Massive sprintlink problems?

Anyone else seeing this:: (1sec+ delay to my idle DSL line across sprintlink...) traceroute is definitely taking an asymmetric path, since pings and tcp connections are consistent 1sec plus RTT starting somewhere in seattle or tacoma.....tok? tokyo? Re: Annoying dynamic DNS updates

Some cable user's machine running default-configured MS apps is sending Paul dynamic DNS queries that it shouldn't, because somehow it's decided he's got an interesting destination (I'm guessing f.root-servers.net ?) Paul wants the user to get an error popup about it. Well, default-configured Microsoft applications have an application that lets you send a machine popup dialog boxes; it's been discussed here recently because spammers abuse it and (related discussion) it uses Port 135, so it might or might not be blocked by Comcast.net. So the obvious thing to do is find whichever program it is you use to send those messages, and start sending popups, guessing that it might not be blocked. The user's unlikely to have a clue what to do about them, but if you include a URL, you may get their attention.

For instance, RWHOIS server requirements could change, the whole whois directory could be significantly different, the requirements for additional address space could be tougher/easier/different... If you really want to join in to an informed debate then you should start by looking through the proposals at http://www.arin.net/policy/proposal_archive.html Then you should go to http://www.arin.net/mailing_lists/index.html where you can see the archive for PPML (ARIN Public Policy Mailing List) and subscribe to it if you have something to say. And finally, if you are an ARIN member and you are already flying to Chicago, why not attend the ARIN members meeting on the 2 1/2 days following NANOG. Adjusting TCP windows on production systems?

Is there anyone in a production environment who, as part of their system build process, adjusts the TCP receive window/MSS/etc. on production systems? I'm dealing with a few latency issues and the MSS settings improve them, but I'm hesitant to suggest it unless there's something I can point to. -Dave

ARIN policy proposals of interest

There are two policy proposals coming up at ARIN that may be of particular interest to ISPs here that may not normally pay much attention to ARIN. The first is 2002-3 which allows for end-user assignments of /22 instead of /20. The second is 2003-15 which, if passed, would provide /22 ALLOCATIONS to ISPs in sub-saharan Africa ONLY. I have been recommending that 2003-15 be amended to expand to all of ARIN and not be specific to a portion of Africa only, since I know there are a number of small(er) ISPs in North America that could benefit from such a policy. If you care about ARIN being able to allocate /22s, it might be well worth subscribing to PPML(a)ARIN.NTE or paying particular attention to these two proposals at the ARIN public policy meeting.
