Terrell Filename : draft-terrell-math-ipaddr-ipv4-00.txt Pages : 22 Date : 24-Aug-99 This paper was necessitated by an overwhelming desire; an attempt to end the apparent disparity in the dissemination of information absent of the logical and thoroughness in rendering an explanation of the IP Addressing Scheme. To render a more pointed fact, I needed to pass a CISCO Certification Examination. However, this can never be accomplished, if the information that is needed and used in the preparation thereof, lacks continuity and propagates errors pertaining to foundational information. Needless to say, my endeavors were not in vein. That is,as a direct result of this undertaking, I corrected the underlining errors, derived a possible alternative approach to the IPv4 Addressing Scheme, and expanded its Class system ( that is no longer in use ). In other words, I was indeed successful in the elimination of the problems associated with IP Address Flooding inherent in IPv4 and the complexities of IPv6. In short, small business and single family dwellings can now have the option of having their own private IP Addressing Scheme, without the disparity resulting from the steep learning curve presented in IPv6. While the Internet Community at large, will not suffer a shortage of the availability IP Addresses for assigned distribution. Especially since, while the number available IP Addresses do not exceed the amount reported to be provided, if IPv6 is implemented. It does indeed, provide enough IP Addresses to cover their continued issuance for at least another 100 years or so. Which is dependent upon the adoption of an adequate scheme for its allocation and distribution. I've been asked to look into customer service issues/fault resolution Along the lines of: Fault1: question1 question2 Fault2: question1 question2 eg Fault:Subscriber can't authenticate (and then get inetaccess) Q1. which userid/password was used Q2. which access number But, mmm, hasn't this been done many times before? I searched the web, but found some half useful stuff on troubleshooting. Can anyone point me to a relevant URL? TIA Tony

Version 2.2 of GeekTools SuperWhois is now available at www.geektools.com under the software icon. RELEASE NOTES: 1) All 3 apps (web-based, proxy (source), and Windows client) answer for 101 g-tld and cc-tlds. 2) V2.2 takes care of all registrars in the .com .net and .org g-tlds, by first examining crsnic, then querying the relevant whois server. If you find problems, let us know. NOTE: There are a number of cc-tld whois servers that *only* provide a web interface. We're trying to work with their 'managers' to create a command-line whois. As we convince them, we'll add them. In the interim we'll try and create a set of links to them off the geektools whois page. 3) To control spammers, the daily limit per source-ip through the proxy and web versions is set at 50. If you would like this number increased, bribe us at complaints(a)centergate.com, and give us real contact information for you, plus a promise that you won't use the service for spam reasons. The Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) is therefore expanding its Internet Engineering Curriculum (IEC) program to work with hardware vendors and Internet providers to better equip Universities to meet the needs of next generation engineers. Universities interested in adding an Internet Teaching Laboratory (ITL) to their networking courses are encouraged to submit proposals in response to the ITL solicitation located at: http://iec.caida.org/itl_solicitation.html ITL Phase I donations include roughly 100 routers, interface cards and software from Cisco Systems. Additional equipment, including CSU/DSUs and terminal servers, may also be available from additional donors. All contributions will be shipped directly to the recipient Universities, with CAIDA assisting the evaluation process, ITL implementation, and subsequent ITL collaborations. Selection of Universities will be by CAIDA's IEC Advisory Board, consisting of representatives from the commercial and academic communities. Any U.S. College or University faculty member that will be teaching networking courses during the academic year may submit proposals for a Phase I ITL facility. Parties planning to submit a proposal are encouraged to send a 1-2 page letter (email) by September 3, 1999 describing plans for an ITL. This letter of Intent will permit CAIDA personnel to notify interested institutions of the availability of any additional equipment that may assist with the planned Lab. WWW/DNS problems

Hi, Not strictly a North American problem but I was wondering if anyone had seen this behaviour. We currently have two blocks of IP address space, 195.224.206/24 and 193.193.186/23. Everything works fine from 195.224.206 but from 193.193.186 there are often problems accessing web servers - either they don't respond for ages then are suddenly OK, send just the headers in response to a GET request then stop or just plain don't respond to HTTP queries at all. This appears to happen mostly with Netscape servers although I only have a few examples so far so I'm not sure. (www.real.com, www.cisco.com, www.etrade.com, www.bt.com) We also have two lines out of the building, although I've tried routing in various ways and the problem seems to follow the IP address rather than the outbound line. (IP addresses are, for the moment, tied to the line until we get BGP on the line currently serving 195.224.206/24 however I can't see how this could be an inbound line problem.) I believe this to be a DNS problem as I can't see anything else that could be causing a problem - it doesn't seem to matter what web browser is used (IE, Netscape, Lynx or even telnet) or if a web cache (Squid) is used or not. There are three reverse DNS servers in totally different locations (One on our site, one on the UK Joint Academic Network and one in Switzerland) so I don't think part of the net being unreacable from somewhere can be the problem. The only *POSSIBLE* explanation I can come up with is that the IPv6 AAAA entries for 193.in-addr.arpa are confusing some nameservers and causing this problem. I'm really grasping at straws though - does anyone have even the slightest idea what cound be going on? (Even off-list wild-guess suggestions would be appreciated.) Christian -------------------- That's a fairly strong statement to make. Large telcos/ISPs tend to through "newbie" engineers into situations where a experienced or senior engineer belongs. Let's face facts - there are not enough IP engineers/technicians to fill all the needed positions. Companies need to either have more peer review or expect the "clueless" attitude toward customers. No one could expect a entry level engineer to handle complex ISP BGP issues when they barely understand VLSM/CIDR. The industry is much larger than previous years(obvious), thus more entry level engineers. CF
