Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. Half of the Loop and musch of the surrounding area had zero power due to a fire in Commonwealth Edison transformers in Greek Town. The outage lasted over three and a half hours, taking lots of folks down as their UPS power dwindled. Currently, power is restored to the area. Love is the law, love under will. Effect of SS7 disruptions on dialup Internet access

A few questions. I'm completing my paper on the effect of fiber cuts on the Internet, and I'm looking for a few data sources or SWAGs. How much Internet dialup is done via access banks connected to CLEC lines versus to Bell/ILEC lines? What percentage of the CLEC Internet dialup ports depend on a third-party (i.e. Illuminet) SS7 data channel to complete the call between the typical residential/business user on an ILEC line and the ISP on a CLEC line? My theory is because many of the ISP ports have migrated off the ILEC networks onto CLECs they are impacted by a SS7 failure more than the traditional call traffic. SS7 failures are very rare, but the two I know about disrupted dialup ISP access across huge geographic regions.

Unequal WAN bandwidth-balancing question.

I've a client who have a T1 and want to add a 100mb/sec microwave link to my POP (Fast Ethernet-to-microwave bridge). They've one router, a 36xx, with both Fast Ethernet and an internal Cisco DSU. The microwave portion is a breeze, but other aspects are giving me pause. At my POP, I have a Catalyst 5509 doing MPLS with a 7206 as the MLS-RP. The 7206 has a serial interface, and already has an external DSU plugged into it. The 7206/Catalyst combo is part of my OSPF backbone, area 0. What's the best way to set up load-balancing across these unequal links? I've done OSPF with unequal paths using multiple routers, same with EIGRP, but I'm unsure whether OSPF and/or EIGRP will support seeing two distinct interfaces in the same router or router/switch combo as being distinct neighbors. With EIGRP, it's possible to load-balance unequal paths so that no traffic goes through the higher-cost path unless/until the lower-cost path goes down; does this work if both paths happen to be attached to the same router? I have total control of both routers, so I have no problem making the customer's router a stub area in my OSPF IGP, or in letting their router participate in EIGRP. Even using the DSX-1, wouldn't she need 2-wire ringdown cards to supply POTS lines to the fax? Channelized T1's & Remote Access Routers

I've been handling routing for web farms for quite a while and all my clients have leased lines (T1's, T3's, etc) and haven't done much in the way of dialup connects except for a portmaster here and there for backdoor stuff. As a result, I'm a little dumb about basic dial-up access and equipment. What access router would I need to take in a channelized T1 that needs to have 6 of the lines split out for feeds to a fax server and the remaining used for dialup POPs? I've been looking at the Ascend/Lucent SuperPipe 155 and the Cisco 36xx and 53xx, but wonder if those can split out the fax server feeds I need from the T1. Any and all *constructive* feedback on this will be greatly appreciated. Karyn

Richard, Your problem sounds very much like one I have been dealing with. You should try turning off caching on the ATM interface. My guess is that your problem will go away. Cisco recommended that I upgrade to a newer release so that I could again turn on distributed route caching. ATM Question

I'm currently looking into a weird problem at an ATM peering point on the West Coast, when I ping from my peer router to any of my peers I get some but not total packet loss, when I ping from one router back or use the loopback interface as source things are fine. Whereas, with all my other ATM peering point routers, for example at MAE-EAST I can ping my peers cleanly from the same router. This isn't (to my knowledge) affecting traffic just wondering why this strange phenomenon should occur only in the one place. Any body else had any similar problems?
