What is nifty.com? Is it legitimate? The web page is in Chinese. I noticed they were trying to do a lot of connects to our mail servers but were in the block list and seem to have been for years. So I opened it up because fool that I am I like to believe people mend their ways. It instantly began flooding us with spam, lottery-office@whatever, dictionary attacks, that kind of thing. So I blocked them again. I've never had a customer complaint about this block. It's making me lose faith in humanity, a little. Totally gratuitous internet governance snark: And they're meeting in Dubai because some countries believe they can be the new sheriff in town? HAH! Charter Issues in SE Washington State.

Hi, Just wondering if there was anyone around that might know what is up with Charter Internet in South Eastern Washington State (Walla Walla / Tri-Cities). Could even be a larger area that is effected. As usual the normal support doesn't really know anything. On the plus side the lady I got a few hours ago was pleasant on the phone. I thought I would post here vs Outages as this issue is probably only effecting a small population. One which I live in and use them at home. (My datacenter and upstreams are not having issues that I know of) Sincerely, Mark

I'm no TCP/IP expert, but IME connections go into TIME_WAIT for a period pertaining to the above tuneables (X number of probes at Y interval until the remote end is declared likely dead and gone), and then go into FIN_WAIT and then IIRC FIN_WAIT2 or some other state like that before they are finally killed off. Those tunables certainly seem to have actually worked in the real world for me, whether they are right "in theory" or not is possibly another matter. Broadly speaking I agree with the other posters who've suggested adding other IP addresses and opening up the local port range available. I'm assuming the talk of 30k connections is because the OP's proxy has a 'one in one out' situation going on with connections, and that's why your ~65k pool for connections is halved. K.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS The NANOG Best Current Operational Practices Working Group is seeking volunteers to take part in the creation of official best practices documents. We are also looking for a co-Chairman to assist NANOG WG, Chair Aaron Hughes. The goal of the BCOP-WG is to produce professional Best Practices documents that can be used globally by the network engineering community. The NANOG BCOP-WG works together with other operator forums, ARIN, and ISOC. The NANOG organization will support the BCOP-WG through professional resources, web sites, meeting space, and financial support. A mailing list is being set up and an organizational meeting will occur at NANOG 57 in Orlando in February 2013. Some areas for BCOP development include: - Address Assignment - Routing Protocol implementation - Routing Policy - Network Security Policy - Network Deployment - DNS Operations - and more! Please volunteer if you are able to devote some time to the effort and have a willingness to write and edit BCOP documents. The plan is to publish numerous official BCOP documents each year with significant professional exposure for authors and editors. This is a great way to get involved in the NANOG organization, to develop yourself professionally, and to serve the larger Internet community. If interested, please reply to betty(a)nanog.org.
