netscan.org update

Greetings, netscan.org now has a list of the ASNs announcing the most smurf amplifiers, available at: http://netscan.org/most-active-asns.html It's not currently being dynamically generated, but it will be in the next few weeks, when we will probably increase it to show the top 1000 and perhaps add more information (email address, number of amps, average amplification, amps as a percentage of total class Cs being announced). Also, we're in the process of emailing the administrators of these ASNs; about 20 have been notified so far and the other top ~230 will be emailed this week. Each email includes an introduction and current list of amplifiers from that ASN. It's sent to the ASN admin contact and where possible, the NOC, abuse, and/or security contacts, since many backbones have different departments for each. We're also working on a list of amps sorted by ASN. In the meantime, if you administrate or are responsible for an ASN, email sysop(a)netscan.org for a list of its amplifiers. The other lists - one complete list sorted by IP address, one sorted by # of responses, and a short list of the biggest top 2048 amps - are regenerated each night with results from that day's scans. Every day, all known amplifiers are rechecked and periodically all routed class Cs are checked. The main netscan.org site links to these lists as well as information on the attack. Cheers, Troy

64 Megs of Memory...

One of my old upstreams which we still run a little traffic through only has 64 Megs of memory in a 7202, and it seems like it is running out of memory with full tables. Peering Traffic

HI, A quick question. (Q) What percentage of the customer traffic uses the peering links in the case of a TIER - I service provider? TIER-I Servier providers can be Sprint, BBN, UUnet, AT&T and others. I know that it might depend on the service provider(ISP) individually a/c to peering policies. But an approximate percentage like 40,60,80... will be helpful. Remember that certain percentage of traffic just doesn't leave the network -or - remains within the network. IMP: Assume all the peering traffic is 100% customer traffic ONLY. BTW, the definition of "peering" being an exchange of traffic between ISPs without exchange of money. If we assume that the router mentioned in the following cracking incident is a popular model we all use: what other than zapping the FlashROM could this attacker have done? We all know that <big popular vendor>'s firmware source code has hit the pirate BBS's a year or two back : could someone have compiled a rogue image that can actually fry some router components (I can think of plenty of nasty things with serial ports transmitting too fast for their own good - and burn the driver chips) ? http://www.denverpost.com/business/biz1012d.htm

After my first summer in PG&E country, I've been wondering if there was a way for ISPs to share power quality data about the local utility. For the most part, every ISP in a region experiences the same woes and problems of the electric utility. Most ISPs are capable of at least minimal monitoring. If the shared data was limited to only the upstream side of the ISPs power system, it would show the performance of the utility; but ISPs could still keep any internal problems secret. While a power quality meter would be nice, even SNMP capable UPSes can report basic data. One of the reasons I'm interested is I've needed to research what things like the CBEMA curve really means, and discovered how little hard data exists about power and computer centers. Almost all the data comes from three studies in the 1970's by IBM, Bell Labs and the US Navy. Since then we've transitioned from mainframes to minicomputers to pc's; and the power supply industry is undergoing deregulation. Like most industries, there are academics who would love to crunch any data they could get. The question is how much data could we get. What's in it for ISPs? Essentially the same things as when IBM, Bell Labs and the US Navy did their studies two decades ago. What should we design our systems to handle? Are things really as bad as the UPS and surge protection vendors lead us to believe? What is "normal" power throughout the country? How severe can power get?
