thank you Vint. folks please note Vint's remarks on common carriage. This stuff gets very complicate very fast and i do not have it all at the tip of my tongue by any means. Vint did engage with Fred Goldstein, Andrew Odlyzko, David Isenberg and others in a discussion of this about 3 weeks ago. Peering VLANs and MAC addresses

Hi , We are unable to resolve a problem with our peering exchange connection and would like any assistance. Our peering setup is a follows: - Our peering exchange connection goes into switch A - Switch A has a dark fibre connection to switch B, which is in a different PoP - Our peering router is connected to switch B We use spanning tree across our network to allow the VLANs connectivity across our network. The peering exchange has an MoU that only 1 MAC address should be visible on their switch. However they see 2 MAC addresses on our port. - MAC address of Peering router - MAC address of the port they are connected to on switch A Is there any way to prevent switch A from presenting the interface MAC address? Or is this a symptom of spanning tree that cannot be stopped? Your input will be most welcome. Most exploits (be it IOS or some other target) require multiple things to occur before the "desired effect" is achieved. "buffer overflow" exploits. in general. involve a minimum of two things: 1) "smashing" memory outside of the area you 'should' have been limited to. 2) having 'some other code' accept/use that 'improperly modified' memory believing it to be 'valid' content. Causing =any= step of the exploit process to fail means that the attempt _does_not_succeed_. Re-coding to eliminate all 'possible' buffer overflow situations is a *big* job. The required field-length checking for every multi-byte copy/move operation does have a significant negative impact on performance, as well. Merely _identifying_ the 'tainted' (by being in contact -- directly or in- directly -- with 'user-supplied' data) data-structures is a task measured in man-years. As is isolating _all_ the points where such tainting occurs. Then, and only then, can you begin to -plan- how to remove the taint, whether by sanity-based bounds-checking, 'clipping' to known limits, explicit length checks, or whatever else is appropriate. *AFTER* all that, you can =start= implementing the code that removes taint. It _can_ be much quicker (in terms of "time to delivery to the field") to go after one of the 'other things' that has to happen for an exploit to "work".

We're looking at possibly purchasing a Internap FCP500, everything I hear about these boxes is good. We are simultaneously trying to decide if Cisco's Optimized Edge Routing solution (built into the IOS) should be a consideration as an alternative? We're basically just trying to find a solution to traffic engineering. That will A) work, B) be supported and C) be somewhat easy to manage. I had heard that Cisco planned to release a hardware solution based off of OER but never got around to it due to lack of interest possibly? I'm just looking for your opinions on the two more or less. We have also looked at the Arbor product, but we need something that actually can implement routing policies as well as provide statistics on what is going on in our infrastructure. Thanks, -Drew
