[BCC'd to multiple lists, apologies for duplicates] No doubt everybody reading this will alread be aware of the disastrous events unfold in New York and WDC, and untold human cost. As we try and focus back on running networks, it has become evident that much of downtown NY is currently without power, and many telco hotels are running on backup generators. Some are not being started, or cannot start, due to the ash in the air, and some may stop. At least three colo facilities (WTC obviously, 7 WTC next door, Old slip) are down. 25 Broadway (at least) is running on generator power. It is unknown at this stage how much diesel existing facilities have. At least one C/O is gone, and Verizon is having extensive problems in the downtown area. Most transatlantic circuits land in Manhatten, and most are routed through down town area. Though we didn't see much circuit disruption yesterday (apparently UUnet lost some transatlantic capacity - no doubt they can provide more details), I expect more disruption as generators run dry. This is likely to be a difficult week for transatlantic operators. In the spirit of cooperation in adverse circumstances, XO Europe would like to offer free transit to any European ISP with a presence in the UK, in case of any emergency outage caused by the NY / WDC events (i.e. total lack of transit or severe degredation through). We can bring this up quickly in either Telehouse or Harbour Exchange. Obviously we will need to capacity plan this. Please email or ring me first. Don't just point default. XchangePoint has similarly offered to put in private interconnects at minimal notice if required under similar circuimstances (please contact Brett Wilde there). I would encourage other large ISPs with transatlantic capacity spare to join us in this offer. Please feel free to redistribute this message intact. Guns are as dangerous to the hijacker as to anyone else. They can puncture the pressure hull. Readywhip has been the standard answer to survalance cameras for years. Locks don't do you any good if they aren't used. The real big problem is that we haven't had a hijacking in almost 10 years and no serious terrorism activity since the mid-'70's. The answer then is the same as now, SOGs specifically tasked to take out terrorist bases and training camps. But, that was in the daze of Scair America and BlackOps Rangers.

Verizon Reports Cellular, Landline Calls Double During Peak of Today's Tragedy

In the aftermath, calls to Verizon's networks reached twice the normal daily volumes of 115 million calls in New York City and 35 millions calls in the nation's capital. On a normal business day Verizon handles 1.5 billion calls. The wireless network, while operating well, is experiencing congestion due to heavy calling. During the peak of the day, Verizon experienced 50 percent to 100 percent more traffic than normal, nationwide, on its wireless network. Phone lines were extremely busy much of Tuesday, and many people who tried to call into or out of New York City and Washington, D.C. experienced a "fast busy" signal and had to redial. Calls to Verizon Directory Assistance and "0" operators also were 100 percent to 200 percent above normal today. Call answering times averaged between 5 and 50 seconds. Wherever possible the company is re-routing call traffic. The Verizon network has redundancies ranging from fiber optic rings to backup power. In Manhattan, the company has asked long-distance carriers to work with it in routing traffic. Two facilities at the World Trade Center that handled calls to and from the complex were destroyed in the building collapse. Normally, Verizon has 488 employees, including some sales people, who work in the World Trade Center. They worked on lower floors of the North Tower. The company has accounted for most of these employees. At 140 West Street in Manhattan, the company's operations center was evacuated before the WTC buildings collapsed. Normally, 1,737 employees are assigned to that building. Verizon has as many as 10 wireless cell sites in New York City that are not operating. These are mostly out of service because facilities that connect the sites to the landline network went through the World Trade Center. Three temporary cell sites are on standby to go into southern Manhattan as soon as emergency officials allow. The company is increasing power and redirecting capacity at several northern New Jersey cell sites to serve southern Manhattan. By 10 p.m. a new cell site will be on the air in Liberty State Park in New Jersey, and two additional new cell sites will be on the air by midnight to bolster New York City coverage. Temporary cell sites have been established at the Pittsburgh crash location and a temporary site will soon be operational at the Pentagon. Our Internap DS-3 circuit is down in NY. InterNAP can't call the circuit out to Verizon, because Verizon isn't doing any testing or dispatching currently. It could be a few days till this circuit comes back. Circuits down, Free Verizon payphones

Some European circuits from 60 Hudson have failed, according to the carrier due to power problems. Other carriers in 60 Hudson report no current problems. Verizon, the local New York City telephone company, has re-programmed all Verizon owned payphones in lower Manhatten to provide free local telephone calls.

Alpha paging systems: any faults thus far?

At least here on the East Coast (DC Metro region) there has been significant difficulty with cell phone call completion during the last 14 hours or so; this has been reported by various sources, and I won't go into the reasons or solutions to that problem; see previous posts today for various interpretations. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced issues with their alpha paging systems, which now for a large percentage of users ride along the same systems as the voice traffic (i.e.: the alpha paging is built into the cell phone carrier and handset.) It's also quite possible that even the normal alpha paging systems that are non-cellphone based have experienced higher than normal traffic, leading to difficulties with completions or significant delays - I'm speculating here. I'm sure that the NYC region has seen quite a jump in two-way alpha paging activity today, as an example. Brief experimentation showed that Verizon's email-to-cellphone service for handsets in the MD/DC area is functional (sample size=1) but it perhaps would be reasonable for others to chime in as to how their service is performing, as many of us rely upon this system for notifications. If we can establish if there are any faults in this system it will perhaps save some of us more difficulty in the next day or so. In the best case, it will create a number of test pages going through the system so that you at least can say with some certainty that it works/doesn't work, and if the latter you'll be compelled to stick close to a nice warm screen this fine spring night, staring at little green dots, waiting for them to become little red dots. Even a number of you who have NOC staffs 24x7 still keep something tied to an electronic paging system of some sort. Good for you if you don't; don't clutter the list with smug replies. JT
