FYI, might as well be aware Norton Internet Security has evidently installed a new feature that pre-scans the inline html images prior to writing the images to the temp dir and displaying them in the web-browser. This is a good thing, right? Maybe or maybe not, as it is purportedly to protect clients from those nasty virus filled websites and spimmers. Well, it is also generating a huge amount of complaints because the user can see the page until the scan is finished, god forbid they pre-load images. Any hoot, with Norton Security active "verizon's page" loads in 2 mins and, when inactive the same page loads in 3 seconds. Same holds true on MCI's site and on CNET you can really see it drag. Kinda feels like the 1200 Baud Days again. In the end we will all hear that the sites are taking far too long to load, and the answer is to drop the client side firewall. insurance

What's the current state of insurance protection for things like DDoS attacks or other unbudgeted outages, and does anybody actually use it? "Given the choice between buying excess bandwidth/hardware/service versus paying an insurance premium that will likely cover spikes in such costs whenever they are needed, [insert comment here]." You can run the same distance as you do with your 10G system. It;s mostly driven by dispersion, crosstalk and snr if you have many amps. I am looking for an IP management solution and the cheaper the better. I noticed this subject has come up before with no real clear choice of softwares, I am trying to download and evaluate FreeIPDB, but the website seems defunct and I am unable to find a mirror (google shows no other download sites). Anyone have a copy of this software somewhere? BTW, The website is FreeIPDB.org -- Kevin

I thought Zebra/Quagga just implemented the actual routing daemons/processes, not any route optimization other then optimization that can be had by manual intervention; nothing on the lines of Route Science or the Cisco OER. I think this is more of an initial offering; at this speed there have to be problems with dispersion over longer distances, this would need to be solved as well as other issues before longer distances would be permissible; plus I don't know of any regen/amplifier equipment that would handle this that is on the market yet (I may be wrong). There is also the need of OC-768 speeds; I don't think the need quite there yet (Even with the nice demonstration that Cisco gave during the Web cast); OC-48 and OC-192s are still the leaders for this.
