This patch fixes Sun BugId's 1046817, 1047044, 1048142, 1054480, 1037153, 1039292, and 1042662. 5) The patch script will set "/usr/kvm/crash" to mode 02700 owned by "root". While this is not insecure, since only "root" can run the program, CERT recommends that the setgid bit be removed to prevent abuse if world execute permission were to be added some time later. T1 Backbone NSS dismantling

To: NSF-Regional-Techs(a)merit.edu Subject: T1 NSS Dismantling Starting in the second half of February, as part of the T1 NSFNet NSS Dismantling Plan, IBM Customer Engineers will be visiting each of the NSFNET sites in order to dismantle the existing router equipment used to support the T1 backbone network, which was disconnected in December '92. To ensure a smooth process, two visits to the site will be scheduled. During the first visit, the equipment inventory will be verified. Additionally, all of the equipment will be disconnected and prepared for shipment. At that time, according to prior individual agreements, the extra RT machines will be donated to the host regional network providers who have requested them. During the second visit, the equipment will be packed and shipped. The first round of visits will be scheduled over the period of two weeks starting February 15 1993. The second visits will be scheduled during the first half of March. You will be contacted directly within the next couple of weeks in order to coordinate the exact date and time of these site visits. Several sites have asked us if they can power down the equipment during the interim. There is no problem with this, although we do request that the equipment not be moved or physically reconfigured in any way until we arrive on-site. For the purpose of serving OSI Encapsulation requirements, two RT machines equipped with one set of monitor and keyboard will remain on-site. This equipment would be mounted in one of the existing racks and will remain there until OSI support is available on the T3 Backbone (estimated for March '93). Empty equipment racks will be offered to the host regional network providers that express an interest in keeping these racks. Advanced notification of such an interest will be appreciated.
