University of Michigan shuts down school’s internet connections

Only interesting for this list because of NANOG's history with MERIT and UofM. Long since separated. https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/29/politics/university-of-michigan-cyber-incide… The University of Michigan has been without full internet access for two days after staff shut the school’s connections down in response to a “significant [cyber]security concern” on the eve of the new school year. The internet shutdown affected campus IT systems used for research and fundraising, and could delay financial aid reimbursements, the university said Monday. Campus computers are generally cut off from the public internet, but students were finding workarounds via their cell phones. An updated statement Tuesday afternoon said staff had made progress in helping students access resources from off-campus computer networks, but that the recovery was ongoing.

I would agree with that. We've had gear with 40-gig ports for many years (>6)? While they have filed for a launch license for august 31st, it is impossible for me to believe that date! It was also difficult to believe the deluge ("bidet") system would actually work. Hello folks, Based on data I've gathered through quantitative and qualitative surveying, I can detect no application of Provider Backbone Bridging (MAC-in-MAC). Please bear with me while I clarify that I am not enquiring about Provider Bridging (QinQ). I would like to ask specifically about knowledge of deployments of PBB. If anyone would care to share data points, on- or off-list, I would love to know about them. I am open to anything on the subject of PBB's adoption that you are free to share with me. Hey there, could someone from Astound/Wave please contact me? A friend just moved in to a rental property at the end of a long private road in Ferndale, WA, and has spoken to her neighbors and gotten word that her neighbors in every direction got together and paid Wave to extend their network into the space, but Wave still claims that service is not available there. I need someone beyond the usual 800 numbers and web-lookup tool who has a clue about this and can tell us what the actual history is, and if such things allow people who weren’t privvy to the original extension run to use it. -Dan
