Rafting followup

Here's the deal - the day and river of choice would appear to be the Cheat river on Saturday, June 12th. The cost will be $67.84 per person and I have a tentative reservation for 10 people at 10:00AM (for Regional Techs folks, this means leaving D.C. at 6:00AM for the 3.5 hour drive; Pittsburgh people don't have to leave until 8:00AM, assuming they take the "fast route" that Rudy and I mapped out during our season as guides on the Cheat...). In order to confirm the reservation, payment in full must be made within ten days of today. Note that this payment will be NON-REFUNDABLE, so if it rains (or snows :-) or if the river is low, we still pay. In the very unlikely event that the river is completely unrunnable for some reason (i.e. a flash flood, hurricane, etc.) and the rafting company is forced to cancel, we will receive a refund. What I need next: I would like to have a final count of people going by Wednesday, the 26th, so if you are a definite yes, I need to hear from you by then. DON'T SEND MONEY NOW - just confirm whether you're definite. At the end of the day Wednesday, I will send a confirmation to all and will at that point solicit payment. If necessary (if we end up with more than 10 people), I will also call the rafting company on Thursday to adjust the reservation. Nine days from today - on Wednesday, June 2nd, I will count the checks I've received for payment and call the rafting company to charge the full payment for that many people (plus me!) to my credit card. Since no money will actually be committed until the 2nd, it will be possible to bail out before then (I'll either tear-up your check or send it back to you), though I'd obviously prefer no cancellations from the list of people who confirm by Wednesday. So, let me know by Wednesday if you're a definite "yes" - if we do need to increase the reservation beyond 10 people, it should be done ASAP, as space on their June 12th trip is limited. --Vince

=============================================================================== CA-93:08 CERT Advisory May 24, 1993 SCO /bin/passwd Vulnerability ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The CERT Coordination Center and the Santa Cruz Operation, Inc., (SCO) have recently identified a potential for compromising system integrity on several releases of SCO's Operating Systems. This potential will not allow unauthorized access to a system, but it may deny legitimate users the ability to log onto the system. The releases of SCO product that are affected are as follows: SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 2.0 SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 4.0 SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 4.0 with Maintenance Supplement Version 4.1 SCO Open Desktop Release 1.1.x SCO Open Desktop Release 2.0 Santa Cruz Operation and CERT recommend that sites using these SCO products take action to eliminate this vulnerability from their systems. This problem will be corrected in upcoming releases of SCO operating systems. The Santa Cruz Operation has provided a Support Level Supplement (SLS), as described below. They have also provided an interim workaround until sites can obtain and install the Supplement. Description A problem exists in /bin/passwd in the SCO operating system versions detailed above. II. Impact This vulnerability can deny legitimate users the ability to log onto the system. III. Solution The Santa Cruz Operation and CERT recommend that all affected sites obtain and install the Support Level Supplement. Instructions are provided below. The Santa Cruz Operation and CERT also recommend that sites consider applying the following workaround until they are able to obtain and install the Support Level Supplement. A. Workaround This workaround will prevent users from changing their passwords until the Support Level Supplement is installed. As root, modify the permission on the existing /bin/passwd to prevent misuse. # /bin/chmod 2110 /bin/passwd Before installing the update, the permissions should again be reset. As root, modify the permission on the existing /bin/passwd. # /bin/chmod 2111 /bin/passwd B. Supplement SCO has prepared a Support Level Supplement (SLS) to address this issue. This is free to all customers, regardless of Support status. Sites can obtain this update via anonymous FTP from ftp.sco.COM (132.147.106.6). Other systems may or may not be similar in their UUCP setup. Before attempting to transfer, you must have a modem configured to dial out from your computer. For more information on configuring a modem, see the chapter on "Adding Terminals and Modems" in the System Administrator's Guide. Once you have your modem configured for dialing out, you must set up your UUCP configuration to recognize the SCO system which contains the files. The uucp(C) command to transfer this file into the local directory /usr/spool/uucppublic on your system would be: uucp sosco!/usr/spool/uucppublic/SLS/uod368.Z /usr/spool/uucppublic/uod368.Z (If you are using the C shell command interpreter, you must enter a backslash character "\" before the exclamation mark "!" to prevent the C shell history mechanism from intercepting the rest of the command line.) A Preliminary Agenda and Arrangements Information follow. Preliminary Agenda I. Configuration of NSFNET for Aggregation (1 hour) Steve Richardson, Merit Dale Johnson, Merit This session will be a presentation of an update to the Internet Draft that was circulated at the Columbus IETF. It will cover the functions that the NSFNET will support and how midlevels can request configuration for the ENSS's in the backbone. The structure of the Merit Policy Routing Database for aggregation support will also be covered, as well as a proposed Aggregate Registry. II. GATED Support of CIDR (45 minutes) Dennis Ferguson, ANS Jeff Honig, Cornell This session will present the capabilities of gated with respect to CIDR. In particular the BGP implementation and status will be described, as well as the configuration capabilities of gated with BGP-4. III. Registration Issues for IP Aggregates (30 minutes) Elise Gerich, Merit Scott Williamson, InterNIC/NSI Mark Kosters, InterNIC/NSI The registration of aggregates into the various databases, e.g. Merit/NSFNET, RIPE and InterNIC, requires some changes to the way contact and organizational information is associated with network number/name. This discussion will cover the changes necessary to the databases, and it is hoped that the group will propose specific actions to resolve the questions including new management tools. IV. Proposals for Representation and Sharing of Routing Policy Information (45 minutes) Andrew Partan, AlterNet Enke Chen, Merit This session will include an overview of the paper, RIPE-81, which is a proposed database representation for inter-AS routing policy. It will also cover the paper on RPDL from Merit. The purpose of the session will be to summarize the recent discussions about the differences between the two approaches and how they might be combined. V. Route Server Deployment (30 minutes) Mark Knopper, Merit Andrew Partan, AlterNet Deployment of route servers at the MAE-East "experimental NAP" is taking place, and the status of this cooperative effort will be given in this session. The routing plan for each of the route servers will be covered, along with configuration issues. VI. NSFNET Policy Routing Database Implementation Status (30 minutes) Enke Chen, Merit Andy Adams, Merit Andy and Enke will present an overview of the Informix database system that is now being used to configure the backbone, and the tools that have been implemented to allow regional-techs to automate submission of network announcement change requests and to perform direct queries to the database in different ways. Implementation of new tools for Merit configuration staff have improved productivity tremendously. This will also be an opportunity to brainstorm on the types of tools that are needed to support route aggregation. VII. NSFNET Solicitation Status (30 minutes) Dan Jordt, NorthWestNet Now that the NSFNET solicitation has been released, many of the regionals have difficult choices to make. Many of the problems are common and this session will be an opportunity to discuss issues from the technical perspective. VIII. ANSNET Backbone Status Report (1 hour) Jordan Becker, ANS The T3 backbone status will be covered including recent and planned deployment of new software and hardware for the backbone routers. -- / 30 / --
