Look into Static route retain. Should keep the route in the forwarding table. >From Jniper site <<< Route Retention By default, static routes are not retained in the forwarding table when the routing process shuts down. When the routing process starts up again, any routes configured as static routes must be added to the forwarding table again. To avoid this latency, routes can be flagged as retain, so that they are kept in the forwarding table even after the routing process shuts down. I'm going to send him a few bucks because I know how it feels to get blindsided by the police on one random day and your world is turned upside down. PHP library for IOS devices

Quick note as many on-list may find this useful. I've maintained a PHP class to connect to IOS devices over telnet and parse the output into something useful for various internal tools for a few years now. I've recently worked with the author of phpseclib to create an SSH version of the library. It's still in a pre-release state until I have time to clean it up, but I've uploaded an archive of the SSH version and the modified phpseclib for anyone who needs in the meantime. carping about CARP

I can't seem to recall anyone griping about this here on our august little list but google finds that I'm by no means the first to have been burned by an unholy interaction between VRRP and CARP. Let's skip the protocol discussions (same protocol number and uses multicast) [*] and go straight to the behavioral observations. I turned on VRRP this evening on a pair of routers. All of a sudden a CARP instance between a pair of pfSense boxes in the rack (which I didn't even know was there) invited itself to the party and started flailing all over the place and causing oscillating packet loss for anything that was going off-segment. Note that the Ciscos didn't exhibit any untoward behavior, and there were "passwords" on the VRRP sessions too. Meanwhile, the pfSense box spazzed out and filled its dmesg logs with stuff like: arp: 192.0.2.1 moved from 00:00:0c:xx:xx:01 to 00:00:5e:xx:xx:01 on em1 arp: 192.0.2.1 moved from 00:00:5e:xx:xx:01 to 00:00:0c:xx:xx:01 on em1 (no other hosts on the segment were logging such activity) Looks like CARP is a bit loose about believing stuff coming in over the wire. Seems a bit out of character for OpenBSD, but maybe these days it's considered all good so long as such a malfunction only causes an outage, not a core dump. Anyway, word to the wise, CARP and VRRP is a bit of a dangerous mixture. -r [*] The OpenBSD side of the story can be read at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Address_Redundancy_Protocol#No_official… Seems that there is a lesson to be learned here: "o hai, we wrote this software but can not be bothered to follow your process or formally write up the protocol, plz to be giving us a protocol number" ain't gonna fly.

Recovering from spam resulting from compromised account

Hello, oh knowledgeable NANOG. I am the technical lead for network for Pixar. (Note: I am not the mail admin, he's on vacation.) Yesterday we had an account compromise that resulted in ~2.5M messages being sent through our two MTAs. I have acknowledged/closed the two SpamCop incidents, and mail is starting to flow, slowly, however we are still receiving bounces (some hard!) and I am looking for assistance in getting Pixar's IPs cleared from the blacklists. I was pointed to: http://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=blacklist%3a12.25.180.66 http://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=blacklist%3a12.25.180.94 Which shows we're still listed on Backscatterer and SPAM Cannibal. Also had reports that we're still seeing bounces to Gmail, Comcast and Yahoo accounts. What can we do to speed things along? We have a ticket open with Gmail folks since we have a studio who uses Gmail for Corporate mail. Any Comcast or Gmail SMTP contacts on NANOG that can help? Would love to get all out stuck mail out of these folks' MTAs. Or do we need to just remove ourselves from the last two blacklists at mxtoolbox? Thanks, David Sotnick -- Pixar Emeryville, CA
