Hi. If you use any of the NSFNET-related reports on nic.merit.edu,
we'd really appreciate hearing any comments you may have. Thanks
to those who've responded so far to our survey. And keep those
replies coming! Also, please feel free to help us out by forwarding
this survey to anyone you know who may use the reports but who may
not be on the regional-techs or nwg list. Thanks again.

Subject: report usage survey
Hi all.
As part of the NSFNET semi-weekly configuration process, Merit produces
a collection of reports summarizing network configuration information.
These reports are:
ans_core.now as-as.now as-gw.now as-site.now country.now
gate-gw.now net-comp.now net-ter.now net-net.now netcount.now
non-us.now nss-as.now nss-gw.now
A brief description of each report appears at the end of this survey.
We are currently re-assessing what reports we generate and would like
to determine exactly which reports are the most useful to our customers. Also,
customers have requested other reports that we do not now produce. In order
to better serve the network community with these reports, we ask you to
complete the following survey. Please respond to report-survey(a)merit.edu by
June 30, 1993. We hope that some ideas can be discussed informally
at the upcoming Regional Tech's meeting in Reston.
Please note that the deployment of CIDR is going to necessitate several
report changes. For instance, perhaps all occurrences of network numbers
will need to be replaced with aggregate number/net mask pairs. Comments
regarding these issues would be most welcome.
(1) Which, if any, of the above reports do you use?
(2) Of the reports you use, are there fields that you ignore and that therefore
could be removed?
(3) How often do you use these reports?
(4) Are our reports critical to your operations?
(5) Please provide a brief description of how you use these reports.
(6) Are you aware of the public Merit Policy Routing Database clients?
(They can be found with documentation on merit.edu:/pub/src/prdbshow.tar.Z)
(7) What information would you like us to provide, either through a client
or a report, which we do not currently provide? Is there an existing
report which would meet your need if additional fields were added?
(8) Additional comments
Individual responses to this survey will remain confidential.
Thank you for your time and thoughts.
Sincerely,
Merit/NSFNET staff,
Merit Network, Inc.

Okay,
I have made copies of the slides we (Daniel and I) presented at
the meeting.
they can be retrieved from ftp.ripe.net as:
ripe/presentations/nsf-reg-dfk-RIPE-81.ps.Z
ripe/presentations/nsf-reg-tony-RS.ps.Z
They are "4 ups" i.e. 4 to a page, to save some paper.
Also, it seemed a the meetoing their was quite a bit of interest in RIPE
documents.
I enclose a README at the end with a full list but also give you a heads up on
the ones of direct interest.
ripe-60 -- Pre--ripe-81 ideas
ripe-81 -- Current thinkinh on routing policy presentation format
ripe-82 -- Essentially the ideas behind the RS project
ripe-72 -- How Europe does it's Internet Registry and the conditions
ripe-85 -- How Europe does the delegation of 193.in-addr with the
providers.

CA-93:09 CERT Advisory
June 11, 1993
SunOS/Solaris /usr/lib/expreserve Vulnerability
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The CERT Coordination Center has received information concerning a
vulnerability in /usr/lib/expreserve in Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Sun)
operating system (SunOS). This vulnerability affects all sun3 and sun4
architectures and supported versions of SunOS including 4.1, 4.1.1, 4.1.2,
4.1.3, Solaris 2.1 (SunOS 5.1), and Solaris 2.2 (SunOS 5.2).
This problem has become widely known and CERT recommends that sites
take action to address this vulnerability as soon as possible.
Sun has produced a patch for SunOS 4.1, 4.1.1, 4.1.2, and 4.1.3 addressing
this vulnerability for sun3 and sun4 architectures. Sun is developing a
patch for SunOS 5.x/Solaris 2.x systems and it will be released as soon as
testing is complete. A workaround is provided below that can be used on
all systems, including Solaris, until a patch is available and installed.
The patch can be obtained from local Sun Answer Centers worldwide as
well as through anonymous FTP from the ftp.uu.net (137.39.1.9) system
in the /systems/sun/sun-dist directory. In Europe, this patch is
available from mcsun.eu.net (192.16.202.1) in the /sun/fixes directory.
Patch ID Filename Checksum
101080-1 101080-1.tar.Z 45221 13
Please note that Sun sometimes updates patch files. If you find that
the checksum is different please contact Sun or CERT for verification.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I. Description
Expreserve is a utility that preserves the state of a file being
edited by vi(1) or ex(1) when an edit session terminates abnormally
or when the system crashes. A vulnerability exists that allows
users to overwrite any file on the system.
II. Impact
It is possible to gain root privileges using this vulnerability.
III. Solution
A. If you are running SunOS 4.1, 4.1.1, 4.1.2, or 4.1.3, obtain and
install the patch according to the instructions included with
the patch.
B. If you are running Solaris install the following workaround.
This workaround will disable expreserve functionality.
The result of this workaround is that if vi(1) or ex(1) is running,
and the sessions are interrupted, the files being edited will not
be preserved and all edits not explicitly saved by the user will
be lost. Users should be encouraged to save their files often.
As root, remove the execute permissions on the existing
/usr/lib/expreserve program:
# /usr/bin/chmod a-x /usr/lib/expreserve
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dialup access instructions for the Regional-Techs
Meeting in Reston 6/10-11, 1993
Hi. Sprint, SURAnet and ANS have all provided dialup access for
attendees of the meeting. Each has different phone numbers and
dialing instructions. All provide telnet access, and both SURA
and ANS offer SLIP/PPP access. With ANS you'll have to ask for
an id code specially for yourself. Here are the instructions.

SURAANET DIAL INSTRUCTIONS
From: "Roy Alcala" <ralcala(a)sura.net>
We have created several dialup accounts on a NetBlazer for use by meeting
attendees. There is one account for terminal-server type access, and
several others for SLIP and PPP. The IP addresses that should be used
for these are listed below.
The surappp account will select an unused IP address from a pool and attempt
to convey this address to the remote machine via IPCP. If you find that the
negotiation fails with your software, you will have to use one of the
surappp1-5 accounts and statically configure the IP address on your end.
If another user is already logged in using one of the surappp1-5 or
suraslip1-5 accounts and you attempt to use the same account, you will
get a message from the NetBlazer:
"packet user 'suraXXXX' already logged in on lineXX".
You will have to select a different account if this happens.
The IP address of the NetBlazer is 192.107.6.1. You should set this as
your default gateway.
The MTU is 1006 for the SLIP accounts, and 1500 for the PPP accounts.
The suranet account provides character access to the NetBlazer command
prompt. Outgoing telnet sessions can be established from this account.

ANS DIALUP INSTRUCTIONS
From: "Daniel B. Dobkin" <dbd(a)ans.net>
tel: (800) 926-7111
PIN: 0198486
user: reg-tech
pass: marmalade
To dial the phone, call the 800 number and wait for the tone before entering
the PIN. Most modems let you do this with a combination of "," and "w"
pause commands:
atdt98009267111,,,0198486
[Note: I found that from the hotel, I needed 8 commas before the
PIN code. --Mark]
generally does the trick from any phone. Occasionally I've run into PBXs
that require another comma or two; home phones usually get away with just a
single "w" instead.
Since we dedicate IP addresses to our users, rather than our modems,
personal accounts are required for SLIP/PPP. Administration of personal
accounts for SLIP/PPP access is overhead I'm willing to accept --- it's not
that much additional work for me. Those who want it can drop me a note,
and I'll turn it up for them.

Just bopping in to say so long to all of you I've come to
know through my 3 1/2 years of work on the NSFNET project.
Starting this Thursday, June 10th, I'll be concentrating my
efforts on MichNet and will most likely not be visible on
the national scene.
No doubt you've all heard this before from parting individuals
but....working on the NSFNET project was an exciting experience
with never a dull moment!! I've had alot of good times working
with you folks and I'll definitely miss you, both collectively
and individually.
Enjoy,
Sheri Repucci

P.S. Since MichNet is part of Merits efforts my email address will
remain the same.
