Hi Dan- Here are some of the issues we have encountered, not all will apply, and I'll probably miss a few. - "Make ready work" for poles, involves moving all existing utilities around to meet minimum clearances between each. This includes everything from the neutral wire down, including fire alarm, cable, telephone, and any other private stuff already on the pole. Sometimes requires the pole to be replaced if it's too short and the clearances can't be met. - Attachment fees to both the local telco and or power company. Poles may be jointly owned or individually owned, so this may vary per pole. - Obviously the cost of the fiber and innerduct, including splicing and termination. - Municapal approval (and possibly fees) - State approval if crossing a state highway. - Trenching and or horizontal boring costs - Entrance facilities (conduit & costs) to each bldg. if you don't have extra duct work in place - Environmental issues (which may the worst to deal with) - TIME - Although these intallations can go quickly, 6-12 mos or longer isn't unheard of either. - Ongoing maintenance costs: be prepared to fix, or relocate etc. due to drunk drivers, road construction, etc... I'd guess the probability of complete failure is much lower in that case. Further, Cisco at least, recommends using at least 3 NTP sources to help maintain sanity on the equipment using the NTP. The bug you reference by the way, is on a page dated from 1999. I'm not sure of the relevancy now. Does anyone on the NANOG list actually deploy standalone equipment ??? Everyone, I was wondering if anyone has some general information relating to fiber installs in an urban environment. Issues that we have brainstormed include permitting, contracting, etc. We are tired of the increasing Telco charges and are looking to put fiber in between multiple locations along a 1.7 mile path. My cursory investigations reveal there is no apparent alternative to Cidera in the US right now. I'd be interested in talking to anyone who knows the technology behind uplinking a newsfeed in order to replace Cidera's news service. I'd guess there is a whole lot of infrastructure on the client end collecting dust as of today.

A good example of why we need to stop announcing these allocations by ad-hoc email techniques and force IANA to operate an authoritative whois directory that identifies the current status of all AS number blocks and the entire IPv4 and IPv6 address spaces. Whether this is done with LDAP or DNS hacks or a simple machine parseable CSV file via HTTP is irrelevant. The fact is that we need a definitive and authoritative and machine-parseable source for this information. --Michael Dillon
