Just thought I'd let people know. When in the southwest please note that the temperatures during the day can get as high as 100 in Jun, and into the 50's at nite. Make sure you DRINK PLENTY OF WATER (beer doesn't work) You can dehydrate out here pretty easily. Please DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. The age old way of knowing is how often you have to goto the WC. If you aren't going at least 3 times a day, you are not drinking enough water. If you plan to go hiking, rafting, ballooning, please make sure you wear the appropriate clothes. Good shoes, cotton socks, long pants (jeans), good shirt, maybe even bring some gloves (work type). A hat is a good idea, along with maybe sun block if you plan to be outside. Sunblock is important for light or fair skin'd people, or those that burn easy. Also keep in mind that we are 6000++ feet above sea level. That means the O2 is a little thinner here. Take your time, and rest if you need to. One of the MOST important things to bring with you is your Camera. We have wonderful sun rises and sun sets. Lots of views of mountains, people, culture. If you go for a drive, take water, plenty of water. If you go hiking, take water, plenty of water. If you drink (beer that is, or good scotch) then drink plenty of water, less you have massive headache in the morning. Looking forward to seeing everyone in ABQ. Safe journey. jmbrown

Supernews outage

There seems to be some sort of failure of the root nameservers involving supernews.com. No records are being returned. Is this problem specific to supernews.com or are other domains affected?

They do not keep good documentation (or their people don't choose to use it) on what circuits affect which customers, which ISPs their outages affect, or how to match a CID with a dslam. Most notable in this area is Northpoint's NCC. My hope is that either (a) over time they will get more standardized in their outage notification and communication with the ISPs they partner with (b) the technology becomes outdated soon and customer connectivity does not rely on their technical support. PRI ISDN, callback and MICA technology

Hi folks, is there anyone here who wants to share experience with Cisco's 3640 and callback over a PRI ISDN? We are having troubles and probably going to give up and switch to other solutions, but not before consulting with the people on this list (Cisco TAC already consulted..) We have a 3640 with 3 banks of digital MICA modems and want to terminate both analog and ISDN calls over a PRI ISDN on the Cisco. The Cisco should callback over the PRI to *both* analog and ISDN users. All of the 30 available B channels should be dedicated to this purpose. That's all, is that possible? We are using IOS 12.1.1(T), MICA Portware 2.6.2.0, E1/PRI ISDN ctrl, client modems USRobotics, Multitech, Supra etc. So far callback works, with a TACACS+ based AAA scheme, but we have the following problems: - a high rate a unsuccessfull incoming calls (~50%) with the modems idle and a busy signal or no answer at all (debug on Cisco shows a generic ISDN disconnect error) - during the callback the modems do not handhshake properly, even disabling V.90 and K56Flex (S29=1) so the Cisco drops the carrier after a (long) timeout - we need to reload the Cisco every second day in order to get a reasonable % of successfull incoming calls (and test, and test...) "clear modem all" doesn't do any good. - the ISDN line is clean, "show cont", "show int ser 1/0:15" show no errors at all. We use the "framing no-crc4" command on the controller, otherwise it goes down with "alarm detected", does this matter? - Cisco TAC say our configuration is correct, why then it doesn't work? They are investigating..so am I. Anyone with similar experiences? BTW, we do have the "modem country mica netherlands" and "modem autoconfigure type mica" in the config... Other things involved are accountability and the NOCs ability to work effectively with IP and field engineering groups. Accountability meaning when they handle an issue you requested assistance on you get a name of the person handling your issue and that if you don't feel things are being done correctly you can get things escalated. I talk to NOCs all day and those that have good resources (network monitoring soft., circuit databases, routing layouts) don't compare to those NOCs that have a divining rod and a ouija board for tools but are commited to gettings things fixed. Oh well, I guess it was too good to be true. Various customers of at least three ISPs sent me mail describing various issues due to the storms and power failures on Friday. I asked the ISPs about the incidents, and they used words like transient, anomaly, and unusual event. Bell Atlantic was the only ISP/carrier to use the word outage. The others are still investigating.
