Can anyone suggest a vendor for a standard CO alarm system? Something that provides an audible alarm as well as a television display would be desirable. Peter, A simpler solution which would require less space, power, money, wire pairs, and administration for your group: 1) Provision a few Channelized DS3s into your LEC network 2) Install Channelized DS3 into your router 3) Let the LEC be responsible for owning/managing the DACS, and provisioning the FT1s/T1s onto the T1s within the channelized DS3s. You'll save the space and power normally required for banks of T1 CSUs and the DACS, and you won't need to manage the crossconnects for the DACS. Nanog-17 attendees, As co-host for NANOG-17, we hope to make your stay in Montreal a memorable one. We are planning a few activites to take place during the pre-NANOG weekend. Hopefully many of you will be flying in a day or two early to get a chance to see our beautiful 357 year old city, with its french culture and unique attractions. Due to the large number of attendees, I would appreciate some quick feedback on interest on the following activities so that we may book enough spaces and transportation for each activity: Visit: Teleglobe International Network Operations Center, Sunday morning and after tutorials on Sunday. This is a futuristic NOC complete with giant sized video screens, etc.... FREE 10am, 11am, 6pm. Fun: Indoor all-weather Go-Karting (9 horsepower go-karts, the most powerful available indoors). Includes overalls, helmet, computerized timing, warm-up, qualifications and final race. Three sessions totalizing 30 minutes of driving time. Podium with trophies and/or medals, etc.... 9pm to midnight on Sunday night. Cost: $35 CDN ($24 USD) per person, free transportation courtesy of Nortel Networks. More fun: Informal pub crawl for Saturday night. Visits to pubs/clubs on Crescent street and Old Montreal. Pay-you-own-beer. Night life: If the weather is good and there is enough interest, visit to Montreal's rooftop nightclub, Altitude 737 (awesome view, and you get to walk on the roof of Montreal's tallest building, which also houses one of the world's most powerful rotating searchlights). Saturday night, modest cover charge (about $10 CDN). Pay-your-own-drinks. Outdoors: if enough people are interested and the weather cooperates, climbing (hiking, really) of Mont St-Hilaire, nice 1000 foot or so mountain about 30 minutes east of Montreal. I have a question... I am currently expanding our network to accommodate a T1 to the Internet and a 512K frame connection to our WAN.. I need to purchase a router and spoke to several vendors. I have heard conflicting stories regarding the model of Cisco router I should get. One vendor <vendor a> tells me that I should get a 2620 with 2 Wan Ports and the other vendor <vendor b> is telling me that I might compromise my security by using one router for WAN and Internet connections. Their suggesting that I get 2 routers one for my Wan and another for the Internet connection... Vendor B is telling me that it would be possible to enter our wan without touching our firewall should someone be able to hack into our IOS on the router... I decided to go the experts... I would appreciate any helpful suggestions. Thanks... -Gerry

Query for NANOG: Want a Peering BOF?

Hi all - Before proposing a Peering BOF I'd like to get a sense of the community interest, so here is what I was thinking... Peering BOF Description ----------------------- The idea would be to have a BOF for those who are interested in establishing peering relationships, to find out who each other is, and have a light agenda focused on one or two short peering-related issues. In this forum we would pass a hat around to get everyones business cards and then e-mail out to those folks an Excel spreadsheet with everyones contact information. The hope is that this would help facilitate peering in the 'net. Agenda ------ I can contribute to the agenda an overview of a draft I just finished (with the help of a bunch of you) called "The Peering Decision Tree" that describes in rough terms the process the ISPs I spoke with go through to determine with who and with which method to peer. So: ------ Please send me private e-mail me if a) You think this is a good idea and you would participate in the BOF, or b) You have an agenda item you'd like to contribute, or c) This is the worst idea Curtis has ever heard. Rochelle Park and North Carolina

Bell Atlantic indicates 95%-99% of the telephone service should be restored from their New Jersey Rochelle Park office by 9am Monday morning. Bell Atlantic and AT&T Wireless, who also has equipment in the same building, have put updates on their web sites and issued media releases about their progress. Apparently in the past BA had used a half-dozen pumps to keep the water out of the building, but residents in the area complained that practice made the flooding worse in their houses, so they weren't used this time. At its peak, 99 Bell Atlantic reported central offices on backup power. Something to watch out for the next few days in North Carolina. Due to road damage from flooding, diesel deliveries are iffy in much of eastern North Carolina. Unless power is restored, some facility generators may run dry.
