Private ASNs in the wild

I just fat fingered a regex that was intented to show how many private ASNs we’re using on our network for various things. The results of the fat fingers showed that there are an astronomical number of private ASNs in the wild. I checked the CIDR report, and those ASNs are shown there in a specific Bogon ASN report, but I’m surprised that as far as I can recall, there haven’t been any efforts made by the good netizens around these parts to bring awareness to this issue. Do we feel that it’s not that big of a deal? Have we not really been paying attention? Some other reason this seems to be a rather muted topic?

Comcast Support

I hate to use NANOG for this, but support has now ended a chat with me twice without fixing anything, they just kicked me off. I'm not getting an IPv6 address on the Comcast provided cable modem/router. I'm not getting a PD. My machines thus have no IPv6. I've hard reset my router 4 times while working with Comcast, and I've been told to do things like switch to a static IPv4 address, which shows a level of clue that is scary. And before that they were convinced it was a wireless problem even though I have a wired connection, and told them that multiple times. I've wasted two hours with Comcast today, and even when I asked for escalation I got nothing. Just hung up on. It's honestly the worst customer support I've ever received. I don't think I ever got them to understand the difference between IPv4 and IPv6.

While working with their devices one of my colleagues discovered some poor behavior of their embedded DNSMASQ, such as returning REFUSED to DNS queries. eg: $ dig +tcp puck.nether.net. ; <<>> DiG 9.8.3-P1 <<>> +tcp puck.nether.net. ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: REFUSED, id: 33649 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;puck.nether.net. IN A ;; Query time: 136 msec ;; SERVER: 192.168.1.1#53(192.168.1.1) ;; WHEN: Thu Jan 22 13:28:59 2015 ;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 33 where a UDP query passes just fine. This is one of a few issues we’ve uncovered, so hoping for someone who can work on building some fixed firmware.
