Any2 Exchange experiences to share?

All, I am interested to hear any experiences with the Any2 Exchange at One Wilshire Blvd, especially regarding performance and reliability to the other exchange participants in comparison to routing to the same networks via Tier 1 transit providers. We are in San Diego and have easy access to the exchange via transport offered by our data center facility who does have physical presence at OWB, but *we* are not physically in OWB, ~4.5ms away and some $ for transport to OWB. All things considered, the cost will be about the same to route via Tier 1 transit providers from San Diego as it will be to transport to OWB to the exchange. When there are issues, they are EASY to get a hold of and the people who answer the phone clueful and dedicated to dealing with IP issues, not "can I help you with your long distance bill".... Also, they are pretty good about keeping us informed about maintenance issues. I would not use them as a sole provider (why run your own AS if you only have one transit provider?) but certainly I am happy keeping them in the mix to date. We havent seen the same level of issues as some people in YYZ have seen, but I think that seems to be more on their 100Mb connections for some reason. On the gig service we are on, they are fairly reliable. Not quite as good as TATA/Teleglobe has been for us however. ---Mike

Data Centers in LA - CRG West

We are in the process of evaluating Equinix and CRG West in LA. Before we ink a deal, can anyone give some feedback on CRG West? I have had some minor direct operational experience with them in the past with a former employer. If anyone has some history with them; good, bad or informational on things to watch for throughout a lifecycle of a couple years with them would be appreciated. They seem pretty sound, but some things have cropped up as we have started looking at a possible contract. So if you have an opinion on the following please let me know on/off list as appropriate: Difficulties during contract phase other than terms. i.e. rights assignments, reps and warrants, etc.. Implementation issues during setup and install. Operational issues with HVAC/power/xcons/remote hands.. Any2 pitfalls. Integrity if issues arise. Comments would be welcome.. thanks! Regards, -Flint

Traceroute management

My company uses it's internet connection primarily for VPN tunneling. I have always wanted a tool that I can enter the peer ip addresses and it will every 8 or 12 hours run a traceroute and log it so I can build historical maps of the path our traffic is taking. Has anyone ever seen any apps like this, preferably something that is free. Thanks

Coax wiring. MoCA between neighbors.

Hi All, I'm trying to find out how coax cables are wired in a residential area to each house. I found out that "drop amp" amplifies the signal just out side the building, and a few neighbors share the drop amp (basically a powered splitter). What other devices are there? I'm also trying to find out whether my neighbors would be able to overhear the MoCA signal from my apartment. Anyone knows the answer? For example, my apartment building has a cabinet that concentrates all coax cables from all units, and the 2~4 coax cables are attached to a device in the cabinet. I'm assuming it is a drop amp and I think MoCa signals can travel across the drop amp. Is my guess correct? Any comments on coax cable wiring between houses or apartments and MoCA technology would be very useful. Thank you, Dongsu

Eye protection in DWDM systems -- what threshold?

At what power level do DWDM systems become dangerous to work near (i.e. not staring into any optics, using light meters, etc)? I never see technicians on inside DWDM systems using eye protection, but I see power levels of amps going higher and higher. On a recent meter I saw almost .6mW... Any pointers to a document saying 1550nm becomes dangerous at xxxx dbM? Thanks in advance, DJ

Multi site BGP Routing design

We have two geographically distinct locations that currently both fall under the same ASN. At site 1 we have a particular set of ip networks (/20 and bigger) in use only locally to this site At site 2 we have a separate set of ip networks (/20 and bigger) in use only locally to this site Each site has at least one upstream internet connection advertising with BGP. There is also a (reliable) private link between to the two sites where our routers at each site are all talking iBGP (as well as ospf). There is a router subnet (/27) that spans the two sites. We currently advertise all subnets out all upstream connections as if both sites were only one and traffic routes between sites without issue via the private link. If the private link between the two sites fails, will BGP allow for us to access the IP subnets at site 2 from site 1 via the internet given that both sites are advertising under the same ASN? Is this a case where having multiple ASNs makes sense to treat each site as remote peers to each other? Thanks, Justin

End User Internet Monitoring for Supervisor recommendations

I have a friend in a shop that is not running any robust Websense like applications. They are looking for a freeware solution or possibly inexpensive solution just for a few requests not for the entire company. I used one a while back but I since have lost the information and that PC that I dropped the application on has since been rebuilt. Does anyone have any recommendations that meet the following requirements: 1) A Supervisor can navigate to a url to see end user's internet activity. 2) Freeware or close to it -- Thank You, Joe

iBGP advertisement interval

Hello. Nanog I thought BGP advertisement interval is the following. ibgp : 5 second, ebgp : 30 second. But, now I realize that the default ibgp interval of Cisco is 0 second. (ios 12.0 & IOX) (it displays "Default minimum time between advertisement runs is 0 seconds") When did it change? ^^; I wonder if No interval time for bgp advertisement would bring insecure network by flapping network. Do you think I have to change the default value of interval time to longer? And I 'm curious about what the default value of Juniper router is. Because I have to implement with the Juniper and Cisco mixed.
