ICANN wants to get into the security business

I guess it shouldn't be too surprising. After doing such a great job with domain names, ICANN wants to get involved with Internet security. http://www.icann.org/announcements/announcement-26sep01.htm Since I don't have any other plans, I may drop by to watch the fireworks.

Contrary to earlier messages suggesting that the C.O. was a complete loss, I now have it on good word that most if not all of the systems located in the West St. C.O. will be gutted and replaced. Is there a cheap way of getting 2-4 gige wavelengths? (2 would do) We have some dark fiber from A to B. It would be handy to run 2-4 seperate gige connections over it without spending squids on Metro DWDM kit. -- Marc

Which had more impact on the net?

Which had more impact on the the net? 1. Destruction in New York City Sept 11 and following days 2. Nimda virus/worm on Sept Sept 18 and following days 3. Multiple fiber cuts on Sept 26 Its not a straight forward question. They each impacted the net in different ways. The fiber cuts had the hardest, most immediate impact. It showed up as a very sharp spike in terms of packet loss and latency. But their impact was short lived. It mostly affects the backbones, and leads to lots of route flapping. The number of routes seems to go up. The Nimda, Code Red I/II, and other worms had a more difuse impact. Their effects show up with a ramping period, peaking after a few hours and then slowly declining over several days. Their impact is extremely long lived. It mostly affects the edges of the network. The destruction in NYC had an immediate impact on news web sites, but not an immediate impact on the net. Instead the failures show up as a several dips and recoveries over several hours and days after the planes impact and collapse of the towers. But outside of news sites, and beyond a 100 or so miles of NYC, the net is relatively unaffected, with a few notable exceptions of overseas networks routing through NYC facilities. Based on previous central office failures, it will take about 6 weeks for the repairs stop showing up on measurement sites.

fwiw, our office in the Seaport district was knocked out on 9-11 (both power and comms). Copper from West Street was severed in the vault, and who knows what all else in the Class 5. Con Ed power was restored via street generator units last week. Hello Eric, I recently purchased a GPS. The manual indicates that SA has no effect on timing. SA only affects positioning. Actually, I just downloaded the latest firmware. They now have something called WAAS (http://www.magellangps.com/press/general/pr010521waas.htm) Quoting from that URL: "WAAS, developed by the United States government, calculates errors in the GPS signal then transmits correction messages to WAAS-capable GPS receivers. Upgraded Magellan receivers provide higher accuracy, not only from WAAS signals, but also when receiving correction signals from the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System (EGNOS), which covers Europe. Additionally, projected specifications for the forthcoming Multifunctional Transport Satellite-based Augmentation System (MSAS) for Asia suggest that upgraded Magellan receivers will work with this system as well. As a result, Magellan customers will gain better than three-meter positioning accuracy throughout much of the world." Regards, Ian
