Telephones for Noisy Data Centers

All, I'd be OK if we were in a facility that was only average in terms of noise, but we are not. I need an exceptional phone for the data center. Something that doesn't transmit the horrible background noise to the other end, and something that is loud without being painful for the user of this phone. Cordless would be very fine, headset is excellent. Ordinary desk phone is OK... but the most important thing is that it works for clear communication. A loud ringer would great too... but if the best phone doesn't have one, I'll get an auxiliary ringer. As you know, the IETF is the Internet's premier standards-making body, responsible for the development of protocols used in IP-based networks. IETF participants represent an international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers involved in the technical operation of the Internet and the continuing evolution of Internet architecture. Fellowships will be awarded through a competitive application process. Folks, At our Philadelphia meeting, the operator community displayed strong support for IETF draft-scholl-idr-advisory. This draft describes a BGP extension for passing free-form advisory messages between peers. The IDR WG is split regarding this draft, with enthusiasm waning. I am about to post a message to the IDR mailing list in support of this draft and would for those of you who support the draft to do likewise. less than a /24 & BGP tricks

I have a network with two upstreams that land in datacenters many miles apart. The hardware involved is Cisco 7507s with RSP4s and VIP4-80. I've got a curious problem which I hope others here have faced. A while ago we got a /28 from each provider and attached it to a dedicated fast ethernet interface at each location. Inbound traffic arrives normally and anything arriving on that port is policy routed to the upstream that provided the prefix. This was all well and good when it was a little firewall with a Linux machine behind it being used to check latency and do other diagnostics, but the sales people noticed it and have lined up a couple of opportunities to sell a service that would depend on our being able to receive and send traffic from blocks less than a /24. The policy routing works fine at low volume, but the RSP4 is rated to only do four megabits and I know they're going to exceed that. I can terminate this subnet on another router, wire that device into the 7507 with a crossover, and establish a BGP session. I'm wondering if there is a tidy way to set next hop in some fashion using route-maps such that all the marking would be done on the auxillary machine and the traffic passing through the 7507 would be CEF switched rather than process switched. -- mailto:Neal@layer3arts.com // GoogleTalk: nrauhauser(a)gmail.com IM: nealrauhauser

Reduced ISP uptime after BGP annoucement

My company started partial BGP annoucements several months ago with our primary ISP, Qwest, and ever since BGP went active we have had more Qwest downtimes in 3 months than we had the previous 5 years. All of the downtimes have been within the qwest DIA group and not the deliver compenent group. Does anyone know if it is the policy of Qwest (or ISPs) to have lower uptime metrics for BGP customers or am I just experiancing lots of downtime with an ISP that is known for having lots of problems? question about Mark Koster's ARIN presentation

This message is sent to the whole nanog list, rather than the nanog-attendees list, as I'm not sure who would be watching that list when the conference is over. I stood up to ask a question at the end of Mark Koster's presentation yesterday, but before I got to the end of the table, he was being applauded and leaving the stage. I must be too short. The presentation said that ARIN would be doing a lot of work to improve the IRR. The last I asked, the ARIN IRR did not support the RPSS (Routing Policy System Security - RFC2725). RIPE supports this, I know. Will the ARIN improvements include support for RPSS? The presentation talked about the RPKI pilot, and Mark said that ARIN would be using the RIPE code. I believe RIPE has or had a couple different attempts at this, so I'm not sure what features the code you use will have. Will you have the ability to hand certs to ISPs so that they can do their own cert generation for the allocations they hand to their own customers? I.e., is ARIN going to run a service just for its members, or will it enable its members to participate in the RPKI themselves? --Sandy

as discussed in philly, and with encouragement of ops AD, ... if and only if you are an actual real live operator, i.e. have hands on routers of a non-trivial isp, or a non-trivial server farm, and will be at the stockholm ietf, we are planning an informal operators' dinner to discuss ops issues and agendas for the week's meetings. it would be sunday eve the 26th. maybe rsvp privately so i can get an idea of scale. feel free to include any issues you think important, so we can start an agenda. randy
