Cogent admits to QoSing down streaming

Cogent admits that while they were publicly complaining about other networks congesting links, they were using QoS to make the problem look worse. One of the problems in "tech" is most people do not realize tone is important, not just substance. There was - still is! - congestion in many places where consumers have one or at most two choice of providers. Even in places where there are two providers, both are frequently congested. Instead of discussing the fact there is no functioning market, no choice for the average end user, and how to fix it, we will now spend a ton of time arguing whether anything is wrong at all because Cogent did this. Wouldn't you rather be discussing whether 4 Mbps is really broadband? (Anyone else have flashbacks to "640K is enough for anyone!"?) Or how many people have more than one choice at 25 Mbps? Or whether a company with a terminating access monopoly can intentionally congest its edge to charge monopoly rents on the content providers their paying customers are trying to access? I know I would. Instead, we'll be talking about how things are not really bad, Cogent just made it look bad on purpose. The subtlety of "it _IS_ bad, Cogent just shifted some of the burden from VoIP to streaming" is not something that plays well in a 30 second sound bite, or at congressional hearings. It's enough to make one consider giving up the idea of having a functioning, useful Internet. -- TTFN, patrick

Chicago Colo and IX

We are looking to expand our network and establish a POP in Chicago; it is expect that we will focus on 350 East Cermak. Can anyone provide recommendations on Colo providers? We will only really need enough space to deploy a modest router and the power it requires. As we won't be able to do work on site, given its remote location to us, a colo provider who provides a remote hands service is a requirement. I'm also curious if anyone can comment on the Equinix IX that is there. Our only experience today with an IX is with TorIX, which has been extremely positive, and I'm not sure what significant differences I should expect if any. I'm aware about the Cisco MATE software, but I'd prefer an open-source, vendor-agnostic one, something that in-house imporvements can also be achieved. I already posted about this rogue AS days ago, but nothing has really changed much, since then, with respect to its hijacking of IP space. Well, at least Brian Krebs was kind anough to write about it: http://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/11/still-spamming-after-all-these-years/ (Please note that that is a convicted felon spamming from the hijacked IP space. He's not allowed to own firearms, but he _can_ apparently own a keyboard.) As of today, AS201640 is still hijacking a total of eleven routes to IP space scattered all over the world... none of which appears to belong to anybody in or near Bulgaria. In fact, it would appear that the organization that is the registrant of AS201640 currently has exactly -zero- IP addresses to call its own. Nobody in a postion to _do_ anything about this gives a darn? Given the DNC's focus on the U.S., network reliability to the /8's operated out of the APNIC and RIPE regions was much less important to us. So, we filtered BGP announcements from within those /8's and relied on covering routes to get our packets there instead. I used covering /8's instead of a default, but a default would have been as effective.
