For obvious reasons, finding people who work for carriers and can commit to traveling to Denver has been extremely difficult. Controlling Spam to the NOC

Hello, Has anybody on this list figured out an effective way to eliminiate, or at least severely limit, the amount of spam that arrives in your NOC? I am aware of solutions such as Spamassassin, Vipul's Razor, and the various RBL lists, but has anybody used one of these solutions, or anything else, to reduce the amount of spam going into noc@/trouble@/etc mailboxes without severely restricting the rest of the internet's ability to reach the noc via email for legitimate purposes? ARIN IP allocation question

So, after lurking here for about 4 years I actually have a question... We're a fairly small ISP; we currently have a /24, a /25, and a /28 allocated piecemeal from our upstream's two /19s. (Upstream is Viawest). Now that we've rolled out DSL we're needing a bit more space - based on current trends about 200 addresses over the next 6-12 months. Viawest has just told me that their policy is that customers who go over a /23 worth of address space must request further space directly from ARIN. In other words, we're supposed to call ARIN up and get a private /24 for this. We're not multi-homed; we have absolutely no need for a private /24 instead of a chunk of Viawest's existing space. We're not growing rapidly and it's very unlikely we'll more than 4 class C's worth of address space in the next 4 years. Questions: can we actually qualify for a /24 from ARIN? Will all NSPs accept a private /24 announced from Viawest without us having to track down each NSP and negotiate with them? Will the ARIN fee be $2500? Is refusing to provide small blocks out of their own address space a common practise for NSPs? The private /24 issue makes me mildly grouchy due to the whole "global routing table size" issue, but the $2500/year makes me REALLY grouchy, especially as that same /24 would cost our upstream about $40/year. Hi, We ran out of time. Anyway, question for the best network operators in America, and beyond. Is there a way to download _part_ of a BGP table from a router? Can I use something like logic, sql to download just a piece, a specific piece of the BGP table? I can't believe this is impossible... Thanks for any help on this, Jane

LINX problem ?

Not as well connected as I once was and so I can only try from a couple of upstreams, but I have lost all LINX transit traffic... www.linx.net is also failing - which is not a good sign. Anyone know different or better ? Peter

There's lots of old C's that aren't being announced any more. You might be able to find one that someone can lend you to use. Strangley a search for "portable class C" on ebay didn't find anything though... Ralph Doncaster principal, IStop.com

Hi all, Thanks so much for all the great answers. (Could everyone please stop telling me that im = instant messaging). I knew I should've never gotten out of bed this morning. Anyway, 75% of the respondents said the phone is critical. 25% said some form of IM is critical. Just in case anyone was curious. Is it me or is it very quiet in here today? Jane

Chris, By "IM" I assume you're referring to Instant Messaging as an ideal, not any particular protocol or vendor implementation. Which begs the question, is "IM" is a risk because Christopher J. Wolff, VP CIO a self-proclaimed tier 1 provider, says so, or because you have facts to prove it, which you neglected to post? IRC and AIM have been scrutinized pretty heavily and I can't think of any inherent flaws (other than lack of out-of-box for support for encryption... but is the PSTN really any more secure?). Just buggy clients under-educated users opt to install. A non-trival amount of providers here use AIM/IRC to help facilitate inter- and intra-NOC communication, even if they won't readily admit to it. Are you blocking "peer-to-peer file sharnig programs" because of security risks, or because your employeees are wasting your already-scarce capacity to Global Crossing downloading the new Barry Manilow album?
