As you point out there have been numerous outage lists such as nsr, netstat, outage@dal, puck; as well as provider specific lists such as outage(a)mci.net, outage(a)sprintlink.net, @internic.net, etc. The problem is its easier to set up the address than it is to get anyone to use it. I am (or have been) subscribed to most outage lists I know about on the net. Maybe I've just fallen off most of them, but even when there are major problems affecting the domain of each list, there are rarely any reports posted on lists other than NANOG, and general news sources such as CNN, Reuters, etc. Like CNN filling the day with Showbiz Today, there seems to be a need too have a steady stream of traffic to remind people a list exists when "Breaking News" happens. Outages alone don't create the traffic necessary to sustain the viability of such a list. Even on provider lists its a problem, one of the last posts I saw on the outage(a)cw.net mailing list was a C&W NOC employee asking what the C&W outage list was for. So on "slow outage days" you might see a posting about Area 51. No I don't think a single site outage is that important. But if there is nothing else happening, it may be the top story. On the other hand, on heavy news days it might get drowned out. For example, NextLink had the misfortune to announce it bought Concentric for $2.9Billion on the same day as the AOL-Time Warner announcement.

Domain Registration Woes

I apologize in advance if this is too far off topic We are a small web hosting firm doing 20-40 domains/month. A few days ago email submissions stopped working. The good folks over at NSI that they submit to public abuse do not have a clue as to what the powers that be do from day-to-day. The numbers they give out simply say, "we are too busy to answer the phone". I would say I wish we had that much business, but the truth is I would rather shovel out the barn. End of rant, so my questions are: 1) anyone know what gives; I have used the 4.0 and 6.0 forms 2) does anyone know of/have experience with another registrar that takes email submissions As sort of an open letter part: Chuck: hope you are going better than the service you oversee. More DACS problems

Last week Sprint filed a FCC outage report about a DACS failure during a software upgrade. What is up with the DACS vendors. There seems to continuing problems when telco's upgrade the software on their DACS equipment. Since telcos have created a design with DACS as a single point of failure, these outages have a big impact on non-switched services such as data lines. Has anyone heard what, if anything, the telcos and DACS vendors are doing to solve these software upgrade problems on their DACS equipment?

A case for Scully, Mulder and The Lone Gunmen? I received an update about an outage report I mentioned last month. Sprint requested the FCC withdraw the outage report referring to a DACS failure serving "Area 51" on December 22, 1999.
