You've obviously not spent much time at their web-site. see http://www.new.net/help_isp_info.tp Especially, download their hints file. It looks like a root-zone to me.... BTW, I don't run theirs because it has some colliders with ORSC root zone. But, they are definitely TLDs. Visio == Internet prayer wheel?

I noticed something interesting about the visio discovery tool. When visio pings hosts it pads the icmp packets with: "surpassing power is from God and" essentially sending this message out over and over again. I checked it out apparently it's 2nd corinthians chapter 4 verse 7: "We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that the all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." is Microsoft trying to tell us something?

NANOG 22 Scottsdale Update

Hello Folks, Here's the final update for those of you headed out to Phoenix for NANOG: First, the weather: http://weather.centergate.com/dayall.html Bring bathing suits, suntan lotion, sunglasses, and hats. Our weather had been about 10 degrees above normal, although it has cooled off today. Real summer. Connectivity should be up and running by noon Saturday. Circuit is a DS3 via some interesting physical layer implementations. We'll have wireless running by the afternoon, plus DHCP. If you want to open your ACLs to allow NANOG traffic, all the addresses are in 204.74.120.0/22 block. If you need a static address before the official help desk opens, ask any of the CenterGate workers for direction to the ip address czar. Terminal room should also be operational by 5pm Saturday. Loaner wireless cards will not be available until Sunday noon. Voelker and Stefan Savage Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of California, San Diego In this paper, we seek to answer a simple question: "How prevalent are denial-of-service attacks in the Internet today?". Our motivation is to understand quantitatively the nature of the current threat as well as to enable longer-term analyses of trends and recurring patterns of attacks. We present a new technique, called "backscatter analysis", that provides an estimate of worldwide denial-of-service activity. We use this approach on three week-long datasets to assess the number, duration and focus of attacks, and to characterize their behavior. During this period, we observe more than 12,000 attacks against more than 5,000 distinct targets, ranging from well known e-commerce companies such as Amazon and Hotmail to small foreign ISPs and dial-up connections. We believe that our work is the only publically available data quantifying denial-of-service activity in the Internet.

More demand or less supply?

NERC is predicting California (and therefor Internet data centers in the region) may be subject to almost daily rolling blackout throughout the summer. Although most major Internet data centers have backup generators, the historical reliability data everyone uses is based on "normal" power conditions in the USA, not daily rolling blackouts. Is California really out of power? It appears the "supply" shortage is not due to increased demand, or even the lack of new power plant capacity; but due to the shutdown of existing capacity by generation companies at a higher rate than normal. Normally, when demand drops you would expect prices to fall. Consumption is down between 6.2% and 9.2%. However, in California generating companies have shut down power plants faster than demand fell, creating shortages and prices have been rising. It will be an interesting summer.
