So we should deploy IPv6... I get it. The argument comes up time and time again. I would do it tomorrow - nay, today - if I had an answer to one thing: How the heck do I multihome? I have v6 space from Sprint to play with, but I'm reluctant to use it because I can't multihome with it. The end user doesn't care about 4 vs. 6, or anything we discuss here, all they care is that it *works*. It's all a magic box to them anyway. Businesses care that we can guarantee that it works. I want the same reliability with v6 that I have right now with v4, and single homed v6 isn't going to cut it, nor is some host-based hack, or every host gets a v6 address from each v6 provider, or stupid DNS tricks. Am I crazy to want routers to make the routing decisions? ~Seth

Routing Issue?

Good afternoon, is there anyone on the list from Cox communications? Many of our customers that use Cox in Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson specifically, 68.15.190.16 is one of the sources) are having trouble reaching our network in Tampa, FL (64.156.29.150 is one address here). This has been an intermittent problem for the last couple of days and I have not been able to get a direct contact who can help trace this issue. If there is anyone who can assist or knows of a known network break somewhere I would greatly appreciate it. I wonder what it would take to convince a major online retailer (Amazon?), an auction site (eBay?) or even transaction handlers (google checkout, paypal?) to put up v6 portals that offered across-the-board (or even select) discounts to customers coming in through their v6-only portal? Perhaps I'm simply too naive, but I would imagine that even a small % discount (from within the business' profit margin) would be incentive enough to get customers to at least start asking how they can get access to this cheaper IPv6 portal... (the lengths many people will go to to save a little money, often even spending more than they save in the process, is amazing in and of itself) ...I would think it would also cause additional publicity for the sites from the ensuing (even if only in the tech community) news reporting, and that there may even be future gov't incentives (write-off the discount?) for such practices. The North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG) will hold its 41st meeting October 14-16, 2007, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The meeting will be hosted by One Connect IP. This will be NANOG's fifth joint meeting with ARIN, the American Registry for Internet Numbers. NANOG will meet from Sunday to Tuesday, and ARIN from Wednesday to Friday, October 17-20. NANOG conferences provide a forum for information exchange among network operators, engineers, and researchers. Meetings are held three times each year, and include panels, presentations, tutorial sessions, and BOFs. NANOG solicits presentations highlighting issues relating to technology already deployed or soon to be deployed in the Internet. The NANOG community is invited to attend and participate in this forum, which offers numerous opportunities to share ideas, explore research and development, and interact with leaders in this important field of network operations. Vendors are encouraged to work with operators to present deployment experiences with the vendor's products and interoperability. Until then authors should not submit their individual presentations for the panel. A panel may be up to 90 minutes long. Lightning Talks =============== A lightning talk is a very short presentation or speech by any attendee on any topic relevant to the NANOG audience. These are limited to ten minutes; this will be strictly enforced. If you have a topic that's timely, interesting, or even a crackpot idea you want to share, we encourage you to consider presenting it. Signups for lightning talks will be accepted during the NANOG meeting. Research Forum ============== Researchers are invited to present short (10-minute) summaries of their work for operator feedback. Researchers from academia, government, and industry are encouraged to present. Not sure if this guy is still with us, but wanted to read "Confessions of a Hearing-Impaired Engineer", if anyone has a copy. BTW, "Where Wizards Stay up Late" is an entertaining book about the origins of the ARPAnet. It even has some of the first (hand-drawn, natch) network diagrams... Apparently, nuclear holocaust considerations did not really play much of a part in ARPAnet's genesis, despite folklore to the contrary. Hey, was discussing something from the long distant past recently. Specifically it was my memory of the last legitimate spamhaus, and how (IIRC) their backbone was DDoS'd as an act of pseudo-vigilante justice. I also seem to remember their backbone as spinning it as a content-neutral free-speech kind of thing, but they buckled and the Internet was probably better off. This isn't the kind of thing where one can make an easy google query, but I'll bet you that someone here remembers a name that would lead to a URL that I could forward to the person asking for more info. XO / Level 3 connectivity issues?

Is anyone aware of problems between XO and Level3? I have a VOIP provider telling me that there are problems in Chicago that are affecting VOIP call quality when the IP phone endpoint is on XO and the provider's VOIP switch is on Level3 (symptoms are choppy voice quality with remote caller's voice being garbled or blenderized). --Patrick
