Do I or RR need dns clue?

Hi, Mail to RR users is getting refused due to PTR issues. I contacted RR and explained that yea, one of our 2 DNS servers for the IN-ADDR.ARPA is down, but the other is fine. They said that I should either get the DNS server back up (Which of course is already being worked on, was the minute it went down) or delete it from ARIN IN-ADDR.ARPA records. Isn't the whole point of multiple DNS servers that if one is down the other can still answer queries? Or am I missing something here??? Thanks, Tuc/TBOH

Road Runner / Sprint routing / DNS issues this morning?

I've had a steady trickle of reachability complaints coming from Road Runner users over the course of the day today. I started seeing wackiness about 7:30AM Eastern this morning when a VPN tunnel into a Road Runner customer dropped off. It seems as if the problems have stabilized over the last hour or so, but I'm curious as to what happened. I'm hearing rumors of some type of Road Runner outage and/or DNS problems and/or general routing brokenness that may or may not have involved Sprint. (How's that for specificity?) Any truth to the rumors, or can anyone provide more detail? Thanks, Andrew Cruse

As reported last night, 9:29 PM, EDT, Thursday, August 16, 2007, Merit's backbone began to stabilize around 8:20 PM, EDT on Thursday and has continued without any additional network alerts or major problems reported to us from our Members. We are continuing to work with our backbone equipment vendors to determine what caused the problem and how to prevent it from happening in the future. We believe that we will have enough information to share with you the "How, What, and Why's" of this network problem. The main cause of the problem seemed to be with the management interface cards on the Extreme Aspen 10G switches, which were crashing. We would reset the card and the system would work for a while then the card would crash again. This also became a problem with these cards that had 1G LAN ports on them servicing our members and connecting to routers. Some cards did not come back after resetting which required a hard reset (power cycle). Since we and Extreme Engineers did not know the nature of the problem, we were also investigating a possible Denial of Service attack on our network. What we found is that our 10G ring was changing up/down states rapidly which made us think this was causing the hardware to stop working because they were running out of resources. We then determined that the root of the problem was here in Ann Arbor, where a Cisco switch was connected to our 10G core Extreme Networks switch. We disabled the port and the network began to stabilize. We have informed Extreme Networks and they are working to provide feedback on the problem and resolution. It took additional time for all the routes to propagate since many of our networks were route dampened because of the on-going instability of the network. In the wired campus case, he's certainly right: if you have the file topologically close to other potentially interested users, delivering it from that "nearer" source is a win for pretty much everyone. This is partly the case because the local wired network is unlikely to be resource constrained, especially in comparison to the upstream network links. In some wireless cases, though, it can be a bad thing. Imagine for a moment that Fred and I are using a p2p protocol while stuck in an airport. We're both looking for the same file. The p2p network pushes it first to Fred and then directs me to get it from him. If he and I are doing this while we're both connected to the same resource-constrained base station, we may actually be worse off, as the same base station has to allocate data channels for two high data traffic flows while it passes from him to me. If I/the second user gets the file from outside the pool of devices connected to that base station, in other words, the base station , I, and its other users may well be better off. To put this another way, the end user sees the campus case as a win primarily because the campus is not resource constrained (at least as compared to its upstream links). You can only really expect their cooperation when this is true. In cases where their performance is degraded by this strategy, their interests will run counter to the backbone's interest in removing congestive flows.
