Possible, and it has probably happened at some point, but not likely. The closer your logically to your target the more likely such an attack would succeed. I certainly don't recommend announcing RFC1918 space to the public Internet. Doing so is a bad thing. If you do so there is indeed a non-zero chance that someone close enough to you could connect to your network and do damage. Announcing RFC1918 space is less likely to route very far than announcing public space that isn't allocated to you, however. That's what the spammers all over the world are doing. In terms of security, most every SCADA system, as others have pointed out, should not be connected to the public Internet AT ALL. In this case it really doesn't matter what addressing scheme is used. Use Novell IPX or Appletalk if you want. Or MODBUS. If, however, it is using IPv4, RFC1918 space in a different subnet than anything used internally within the organization is a better choice than any public space or subnets of RFC1918 space in use within the organization. This offers a degree of protection against mis-cabling and other accidental or malicious vectors that could allow other networks to communicate with the SCADA network. It would probably be best if the SCADA hardware vendors were to ship their gear with no IP addresses pre-programmed at all, as well as preventing them from being configured until any default passwords are changed. Edgecast network issues seen in combination with lowered MTU

Hello, I had an issue with lowered MTU through a portion of my network, and besides the expected impact, some clients were unable to access resources either directly hosted or indirectly served content by EdgeCast Networks (had to look at traceroutes and view source to determine). I also found nodes that weren't pingable, and didn't appear to have ICMP unreachables available but no directly impacted end-to-end lowered MTU was visible. It seems to be a PathMTU issue or a weird unidirectional MTU issue (?). I have fixed the lowered MTU, and so restored connectivity to affected users -- this is not a current problem but still an incipient one. I consulted with EdgeCast NOC in this matter, but it is hard to demonstrate a <1% problem when it isn't apparent from every other network. Or they may have contracted clue-immunity, it's hard to tell. I've used MTUroute/TCProute and "ping a.b.c.d df-bit size 1500". That did NOT show an issue, 1500 bytes were pingable from the customer end and edge router. Given that I know it was an MTU issue, as that's how I patched and then fixed it, is there another tool that would detect whatever this is? Has anyone else seen this compound problem with EdgeCast Networks? Is "ICMP unreachables" ON to NOT break PMTUD per RFC, still best practice or has that drifted? Regards, Owen

While there were concerns regarding the presented wording, there was significant continued support for a policy enabling Inter-Regional transfers of IPv4 number resources from organizations able to make them available to any organization with valid requirements. In addition to cumbersome wording, the presented text could not be cleanly inserted into the NRPM. The following is new language that directly modifies section 8.3 "Transfers to Specified Recipients" to allow such transfers to or from organizations in other regions. The first paragraph is a modified version of the current 8.3 policy language, envisioning resources being released to ARIN by the authorized resources holder or additionally by another RIR to be transferred to a specified recipient. The second sentence was reorganized to emphasize that it applies to an organization within the ARIN region that will receive such a specified transfer, and to eliminate the single aggregate language per 2011-10 which is also being sent to last call. The new second paragraph adds language enabling transfers to a specified recipient in another RIR's service region. This language specifies that such recipients justify their need to their RIR, following that RIR's policies. ARIN will verify that there is a compatible needs based policy that the other RIR will use to evaluate the need of the recipient and that both RIR's agree to the transfer. Implicit in the intent of the language presented and in conformance with statements made, the size of the block to be transferred is identified as /24 or larger, for obvious practical reasons. In accordance with concern for immediate adoption, the AC chose to forward this version to last call. Concerns expressed by some stakeholders for further controls were noted by the AC, and are being considered for future policy modification, assuaged in part by ARIN staff assurances that if any significant abuse of this policy were to occur, then the policy could easily be suspended. Firewalls - Ease of Use and Maintenance?

Hello all. I am potentially looking at firewall products and wanted suggestions as to the easiest firewalls to install, configure and maintain? I have a few small networks ( 50 nodes at one site, 50 odd at another, and maybe 20 at another. I have worked with Cisco Pix, ASA, Netscreen, and Checkpoint (Nokia), and each have strong and not as strong features for ease of use. Like everyone, I'm resource challenged and need an easy solution to stand up and operate.
