PRDB CHANGES: (Updated January 19, 1994)
As of 1/19/95, ACKs and NAKs will no loger be required (or even
read) in the processing of NACRs.
In early 1995, as part of the transition to the new Internet Routing
Registry (IRR), the Policy Routing Database (PRDB) will be retired.
Many of the functions of the PRDB (including generation of router
configurations for NSFNET) will be produced based on data from the
Global Routing Registry.
This change to the NSFNET Backbone service will involve the following changes:
- The method for submitting new nets to be routed over AS690 will
change. Instead of submitting a NACR to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu,
you will need to submit a "route template" to auto-dbm(a)ra.net .
- Additions and entries to the new registry will be made by the Home
AS which creates the route for each net, rather than being
submitted by a AS690 peer AS.
- Most of the PRDB reports (listed above) will no longer be produced.
Equivalent information for most of these reports is available
from the global Routing Registry.
These are major changes to the system. These changes are being made in
order to migrate NSFNET customers and the global user community to a
global Internet Routing Registry system, which will be more capable of
supporting user needs after the termination of the NSFNET Backbone services
in April 1995.
For more information, set your web browser to http://www.ra.net/rrinfo.html ,

Merit would like to minimize the number of problems that this transition
may cause you. In order to help us help you through the transition,
please send your concerns, your needs, and suggestions on how we can
make this happen smoothly to merit-ie(a)merit.edu.

Please send all requests for configuration changes to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu
using the NSFNET configuration forms. The forms are available on-line
from the nic.merit.edu machine. Use ftp and the anonymous login to get on the
machine. Do a "cd nsfnet/announced.networks" and get the files template.net,
template.net.README, template.gate, and template.as.
*** Note: As of March 1, 1994, NSFNET AUP NACRs must use the template.net
*** (NACR) version 7.1, or the NACR will be returned unprocessed.

CERT Vendor-Initiated Bulletin VB-95:02
March 8, 1995
Topic: IRIX 5.2, 6.0, 6.0.1 Desktop Permissions Tool
Source: Silicon Graphics Inc.
To aid in the wide distribution of essential security information, the CERT
Coordination Center is forwarding the following information from Silicon
Graphics Inc. (SGI). SGI urges you to act on this information as soon as
possible. SGI contact information is included in the forwarded text below;
please contact them if you have any questions or need further information.
========================FORWARDED TEXT STARTS HERE============================
_______________________________________________________________________________
Silicon Graphics Inc. Security Advisory
Title: IRIX 5.2, 6.0, 6.0.1 Desktop Permissions Tool
Number: 19950301-01-P373
Date: March 3, 1995
_______________________________________________________________________________
Silicon Graphics provides this information freely to the SGI community
for its consideration, interpretation and implementation. Silicon Graphics
recommends that this information be acted upon as soon as possible.
Silicon Graphics will not be liable for any consequential damages arising
from the use of, or failure to use or use properly, any of the instructions
or information in this Security Advisory.
_______________________________________________________________________________
A vulnerability has been discovered in the IRIX 5.2, 6.0, and 6.0.1 operating
systems regarding the permissions tool under the IRIX desktop environment.
Normally, this tool is used by users to modify the permissions on their files
and files they are privileged for. Under certain conditions, a user may be
able to modify the permissions for any file. This is identified as SGI
SCR # 265071.
SGI Engineering has investigated this issue and recommends the following
steps for neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these
measures be done on ALL SGI systems running IRIX 5.2, 6.0, and 6.0.1 .
This issue is corrected in 5.3 of IRIX and will be corrected in future
releases of IRIX.
- --------------------------
- --- Immediate Solution ---
- --------------------------
The most immediate solution for this issue is to remove the setuid/setgid
bits on /usr/lib/permissions, or to remove the tool entirely. Removing the
setuid/setgid bits will limit the tool to only function on files owned by
the user using the tool.
1) Become the root user on the system.
% /bin/su -
Password:
#
2) Change the unix permissions level on the desktop
permissions program.
# chmod u-s /usr/lib/desktop/permissions
# chmod g-s /usr/lib/desktop/permissions
3) Return to previous user.
# exit
%
- --------------------------
- --- Long Term Solution ---
- --------------------------
*** IRIX 5.0.x, 5.1.x ****
The versions 5.0.x and 5.1.x of IRIX were limited hardware, specific
releases and have since been obsoleted by later versions of IRIX. For
supportability reasons, upgrading to at least IRIX 5.2 is recommended
as a first step for all problem resolution. IRIX 5.0.x, 5.1.x ARE
NOT subject to this vulnerability.
**** IRIX 5.2, 6.0, 6.0.1 ****
>>>> IRIX 5.3 IS NOT SUBJECT TO THIS VULNERABILITY. <<<<
For the IRIX operating system versions 5.2, 6.0 and 6.0.1, an inst-able
patch has been generated and made available via anonymous ftp and/or your
service/support provider. The patch is number 373 and will install on
IRIX 5.2, 6.0 and 6.0.1 .
- -NOTE- Inst-able patches require a patch-aware inst program. The stock
5.2 inst program with the base install is not patch-aware. The 6.0
and 6.0.1 inst programs are. A patch-aware inst program for IRIX 5.2 is
available as patch number 0, 34, or 84. Any one of these may be used, with
84 the latest, most recommended, and available via your service provider
or the usual SGI anonymous ftp sites.
The SGI anonymous ftp site is ftp.sgi.com (192.48.153.1). Additionally,
the alternative SGI anonymous ftp site, sgigate.sgi.com, can be accessed
to find the same files. On each of these servers, patch 373 can be found
in the following directories:
~ftp/Security
or
~ftp/Patches/5.2
~ftp/Patches/6.0
~ftp/Patches/6.0.1

Thanks, Sean, that reminded me to send a note of appreciation to Stan and
it deserves to go to the list.
I dumped my Powerpoint slides into Word RTF and ran it through an
RTF-to-HTML filter and it came out looking dumb (all headlines, no lists)
but what the heck, nobody going to read it online, right?
Well, when Stan published it it looked nice (all lists, no headlines) and
what-do-you-know, he even retrieved a PacBell logo for the intro! Nice.
:-)
I'm really beginning to think that online is the way to publish. Stan
makes it look so professional.
Thanks, Stan! You've got a job for life. :-)

ANS has been adding additional nets to home-as 690:

140.222 used to be the only net in AS 690.
If you are passing around _690$ for any reason (say to get 140.222
through to use as a default route), you should now be aware that you
are passing around more nets than you thought you were.
Also, 140.222 is probably no longer useful as a default route. If you
are using 140.222 as a default route, you probably should reevaluate
your routing decisions to see if this still makes sense.
Presuming that _690$ meant just 140.222 and using 140.222 as a default
route just bit a customer of ours.

Sean,
I agree, the development of testing methodology is a legit
topic, guessing at the "good" and "bad" thresholds is not.

I think that this is a great idea, however, I want to stress
that the appropriate forum for the discussion of _results_
as opposed to the development of the tools to gather them
is NOT the IETF, but rather NANOG or IESG.
Any attempt by a WG at IETF to benchmark issues related
to operations, or to attempt to compare operational aspects
of ISPs, is something that I will not find particularly friendly.
OTOH, I *would* like to see NANOG and IESG be the place
to test whatever the WG comes up with and to discuss and
share results.
Sean.
P.S.: Yes, that's Canadian understatement at work in the
second paragraph.

Expanded listing, sorted by country, then by organization:
==========================================================
The "Expanded Listings" section of this NWG report has been retired
since it is sorted by countries and network organization addresses.
The replacement configuration generation system is based on the
Internet Routing Registry (briefly called the "Global Routing
Registry"). See the file ftp.ra.net:pub/radb/OVERVIEW for more
information.
The remainder of this report will also be retired shortly.
AS690 CIDR Squeezings Report: 9901 Nets, 181 ASs, 2961 Aggregates
------------------------------------------------------------------
9901 (81%) of the ever-announced more-specific routes within aggregates have
been withdrawn. 413 of those were withdrawn within the last week.
165 the week before that.
600 the week before that.
181 ASs have registered aggregates in the PRDB.
164 of those are announcing aggregates.
88 have withdrawn at least one more specific route.
2961 Aggregates are configured.
2165 of these were Top-Level Aggregates (not nested in another aggregate).
1673 of these are being announced to AS690.
1039 of those have at least one subnet configured (the other 634 may be saving
the Internet future subnet announcements).
871 have stopped announcing at least one configured more specific route.
840 have stopped announcing half of their configured more specific routes.
807 have stopped announcing most (80%) of their more specific routes.
See home.merit.edu:pub/nsfnet/cidr/cidr_savings for more detail.

For more information, set your web browser to http://www.ra.net/rrinfo.html ,
or use anonymous ftp to obtain the files "OVERVIEW" and from the directory
"ftp.ra.net:pub/radb".
Merit would like to minimize the number of problems that this transition
may cause you. In order to help us help you through the transition,
please send your concerns, your needs, and suggestions on how we can
make this happen smoothly to merit-ie(a)merit.edu.
The archived discussion list "db-disc(a)merit.edu" also exists for discussion
of PRDB and RADB issues. Send a message to "db-disc-request(a)merit.edu" to

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please send all requests for configuration changes to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu
using the NSFNET configuration forms.

Megan,
This BOF has the OPS ADs OK
Matt & the others,
The topic of this BOF does overlap the mission of the BMWG (Benchmarking
Methodology WG). It is reasonable to hold the BOF to explore the specific
issues but it might be that if the BOF concludes that it should be explored
the right place for the followup may be the BMWG.
