The revised plan is as follows: No action will be taken at noon as previously announced. Instead, Merit will remove this route from the Internet at Suranet to the DOD NIC from the routing table updates to be published this evening. The physical link will remain active, but traffic is expected to decline on the link as the routes are refreshed throughout the Internet and Milnet. On Monday, 6/7/93, GSI will request Suranet to deconfigure this physical link, assuming all goes well. On Tuesday, 6/8/93, the leased circuit will be terminated by the telephone carrier. This approach will result in a more orderly termination of the link. As before, please feel free to call me regarding this action at 703-802-8402. **************************************************************** ATTACHMENT ---------- Reference: RFC 1400 As per our discussion today, the T1 connection between FIX-East(at SURANET) and the DDN NIC will be deactivated on noon on Thursday, 6/3/93. The leased circuit which comprises this connection will officially be terminated by the phone company 6/8/93. This schedule will provide the following benefits: 1. All parties will know in advance the time and date of the change. 2. The change will happen in prime time for most network operating centers involved in the change. 3. Operations staffs will be able to watch for the impact of the loss of the link, if any, and will be able to take appropriate actions. 4. If major problems arise, the link can be restored a relatively short amount of time. 5. If major problems arise, the cancellation of the leased circuit comprising the connection can be rescinded, provided that GSI is so directed by DISA. Authorized Routing Administrators: During the past months, we've been developing a scalable approach to the configuration of the NSFNET/ANSnet backbone as part of our continued effort to provide and maintain accurate routing information and a high level of service. To this end, Merit is pleased to announce - a new NACR (version 7.0), and - a new service, a NACR server, available via telnetting to merit.edu for filling out the new NACR. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? ===================== We need this new NACR and server, and your help in converting to these, in order to expedite processing of your NACRs through: - enhancing validation of information _upon entry_ and aid in correcting it at that time, - reducing unnecessary mail, - providing for automatic 'cc'-ing of appropriate ASs, - allowing for parsing of consistent NACRs, - and more! This move is necessary in order to provide you with a reasonable level of service and to provide Merit with a scalable, less resource-intensive method of providing the configuration service. You may recall you were, in one way or another, involved in some intrusions from Australia between November 89 and March (or so) 90 (over 3 years ago). The first of the criminal cases resulting from that intrusion has been completed - that of Richard Jones (Electron) who pleaded guilty (on May 12) to 14 counts, involving intrusions into systems around the world. Today he was given a 6 months suspended gaol (jail if you're illiterate) sentence, and 300 hours of unpaid community work. Jones was the one of the three involved in this lot who spent part of the time between then and now locked up in a mental hospital. The other two involved are due for trial later, they're supposedly going to plead not guilty - Jones is supposedly going to give evidence against them. Its hard to see how they can hope to claim "It wasn't me", so I would presume their defence will have to be on technical grounds (lack of jurisdiction, lack of constitutional power, ... who knows). kre %%% overflow headers %%% To: "J. Hi. SURAnet has offered to provide a (limited) number of dialup lines for slip/ppp access, during the regional-techs meeting. The only problem with this is that dialup from VA to MD would incur long distance charges. If you think this would be useful, I'll confirm with Jack Waters to go ahead and set this up. Rafting followup

Here's the deal - the day and river of choice would appear to be the Cheat river on Saturday, June 12th. The cost will be $67.84 per person and I have a tentative reservation for 10 people at 10:00AM (for Regional Techs folks, this means leaving D.C. at 6:00AM for the 3.5 hour drive; Pittsburgh people don't have to leave until 8:00AM, assuming they take the "fast route" that Rudy and I mapped out during our season as guides on the Cheat...). In order to confirm the reservation, payment in full must be made within ten days of today. Note that this payment will be NON-REFUNDABLE, so if it rains (or snows :-) or if the river is low, we still pay. In the very unlikely event that the river is completely unrunnable for some reason (i.e. a flash flood, hurricane, etc.) and the rafting company is forced to cancel, we will receive a refund. What I need next: I would like to have a final count of people going by Wednesday, the 26th, so if you are a definite yes, I need to hear from you by then. DON'T SEND MONEY NOW - just confirm whether you're definite. At the end of the day Wednesday, I will send a confirmation to all and will at that point solicit payment. If necessary (if we end up with more than 10 people), I will also call the rafting company on Thursday to adjust the reservation. Nine days from today - on Wednesday, June 2nd, I will count the checks I've received for payment and call the rafting company to charge the full payment for that many people (plus me!) to my credit card. Since no money will actually be committed until the 2nd, it will be possible to bail out before then (I'll either tear-up your check or send it back to you), though I'd obviously prefer no cancellations from the list of people who confirm by Wednesday. So, let me know by Wednesday if you're a definite "yes" - if we do need to increase the reservation beyond 10 people, it should be done ASAP, as space on their June 12th trip is limited. --Vince
