It shouldn't be too hard for someone to port. as for vacuum cleaners, in my past I once worked on a project involving networking household appliances. This is an auto-generated mail on Fri Oct 4 12:00:00 PDT 1996 It is not checked before it leaves my workstation. However, hopefully you will find this report interesting and will take the time to look through this to see if you can improve the amount of aggregation you perform. The report is split into sections: 0) General Status List the route table history for the last week, list any possibly bogus routes seen and give some status on ASes. 1) Gains by aggregating at the origin AS level This lists the "Top 30" players who if they decided to aggregate their announced classful prefixes at the origin AS level could make a significant difference in the reduction of the current size of the Internet routing table. This calculation does not take into account the inclusion of holes when forming an aggregate so it is possible even larger reduction should be possible. 2) Weekly Delta A summary of the last weeks changes in terms of withdrawn and added routes. Please note that this is only a snapshot but does give some indication of ASes participating in CIDR. Clearly, it is generally a good thing to see a large amont of withdrawls. 3) Interesting aggregates Interesting here means not an aggregate made as a set of classful routes. Thanks to xara.net for giving me access to their routing tables once a day. Please send any comments about this report directly to me. Both at the lab/research level and at getting the technology on every box on the Internet (and you've contributed significantly in both of those areas). Good security requires an enormous amount of ongoing effort. It's not like you secure your network and it's done. At least one good things that's happened in the last few years is that many vendors have started paying much more attention to security in their products. This really helps in the distribution effort. I've done alot of consulting in the past, and I've found at many sites that the cost of security was very hard to sell. For startup ISP's network security almost never had a line in the budget. They'd usually tell me they can't afford it. I'd tell them they can't afford to be without it. Of course alot of starup ISP's had never thought about hiring a networking person either! You just go down to the local discount computer store and buy a bunch of 10baseT hubs to plug all your computers into. One big network :-). Talk about startup ISP's (a little off topic here), I had one "WANNA-BE" ISP come to me with a T1 already installed to PBI (no CSU/DSU or router, no hubs, 1 windows 3.11 box) and they wanted me to "bring them up as an ISP". I quoted them a price, but they told me that they only had $3000 to spend. They didn't know what services they wanted to provide either. Then there were two others that came to me that had been sold NAP connections. One guy was sitting their with a single Win95 box plugged into his Cisco 75xx with a DS3 NAP connection, "Well, how do I get this thing configured?". BSDI announcement about defense against syn-flooding attacks

They've made a big announcement about it, but the code doesn't yet appear to be on their ftp site. The announcement does not describe what approach they took to solving the problem (presumably something more then their existing patch for the larg PCB hash table). It scares me to think how much effort has gone into defense against this one denial of service attack when there are endless possibilities for other ones. ______________________________________________________________________________ Colorado Springs, CO (October 2, 1996) -- Berkeley Software Design, Inc. (BSDI) anounced today its enhancements to its BSD/OS and BSDI Internet Server that are designed to protect against the recent wave of "SYN-flooding" denial-of-service attacks. Beginning this week, BSDI will make the source code for these enhancements available at no charge via the Internet to BSDI customers as well as all interested operating system suppliers, system administrators, and software developers.
