I am aware that there have been a number of people in the US already working on
this issue. You might contact Dr. Hualin @ hlqian(a)ns.cnc.ac.cn
for further details. He, and a delegation from CSA were in the US last week,
reviewing various NOC and NIC functions and operations proceedures and should
be able to provide you with comprehensive assistance.

Got this a while ago but haven't had a chance to compose a reply. Needless to
say, I don't have the sort of time that would be required to assist someone
in designing the IP addressing for all of China. If anyone else wants to take
a crack, feel free...

Subject: please help
Dear Mr. Fuller,
I'm Yang Jiahai, Dept. of Computer Science Tsinghua University. Now, you
know, we are planning and designing the CERNET(China Educational and
Research NETwork). So we appreciate all sorts of information about Internet
and its Protocols, such as IP routing, IP addressing, addresses allocation,
etc. We, of course, can get some of the materials through Internet. But,
we think these materials are relatively older, and ,you know, the change
of Internet is so dynamic. So, I have to turn to you.
I read some RFCs co-writen by you, such as RFC1518/1519/1338, et al.
Now the urgent thing is that we need know how many numbers of class A,
class B and class C are assigned, and how many of them is still un-assigned
up to now(Aug 1994 or at least Jan 1994).
the second problem is, with CIDR, what routing protocols(including
inter-domain routing protocol and intra-domain routing protocol) can
work. It's said that BGP-V4 and OSPF will work respectively. But I need
some analyzing materials(not just their protocol standard docs., for
example, RFC1654 OR RFC1583) which describe them meeting the requirements
by CIDR.
the third problem is that, now, the Internet Registry(IR) has adopted
the IP address allocation plan with CIDR, I do need to know how can we
manage our IP address space within CERNET when there are multi-connections
from CERNET to ourside(maybe Internet backbone). I wonder whether it is
the just multi-homed problem. Maybe you can give me some ideas or help
me to search some materials.
Please help us, we and all Chinese will thank you.
Best wishes,
Yang Jiahai,
Aug/21/1994.

Milo,
I am responsible for architecting SNMP over SF and Chicago NAPs. So,
allow me to answer some of your network management questions. Dave, who is
out of town, can take a shot at me or other business issues later.

Among all the RBOCs I know, network management or network operations center
is not the sme as COs. For economic and technical reasons, the operations
of COs are remoted and centralized to one or two network operations center. So,
"colocation" of router takes different meaning depending on which location
you are referring to. If you want access to your router, colocation will
then have to be at the operations center. In this case,
digital cross connect at DS3 or OC3 rate can still be used, but you would
then have to pay for the connection between COs and where the place you put
your routers. In fact, even if the colocation is at CO, the interconnection
of router to IXC is still not free. Moreover, you have to pay for the
access line to the CO, which can be expensive depending on the kind of
facility you use.
>extra organization in the span, esp in cases where an IXC fast packet
>service is being used for inter-LATA transport. For SONET interconnects at
My understanding of where IXC or LEC should provide the fast packet
servic is really determined by the price you want
to pay. The pricing for NAP interconnect is basically "flat rate" such
that it depends on the interface speed and independent of the distance.
So, if IXCs also provide similar pricing structure, I am sure their average
or "flat rate" will be different because of the difference in the network
diameter and the size of customers they are catering to including those
using the service for other purposes. I understand there are more
IXC providing cell relay services than LEC tody. So, the choice is there
for the customers.
>OC-3c, this would also simplify timing issues, since the NAP connection

Saying that using SONET requires no new network management technology or
service is not exactly correct. There are several versions of SONET management
tools that are being worked on by different vendors. Some are CMIP/CMISE based,
and most others are TMN based proprietary systems. So, while the cross
connect service is well-managed, you don't have too much hope to integrate
those into you L3/SNMP network management system. Part of the advantage of
moving over to ATM is that all the telcos agree to super-impose SNMP over
their internal operations system for data customers. SNMP development for NAP
is well underway, waiting for the NAP to be established.
>decoupling of LEC fast-packet services from NAP service, and allow each

But, I believe all NAPs have tarriff in place for their servic
offering and are ready for business.
>This is all consistent with the idea of Keeping It Simple Stupid (KISS), and
>allow tighter focus on the primary goal of transitioning away from the
>central backbone provisioning of connectivity between the regionals to

AS690 CIDR Squeezings Report: 7512 Nets, 95 ASs, 1495 Aggregates
-----------------------------------------------------------------
7512 (80%) of the ever-announced more-specific routes within aggregates have
been withdrawn. 720 of those were withdrawn within the last week.
598 the week before that.
289 the week before that.
95 ASs have registered aggregates in the PRDB.
86 of those are announcing aggregates.
50 have withdrawn at least one more specific route.
1495 Aggregates are configured.
1299 of these were Top-Level Aggregates (not nested in another aggregate).
1035 of these are being announced to AS690.
846 of those have at least one subnet configured (the other 189 may be saving
the Internet future subnet announcements).
703 have stopped announcing at least one configured more specific route.
681 have stopped announcing half of their configured more specific routes.
649 have stopped announcing most (80%) of their more specific routes.
See merit.edu:pub/nsfnet/cidr/cidr_savings for more detail.

REPORT CHANGES: (Updated May 31, 1994)
Anyone considering configuring an aggregate into the PRDB (and you all
should be!) is encouraged to pre-check that aggregate by typing the command:
whois -h prdb.merit.edu 'aggchk <agg>'
(where "<agg>" is the aggregate description). This command will list
all of the other entries in the PRDB that are more specific routes of <agg>,
as well as any aggregates all ready configured that contain <agg>. The
output includes the AUP and announcement lists of each of the nets printed,
with discrepancies flagged. This is the same program that we use for
sanity-checking the NACRs that you submit.
The archived discussion list "db-disc(a)merit.edu" exists for discussion of
PRDB issues. Send a message to "db-disc-request(a)merit.edu" to subscribe.

Please send all requests for configuration changes to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu
using the NSFNET configuration forms. The forms are available on-line
from the nic.merit.edu machine. Use ftp and the anonymous login to get on the
machine. Do a "cd nsfnet/announced.networks" and get the files template.net,
template.net.README, template.gate, and template.as.
*** Note: As of March 1, 1994, NSFNET AUP NACRs must use the template.net
*** (NACR) version 7.1, or the NACR will be returned unprocessed.

Bill,
I am sympathetic to your sentiment on the proposed RFC1490 approach to
build the NAPS particularly because so many people labored so hard to
come up with RFC 1577. However, as one of the person involved in the
NAP proposal, I would like to point out RFC 1483/1577 over AAL5 with
LLC/SNAP has always been our goal since at least one year ago. Given that
we have the same goal, it appears to me what you are objecting
to is the use of a temporary solution to meet the time table imposed on us.
Since changing the time table is not a viable option, I am
curious if you have other suggestions in mind? I am asking this question
just want to make sure that we did not miss anything significant in our
collective decision process.

My conversation with Cisco indicates that 1490/AAL5 software patch for
AIP is available and 1483/AAL5 for ADSU and 1483/AAL5 for T3-AIP should
be available withing about 6 months. So, indeed ther are several migration
path available, not clear which is the best for all NAPs. Perhaps different
NAP location may have different business needs based on what their customers
desire.

I think HSSI is a proven technology. HSSI/ADSU probably has lower
failure rate than AIP based on the typical bath tub curb for new product
reliablity.
> The listed approach requires manual configuration.
I like the flexibility of AIP, but how to configure AIP to avoid congestion
is still a research topic for me.

Hopefully, we can unlock this as soon as we feel comfortable with other
approaches.
BTW, I think the Merit paper is useful and good work as you said. Since
RFC1490 is the only viable option exposed to Merit, saying it is one of those
is a bit too harsh.

I would migrate, rather than translate.
Depending on the Cisco 7000 HSSI and/or AIP microcode, an ATM NAP could
migrate a PVC at a time or the whole NAP at once.
I assume that this migration will occur before NAPs become very large.
[By the way, translation between RFC 1490 (NLPID) and RFC 1577 (LLN/SNAP)
is still an issue for frame relay interworking units, even if it isn't
required for 1490-1577 migration in an ATM-only NAP.]

Curtis,
We have done tests on two switches with various configurations - 10
sparcstaions, 3 7000's, AGS+, Kentrox, as well as other boxes for bridging
protocol stacks. We have not yet artificially insert 70 msec delay. With
your request, we will get on to that ASAP. One question here: since we
are happy with what we found out so far in the lab it would be nice if
we move the tests closer and closer to the real environment. I heard you
have a test network. Can I connect my NAP prototype at Morristown NJ
to your test network to study the effect of cross country delay?

The migration from RFC 1490 to RFC 1577 is probably straight forward.
Cisco has promised RFC 1577 microcode (for PVCs only) for their HSSI
interface. Therefore, one [clear] migration path is to upgrade the HSSI
microcode when it is available and stable, and then migrate from RFC 1490
to RFC 1577.
By the way, it should be noted that the Cisco 7000-series router is the
only router that any NSP has indicated that they will use to connect to
an ATM NAP. Note that the router selection was made by the NSPs, not
the NAP managers.

Compared to what? There is a strong desire to use existing, released
products which can connect to a DS-3 ATM switch as soon as possible.
This rather limits the options.
> The listed approach requires manual configuration.
Again, compared to what? There will be considerable manual configuration
in the initial ATM NAPs, (e.g., PVCs).

I don't understand your point. The migration to OC-3c will be straight
forward, (e.g., pull out board A, insert board B), particularly after the
planned 1490/1577 migration.

As I indicated above, the Cisco 7000 was the choice of the NSPs. There
is also a strong desire among those involved to implement the new NSFNET
architecture as soon as possible, (which implies using existing, released
products).

As you know, everyone involved intends to migrate to RFC 1577. Initial
deployment of RFC 1577, rather than RFC 1490, conflicts with the
objectives of using existing, released products, implementing ATM NAPs
as soon as possible, and supporting DS-3 ATM interfaces.
