cRTP on WAN routers

Is anybody aware of a vendor that can supply a layer three device with the capability to pass 2000 or more simultaneous cRTP flows over ATM DS3 without running out of CPU? Each flow is 12Kbit/sec (with RTP header compression). Specifically I am talking about G729a traffic with a 30ms payload. Cisco's 7200 VXR NPE400 seems to be falling far short of our requirements and the larger chassis such as the 6500 doesn't support cRTP over ATM. I haven't tried the 7200 NSE-1 yet for this application because we have had tons of issues with those in an earlier unrelated deployment. Feel free to respond offline if necessary. Heath

The actual root zone is at: ftp://rs.internic.net/domain/ But if you mean the GTLD zones that used to be part of the root, then: http://www.verisign-grs.com/tld/ and if you mean just the list of the root servers, then: "dig . ns" should give you what you're looking for. Large ISPs doing NAT?

Is anybody here doing NAT for their customers? I'm looking at a situation where I may have to provide NAPT for tens of thousands of users and am curious as to what hardware is being used, how well it scales, what kind of loads it takes such as: throughput, max simultaneous sessions experienced, session establishment rates, avg # of sessions per user, ALGs you've found necessary, number of sessions supported per public realm IP in reality. I've done a survey of firewall, switch, and router companies so I have their reported numbers and I've done a bit of testing in my lab and have found that reported numbers do not necessarily translate into what the box will experience in something resembling a production network. This is why I'm asking this group - reality can bite! A second area of concern I have is how to enforce AUPs when your users "appearance" can be *very* transitive making tracking back the offender nearly impossible. Any small piece of help, advice, or pointer would be most appreciated. Thanks most much. John Beckmeyer beck(a)pacbell.net

When I was working for a company that was majorly laying fiber, I had to attend rail safety courses for each rail line that we would be working on. I learned a couple interesting things that I thought I'd share... 1) fiber can not be laid in the rail bed. The bed can not be disturbed. If you think about it, those plows or diggerd disturb the earth, and never compact the earth back to the way it was previously. If this was done in the bed, it would weaken it, and cause the rail line to be undermined (literally) and possible cause a derailment. I forget the exact distance it had to be from teh outer-most rail, but I believe it was in excess of 20 feet. 2) train derailments rarely are the direct cause of fiber cuts. When a train derails, it will only distrub the surface of the ground, but rarely anything over 6 inches to a foot of soil will be distrubed. 3) fiber cuts are usually a result of the cleanup of a derailment. If the train was carrying chemicals, ot the engine's fuel contaminated the ground, the EPA requires that this soil be removed and disposed of in a special facility. Since this can go as far as 6 feet in depth to get all the soil, this is where the fiber is usually cut. If the fiber is not located and marked correctly, or the fiber company is not allowed in to mark it (dangerous spill), the cleanup crew is likely to dig it up with their backhoes. (gas lines suffer fron the same problems as the fiber) 4) Pole mounted fiber is usually disturbed as a direct result of the derailment. Trin hits the pole, pole goes down. Not much can be done about this. After taking these courses, I decided that I was not going to volunteer to go to any sites located on railways. Not because of the fiber cuts, but the other safety issues. Luckially, since I was not on the fiber team, or the sonet (OC192/DWDM) team, it was not required that I go there.
